They did not "have to," but they did. In one breath you blsme JH not Bloom, then say there was no "impossible" budget situation (implied for building the roster back up.].

The Red Sox should spend more, which is on John. Bloom should have done a better job even knowing the self imposed constraints put upon him. Over the past 4 years, they both were at fault.

Bloom just needed one more offseason to dawdle and he could have figured it out!

Bloom made moves during the off-season. Once April rolled around, he fell into a deep sleep…

Truly glorious moves they were!

All he really has is the Schwarber deal. (McGuire, Shaw, Iggy and Robles were okay.)

(Abreu might change the narrative, a bit.)

Schwarber is also Bloom's most costly blunder. Over 100 homers the past two years, including two postseasons, which he homered his team into.

In '22 and '23, Schwarbs would've lured tons of younger fans who love the longball into Fenway. Tom Werner wouldn't even have to offer student discounts -- just think of the profits!

Schwarber wanted a lot of money, so it's hard for me to say it was a blunder not to outbid DD for him.

Again, we're always loaded with LF'ers and were back then, too.

Might also be worth mentioning - John fired DD and hired Bloom!

He made moves. Maybe not moves you liked, but he did his due diligence (except for Mondesi) and acquired players.

In July, he was useless…

Schwarber makes $20M AAV. Yoshida gets $18.6M. Forget WAR -- which guy do more fans want to pay to see?

I always thought the biggest blunder was the Yankees not signing Schwarber. With his pull power in that ballpark with that short porch in right -- for a guy who already looks like Babe Ruth (at least jogging around the bases)...

2020 - Perez, Peraza, Pillar, Arauz, Munoz, Puello, Lucroy, Mazza, Springs, Weber, Valdez, Brice, Osich, Covey

2021 - Perez, Richards, Marwin, Sawamura, Ottavino, Andriese, Kiké, Whitlock, Renfroe

2022 - Story, JBJ, Wacha, Hill, Strahm, Diekman

2023 - Masa, Duvall, Mondessi, Tapia, Alfaro, Kluber, Martin, Jansen, Bleier, Joely

Maybe moves I didn't like? To me, it looks like he hit on .333 of the above guys. Not really great. Should be closer to .500 IMO.

No Schreiber in 2021?

Also, compared to 2024 with O’Neill, Giolito, Grisham and Slaten, Bloom looks like an annual house cleaner…

But what is the expectation when signing guys to $1-$5M deals?

I'm thinking .333 is about average.

Bloom had 20+ slots to fill in 2020 and a tiny winter budget, so of course he had to add more. He was forced into quantity over quality.

Once we hit 2022 and 2023, that changed, or should have.

They seem to just be running it back this year.

Very bogus too.

These are the guys that left before he took over:

Holt

Pearce

Moreland

Porcello

Cashner

Chacin

Wright

Owings

Gorkys

Josh Smith

That's 10 guys, most of which were at the bottom end of the 40 man. 5 guys to replace. Brought back Moreland. Replaced Holt with Arauz/Peraza. Was it that hard to replace Pearce, Porcello and Cashner? He never tried to replace Porcello. He replaced Cashner with Perez. Pearce was upgraded with Pillar. Nobody is worried about losing Chacin, Wright, Owings, Gorkys Hernandez or Josh Smith. All the other changes were made by Bloom.

Giolito is just this year's Kluber. Not saying it will turn out as badly...

If it goes badly, we're stuck with him!

He has said the 20+ so many times the last two years, and I’m sure he believes it, because it fits his narrative on Bloom. Probably says it in his sleep too. There’s no guy like Bloom, there’s no guy like Bloom.

I'm just glad if he's good, he's gone. Don't all sustained contenders do that to their starting rotations?

Could trade him at the deadline or offer him a QO?

A team like the Sox should have at least gotten him on a 2 year deal unless they had something bigger planned for next year.

Your obsession with moon is far, far creepier…

And if it goes well, he gets an easily rejectable qualifying offer…

Or a trade at the deadline? Sox may be over the CBT at the deadline and it would be a waste to go the QO route as you'd only get a 4th rounder on a QO offer.
