That stuff doesn't go away after two 78 win seasons.

It’s more than just two 78 win seasons. Letting Bogey go, and trading Mookie weren’t good looks for Boston. Not to mention that 10+ candidates wouldn’t even interview for what Sam thinks is the most prestigious job in baseball in being the HOBO of the Boston Red Sox.

Bogaerts was massively overpaid by SD. I don't think that's an issue. Not sure anyone outside of 495 cares about the CBO drama the media ran with. Yeah, Mookie shouldn't have been traded, but he's not the only star player that has left an organization. The way us as fans perceive the negative internal workings of the Red Sox isn't the same as someone outside like Yamamoto. He just wants to get paid and live somewhere he likes. Maybe Masa will have nice things to say?

Nola re-signed with the Phillies when he reportedly had bigger offers.

What report? And of course, there are exceptions.

How much bigger?

Think anyone offered him $200mil?

Safe bet those offers were right around what Philly offered and he took the status quo…

Different angle: is it possible Nola lost - or did not gain - at least another $50 million, had he waited until after Yamamoto signs?

After all, Nola has had a lot more success in the majors than Mr. Moto Risin...

Hometown discount (within reason). He didn't sign to some rando team for less money.

Yes. If someone offered an extra 75M, he's moving.

I’m surprised anyone would need that much incentive to move out of Philadelphia…

He's probably living outside of Philly, but to each their own. Some people are just addicted to cheez whiz on steak!

Bogey ending up being massively overpaid by SD isn’t an issue. The issue is that Bogey should have been locked up long before he had a chance to opt-out. The CBO drama was seen throughout MLB, and beyond.

If the Sox don’t get Yamamoto, the logical pivots are Snell, Montgomery, and Burnes…

Or maybe Luzardo, Framber Valdez or some under the radar trade target.

I could see us settling on Stroman and Imanaga.

Devers might have some encouraging words, too.

If it's about letting stars go, why would Yamo sign with the team that just traded Verlander and Scherzer? The team that finished 4 games in front of the Nats, who were the 2nd worst team in the NL.

MLB Players: "Hey, we gotta go to that franchise that will never think about us testing FA and treats everything like it's a 1975 again!"

No, not Stroman!!!

He might have gotten close to $75M more, had he waited.

Curious why you chose $75M. Is $70M more not "all about the money?" How about $50M or $25M?

Some players take a hometown discount. That is the only exception to the rule, but it's very, very rare. Tek, Nola, anyone else?

75M was just an example, it wasn't a specific amount for a specific purpose.

I agree.

Joe Mauer.

Very few, but many sign extensions, so they are not counted as FAs taking less. They are still players not choosing more money.

Papi, Pedey and Bogey took less than they could have gotten as FAs.

I think the Mets upgraded their farm in those trades.

Plus Cohen is obviously willing to spend whatever it takes.

Pedey took the largest 2B contract ever signed!!!!

The same reason that players went to Texas last year after the disastrous 2022 season even though Texas made some big signings before the 2022 season.

Theur farm is still not as good as ours, and our top 6 are all due in 1-2 years, and 9 of top 11, too.

I have already mentioned Cohen will spend way more, but he has shown it does not lead to wins.

There are no guarantees that any franchise will be successful for the next decade.

But having an owner with a ton of money who wants badly to win surely helps the profile a bit.

Of course. I’m just not buying the idea that the Mets, Yanks and Giants look any more like future winners than us.

If anything, we MIGHT look better positioned.
