So if Shaughnessy's article is indicative, Boston media will be putting a lot of the heat on ownership for their part in this, i.e. trading Betts and cutting the budget.

Sez Shaughnessy:

Bloom’s tenure saw considerable dropoff in fan interest as the Sox lurched toward irrelevance in a competitive sports market. Boston’s beleaguered baseball boss seemed to care more about his coveted draft picks than the success of the major league team. He gave Cora a misfit roster sprinkled with spare parts (Franchy Cordero?) forced to play out of position. He left Cora without enough healthy arms on multiple occasions.

He sure didn't seem to care about the draft slot drop for going over the tax line, last year.

Shaughnessy doesn't let every single fact get in the way, of course.

There are a few guys, I just don't read anymore, even if the headline is flashy. Actually, especially if the headline is flashy.

I hope the next GM embraces a balanced approach and not one end of the spectrum, like we have seemed to hire after Theo left.

I'm all for a few prospect trades sprinkled into the resume.

I'm all for more success with large and moderate FA signings.

I'm all for a few gems in the roughs found here and there.

I'm all for JH & Co. loosening up the pursestrings, this winter and beyond.

I hope this isn't some lame attempt to shift blame and then not change the philosophy.

Some managers get accused of hooking their pitchers too early. Henry is Captain Hook when it comes to CBO's. 3 guys in a row hooked after the 4th inning.

We haven’t had anyone like that since Epstein.

Cherington just flat out refused to trade prospects. Dombrowski filled the roster with too many large contracts. Bloom refused to deal prospects and refused to address obvious flaws…

The swinging pendulum.

Even Theo admitted he got away from the balanced approach, too much, but he was nowhere near like any of the 3 that followed.

In other words, you're a Bloom fan. Personally, I'd rather be watching generational talents like Betts every night, and productive players I've grown to like like Bogaerts, Benintendi, Vasquez, etc, rather than presumed bargains like Story and Kluber. If that means a billionaire spends more of his money, I don't give a crap.

It remains to be seen how well these guys work out. I happen to think it is a significant improvement over the foundation of 2020, but so much is on paper and speculative.

Many of Bloom's initial draft picks we HS players, but he did end up getting some impactful prospects, who graduated under him or will soon via trades and Rule 5, most notably Whitlock, Wink, Wong, Abreu, EValdez, Bernardino & Z Kelly.

I'm not happy or sad about Bloom's firing. I kinda feel bad they sorta made him out to be the fall guy, when I don't really think this was all his plan and chosen winter spending budgets. Lord knows, he made some doozie mistakes, and too many significant ones, too. His record on low budget pitching additions was likely his downfall. I do think others were right to point out his inability to pull the trigger on near miss trades and signings was a major fault, as well.

I wish him luck, elsewhere, as long as it is not a team in our backyard.

You guys have worse logic than my middle school students.

I wanted us to offer Betts $400M/14, and I'd like to still see him in a Sox uniform. Just because I don't think that trade was Bloom's choice doesn't make me his "fan." I rooted for him to do well, unlike some here.

Beni is a shell of his old self.

Bogey has not produced well in 3 years.

JD had a one year resurgence, but has missed some time. JT was better.

Vaz? Really?

You crack me up!

Sam Kennedy acknowledged the big indelible mark left on the organization by Bloom. Yeah NO MOOKIE BETTS. That left a mark.

Look under the bus.

As I said. You're a Bloom fan. (What I mean by this is that you judge players as machines that can be evaluated by metrics, many of which claim to be quantitative. I look at them as human beings I get attached to and enjoy watching play. )

I'm not, nor ever have been, a "Bloom fan." I don't see or judge players as machines.

I've played the great game of baseball for many years and wish I still could.

I watch just about every play of every Sox game, and really enjoy watching some players way more than others, and it has nothing to do with metrics.

JBJ was my fave for a while. I tend to enjoy watching great D, as that was about the only thing I was good at in baseball- that and BBs and baserunning.

My first favorite player was Tommy Harper, when he played in Milwaukee- where I liked in the late 60's.

I happen to like numbers, and I don't understand why people think fans who like numbers can't enjoy the game, like they do.

Wouldn’t matter. I’d give up Sale’s contract for a low A 25 year old.

Exactly, and if the kid never amounted to anything, what was lost?

Same with the JD failed trade and the subsequent drop in draft slots on the comp picks. He thought he was "worth more."

Whoever they get needs to be a clear improvement on Bloom.

Yes, and they need to change their philosophy, at the top, as in spending patterns.

This is on Henry, though. And it fits the pattern. Bring in a builder and sack them when the owner gets sick of building. Then bring in a guy who will burn it to the ground for a short window and fire him when the earth is salted and nothing can grow

Not untrue, but it works better than your ownership group overly loyal to Cashman.

Per @bradfo:

Chaim Bloom had to chance to trade Chris Sale last year, after the bike accident.

The inquiring team was even willing to take on his FULL remaining money.

$55,000,000.00

And Bloom said no.

If this is true. Holy s***

A good piece by Kiley McDaniel at ESPN on the firing

Look at what the Red Sox asked of Dombrowski before him. He came in as an old-school choice to replace process-oriented executives (Ben Cherington and eventually Mike Hazen) and asked to produce action, results and fireworks. The Red Sox got just that, then decided they craved a pendulum shift -- back to a process-driven approach to rebuilding the underlying talent they had just let go as a strategy.

Running the Red Sox under owner John Henry is a job that demands more -- win titles or pack your bags -- than any other club in baseball. It's a level of expectation you'd only see from an insecure English Premier League club or the most ruthless SEC football program. Even the Yankees -- zero titles in 14 years, but the same general manager the whole time -- will make decisions based more on a consistent plan and process more than the results. That's the prerogative of the owners, as is the payroll, but it can make for a negative long-term association with the club.

Bogey is 20th in WAR since 2021

He is doing just fine. A lot better than Story.

Zero chance it’s true.

Why would any GM want Sale at full price? Most pitchers making half as much don’t get traded to a team that takes on the full contract. I mean, the only reason to trade for a Sale at all last year would have been to add him while Boston paid the bill.

And to offer to take the full contract AFTER an injury? No f***ing way. There’s just no GM other that stupid…
