I’m surprised….

Not really. He fell off a cliff last year. Sometimes these structural issues manifest in poor production before they manifest with pain.

That's what I've been saying too. Blaming it all on his divorce always seemed a little strange to me. Seemed like there were other possibilities in play...

When a guy finishes a season like Giolito did last year, it's a gigantic red flag.

Sale was surgery waiting to happen when they resigned him, and Story was surgery waiting to happen before they signed him.

What's left to sell?

Pivetta

Jansen

Martin

O'Neill (deadline)

McGuire (if Teel is ready)

Anyone else not part of the 2025 or 2026 plans.

We can get something for thse guys.

It should have tipped off the medical staff to do an in depth study of his arm and shoulder.

It should also have tipped off Breslow that he was an extremely risky signing.

The guy had one of the worst stretches ever seen.

My spring optimism has gone in the gutter.

Your phony optimism was hanging on Gio?

Agreed.

He'd also had a very nice stretch beforehand.

This really sucks. We needed Gio to be the first half Gio or the one from a couple years ago. We needed more to go right, as well, but Gio was a major "IF."

Like I said earlier that Gio was never going to make, or break the Red Sox season in the first place.

Hindsight is 20/20. I don't remember injury question marks coming up when he was signed. Easy to do a little dance about it now though.

80 wins now turns to 75 wins or whatever? It wasn't looking pretty before.

No, but when you are clinging to slight hopes, to begin with, something like this dashes those.

I did not have any spring optimism. This organization does not rate optimism. So I am not sure where I go from here.

Whitlock bleeding profusely from his pitching hand right now v the Rays.

Gee, this push the pitching staff early campaign is working so well.

Spot on. People are always experts after an event.

I'm pretty sure this kills any chance of Monty now.

From OTM today:

Hell, John Henry might be sitting in the owners box at JetBlue Park right now, smugly cackling about his instinct to never give big money to a pitcher over 30 being proven right once again. It’s been reported, going way back to the failed Jon Lester negotiations, that Henry is more scared of aging pitchers than he is of Winter Weekend. But we’re now in year five of John Henry’s grand experiment to limit the risk of pitching injuries by, essentially, not signing any quality pitchers at all, and the results speak for themselves. Because the fact is that you cannot avoid this. It will happen no matter what team-building strategy you employ, and the smart thing for the third-richest team in the sport to do would be to use its resources to be even more aggressive in adding elite pitching, knowing that it can absorb the inevitable injuries better than 27 other teams. But the Sox have chosen a different path. And by being so afraid of pitching injuries, the Red Sox have made themselves more vulnerable to them than any other team in the American League East.

I guess. Hoping for a team that is near playoff turns to hoping for a team that is watchable.

He really just blew up his final two starts.

3 IP, 8 ER

6 IP, 5 ER

The three prior starts were fine enough.

We live in a Blame Culture. Something went wrong - therefore someone needs to be accountable.

The reality is pitchers get injured by pitching. Has Giolito thrown any pitches? Than that might be the culprit.

Teams know this, and that’s why as starting pitcher salary increased, their role has decreased…

No chance for Monty. Greater chance for a lesser buy low arm like Lorenzen or whoever to just get you through the year.

The Sox may have more money to spend, depending on how much of Giolito’s salary is now covered by insurance.

For what Giolito was paid, the Sox could probably pay Lauer, German and Stanek. Definitely two of them…

He also ostensibly throws a ball in the offseason while working out. He knows there is an incentive to coming back stronger and making up for his poor performance last year. He could have injured himself at any point working out this offseason from overthrowing. It's not like pitchers only get hurt in games and then get put in a cryogenic freezer.

Can Henry afford insurance these days?

Henry didn’t go the bathroom without insurance. Of course that might be another matter..

So… probably not there for the medical staff to catch in his contract physical…

At his point, just total punt.

Fire sale ASAP.

Right.

They’ve supposedly been marketing Jansen and Martin all off-season, but both are still with the team. So suddenly other teams are going to be interested after Giolito went down?

There won’t/can’t be a fire sale until teams are buyers or sellers…

I gave up a lot of home runs when I got divorced, too. But I never threw a pitch, and didn't have my choice of groupies in every city.
