they already have enough scrubs to fill in for him

Mondesi isn’t a scrub. But as Bloom should have known, when the problem is injured middle infielders, the oft-injured Mondesi is not the solution…

In-house candidates already on the 40 man roster are Pablo Reyes, David Hamilton and Ceddanne Rafaela.

Most likely, Reyes starts and Hamilton takes the utility infielder role. I doubt any moves happen, since it doesn’t look like a long term solution is needed yet…

If Grissom starts on the IL, I'd go with Rafaela as the starting 2Bman.

If he'll just miss 2-3 games, I might still do it.

Reyes. Rafaela in CF. All of Rafaela’s value is in his glove IN CF.

No.

Rafaela’s versatility is best left under glass that’s only broken in case of emergency. If Duran is the opening day CF, Rafaela can return to Polar Park for a while.

Of course, it’s also possible (likely?) Rafaela is the opening day CF with Duran in LF and Abreu returning to Worcester. In which case, Reyes is the makeshift 2b and Hamilton opens the season on the bench…

Hasn’t Cora said that E Valdez is the likely candidate to fill in at 2B?

Great. That should round out the questionable infield defense perfectly.

I wish Cora would just set that guy’s glove on fire. But if he’s truly thinks this guy is an option, then that’s on Cora and his extremely questionable valuation of infield defense, an odd trait for a former infielder…

no s***. Cora probably hates that Kike just recently resigned with the Dodgers.

Of course, I prefer Rafaela in CF over everyone else, but if the plan was to start him in AAA, I'd rather have him at 2B than Reyes or Eavldez or DHam.

Impressed most with two players I have seen so far: sogard and slaten.

Has anyone mentioned Sogard as an early season replacement for Grissom? I get the major obstacle is that he’s not on the 40 man roster. But he could be, once they (finally) DFA Joe Jacques…

I’m actually worried Whitlock is pitching his way into the rotation…

i could care less about ST results. they are basically 5-6 inning games followed by 3-4 innings of reserves

It is good that some players are already clicking. It’s not like he said he was excited about their W-L record.

The goals in ST are usually just 1) get loose and 2) don’t get hurt. For some of the MiLB guys, notably Sogard, they have the added goal of getting noticed…

I think the FO is determined to use this season as the one where we find out which of our pitchers can be counted on as SP'ers, going forward. It makes some sense for a "punt season," and this might be one reason why they don't want a guy like Monty starting 32 games and going 180 IP. It would cut into their experiment.

A rotation slot is Bello's to lose, this year.

Pivetta is a FA, after this year, but he seems like a lock on one slot, as is Gio.

That's 3 slots taken.

The other two will be used to try and find out, if we have any keepers for the future rotation.

Crawford should get the inside shot at winning one.

Houck and Whitlock look to have the best chance to win the 5th slot, but the "stretching out" of Wink puts a squeeze on opportunities, unless there is an injury, of someone fails miserably, early on in 2024 and is replaced.

The FO sees the team as having 7 guys for 5 SP slots.

Many of us disagree with this approach, but it seems to be what it will be.

Of course, looking good in ST'ing does not mean it transfers to the regular season, but I have to think it's better than looking bad.

That being said, this is early ST'ing, so more AAA type players are playing, so success must be taken with a grain of salt.
