Cora said Lucas Giolito felt elbow discomfort after his last outing. They’re concerned. He’s getting check ups to see next steps. He’s likely not to be ready for Opening Day.

Might have had something to do with last year's late collapse.

Partial UCL tear.

He’s doing a great job at replacing Sale…

If so, the Sox should have caught it before signing him…

Are you suggesting he was damaged goods? And his agent wasn't honest with our three dozen evaluators who analyzed the quantitative from medical reports and the qualitative from scouts?

It's incredible that doctors equipped with state of the art technology can't detect these things.

Maybe that's where more money should be going...

Brutal news: Initial imaging showed Boston Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito likely has a partially torn UCL and flexor strain and could miss the 2024 season, league sources tell ESPN. Giolito, who signed a two-year deal with Boston, may need surgery to repair the right-elbow damage.

Good job everyone. Another banger of an offseason.

May need surgery and will miss the entire season.

Just when we thought the new shapes of his pitch shaping was really shaping up...

Does this means he won't be opting out next year?

No chance is he opting out.

Running a nice rehab squad of Giolito, Fulmer and Hendriks.

Should have added Woodruff, too…

Players rave about the Sox medical staff. It's the main reason Hendriks wanted to come here.

Where the hell was that imaging before we signed him...

It could have been fine before they signed him? Who knows?

Exactly.

The staff overlooks major elbow injuries and then recommends the team pay you as if they don’t exist…

Yeah, I think this is much more about the machines than the men.

Just sign German or Lauer on a cheap deal to get someone in camp. Jeez.

Sign both. And Montgomery and Stanek…

What a disaster!

Depending on how long Giolito is out, the Sox have a team option for '26 if Gio pitches less than 140 Innings, which could be likely at this point.

Another plan has come together. I said I was shocked when they signed Gio in the first place, because of the $18M even if he had an opt out, or not. Gio was not going to make, or break the season anyway, but now the Red Sox are paying Gio $18M possibly not to pitch, $17M to Sale to pitch for someone else, and had to pay JT some opt out money. I bet JH is not happy about that. Outside of adding another starter it looks like next man up, which will probably be Whit as I think the rotation had been set before ST started even though Cora had said only 4 spots had been set' but I think Houck was going to get that last spot.

I am now the voice of optimism. Read me out:

I never wanted Giolito -- who gave up the most home runs in the league last year and whose ERA rounds to 5 the past two years. I'm not into giving guys a uniform just so we can field a major league team to play out the schedule. But even posters who care about contracts had to worry about spending four times the average Bloom bounceback project...

So here's the glass half-full: instead of pretending at contending, and then acting surprised when veterans don't regain glory, let's embrace a true rebuild. Root for and watch the development of all the up-and-comers. The Sox still have five or six promising candidates for the starting rotation...

...not sure what they're promising, but there are also a few new starting prospects in the minors who wouldn't mind getting a shot this summer, too.

But for those of us who wanted Montgomery... imagine how much Henry wants to spend on him now, after watching approx. $40 Million just go down the drain.

We have been rooting for young, up and coming players for years. The problem is, once they arrive, Henry trades them, along with a veteran or two whose salary he then includes. If I want to watch prospects, I can go to Portland.

At least Hendricks will have a golf partner this season. That is the bright side. Breslow is completely out of his depth. They would have been better off hiring someone from TalkSox.

I’m surprised….

Not really. He fell off a cliff last year. Sometimes these structural issues manifest in poor production before they manifest with pain. He’ll have surgery most likely and be out into mid 25.
