If he can stay healthy in the rotation, Whitlock might be the biggest surprise on this team. He’s throwing 4 plus pitches tonight, looking really good.

I'm not sure why I was thinking ST'ing games were over.

A lot going on in my life, right now. Some not so good.

supposedly the last two are technically "exhibition games" instead of spring training. LOL..

Whit went 6 and his only BB was a bad call.

3 H

1 ER

1 BB- 6 K

His change-up was awesome, tonight.

yep. good game from him tonite. and the one earned run was really as much on Devers as Whit.

I hope Whitlock can keep it going.

He's always had the stuff.

Whitlock stepping up and becoming a legit starter (and staying healthy) would fool a lot of us and be a big plus for the team, needless to say.

To me, it's never been about his stuff. It's always been about his healthy and durability. Once he had that hip surgery, I figured he should stay in the pen and maximize his changes at making meaningful contributions.

He looked really good, yesterday, and pretty much all spring.

His splitter/slider pitch is weird. It really falls off he table. He's got all the tools to be a great starter, but just can't stay healthy.

Trevor Story also continues to look locked in.

Rafaela looked lost at the plate. The announcers made a point to talk about how patient the Sox had been all night and Rafaela swung at the first pitch and grounded into a DP. He also had some really tough swings on balls OOZ. I wonder if MLB pitchers will be much harder on him than the MiLB ST guys he was facing.

Stroy could be the STORY of the season!

Have to temper expectations, but there are some definite glimmers of hope for this team.

The most optimistic part of those "glimmers" is the fact that there are many of them, and we might just need 16-20 to come through with full and healthy seasons

7 vets: Devers, Story, Yoshida, Jansen, Martin, Pivetta, O'Neill

7 entering prime: Whitlock, Crawford, Houck, Duran, Wong, McGuire, Bernardino

8 pre-prime: Casas, Bello, Grissom, Winckowski, Campbell, Slaten, Abreu, Rafaela

That's 22 with role players like Criswell, Refsnyder, Reyes, Weissert, Joely, Kelly and others.

If the offense is really the key to the season, then Fatse and the batting coaches have to emphasize a better approach to breaking balls. Voices in the booth talk about the revamped Sox pitching focus on offspeed stuff, and how it's reflecting a trend in the game.

Every position player that makes the majors had to be able to hit a fastball, with elite hand-eye coordination. But guys that can't recognize or get fooled by sliders, curves, sweepers and change-ups -- and flail, get constantly banged on check-the-check, or even just try to pull and roll over... have trouble staying in the bigs.

It's not only newbies like Ceddanne or Abreu, but Story, Wong, O'Neill, Masa, just about anyone but Raffy, who has superior bat-to-ball skills (and can line bouncers off the dirt if he wants). Casas and Duran improved last year -- and we can only hope that a guy like Grissom, who doesn't K a lot, gets here ASAP.

In order of importance for competing:

1. starter health

2. offense

3. bullpen

4. defense

1. sign three more Criswells

2. TAKE Sign on the FIRST pitch

3. leave Bernardino -- who was good last year and even better this Spring -- in the freaking majors

4. Hit. The. Cutoff!

Once they signed Anderson to a Major League deal, they needed someone with options to demote, likely only temporarily.

Candidates were Bernardino, Weissert, and Winckowski. And maybe Kennedy, not sure about his option status.

I would have gone Weissert...

I'm not sure why Weissert got the nod, here.

Yeah, I thought it was wild that Winckowski was being floated as an option for AAA.

Absolutely. They should be fun. To me, the question is whether there is enough defensive improvement to help the pitching at least a bit. We had the worst of all worlds last season.

He's looked good in ST?

He did, and so did Bernardino...

ST 2024:

Weissert: 8.1 IP, 5 H, 3 BB, 10 K: 1.08 ERA

Bernardino: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K: 0.00 ERA

2023 MLB:

Weissert: 20 IP, 21H, 8BB, 22K: 4.05 ERA

Bernardino: 50.2 IP, 48 H, 18 BB, 58K: 3.20 ERA

Career:

Weissert: 31.1 IP, 27H, 13B, 33K: 4.60 ERA

Bernardino: 53 IP, 51H, 20BB, 58K: 3.23 ERA

I thought that was only when he was considered an option for the rotation. Possible it was only speculation by non-affiliated websites like soxprospects.com.
