I don't believe a team has ever redone the contract for current year.

Casas extension has to be done prior to season opener.

I think it has happened. I can't name specifics.

From what he's said, I think Casas realizes he can make himself a bunch of money by having a big season and improving his fielding, then talking extension again.

Prior to BOS season opener or is it too late already since LAD had their opener?

Maybe? 1b's aren't really bringing in the dough the way they used to.

After cassas, does rafeala or Whitlock become the next to get locked up?

The latter two have to prove they can play ... honestly, my bet might be Abreu.

Whitlock has already been extended. He’s signed through 2026 for $17.5mill with two options…

Well the off season is over, tomorrow is the real season. I find myself maybe a little bit- oddly excited for baseball season; however, I also know we are putting out the same exact team as last year...(I know it's not but it feels the same). We don't have a real second baseman- we don't have any proven starting pitchers, our bull pen is going to get over worked..... No Duvall or Turner. I'm excited for the regular season... and at the same time wondering how long it will take to see the bottom fall out from under this years team.

Two big surprises I'm betting (hoping) on this year..... Story has a good year with the bat and stays healthy, and Houck makes a big step forward putting together a nice year as a starter. We will find out soon.

It’s absolutely baffling that the Sox didn’t make a stronger play for JMont. 1 yr deal, $25 mil. That’s the going rate per annum of a 3 right now but usually over a 6 year term.

Absolutely not true.

In the past 3 years, the only pitchers to receive a $25mill AAV (or more) over at least 6 years are Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinubo Yamamoto and Carlos Rodon, none of whom anyone would consider a 3. Aaron Nola missed by less than $1mill per year.

This year, the only other pitchers to receive a $25mill AAV for less than 6 seasons were Snell and Sonny Gray. They are not 3’s.

It’s not a commonplace salary that some 90 pitchers in MLB are going to get…

I'm not saying Montgomery would be a Red Sox today if only Brez offered $26 mil, but it's irksome that the Sox finally admitted they are all-out (opposite of all-in) and yet still decided a few months ago it was a good idea to blow $39 mil on another pitcher who sucked the past two years.

If the plan was to add a veteran innings-eater to stabilize the starting rotation, which -- even if you're not going for it this year -- is invaluable in any rebuild to the development of younger starters and preservation of relief arms going forward, then it's depressing as a fan when your team changes its mind in the same offseason.

Well, you can't say they didn't warn us. At the joyous Winter Weekend Sammy said the payroll would be lower and they didn't line up on any of the big name free agents.

Baffling the Yanks didn't swoop in.

We know why the Sox did not. No mystery.

Not really baffling with the Yanks, because they're in a 110% tax bracket. That makes a $25 million salary cost $52.5 million.

The Montgomery deal is absolutely infuriating.

Sox could have offered 3/75 and he would have turned them down IMO.

Why would the Red Sox want to pay a guy who was good the past two years for three different teams, when instead they could blow twice as much on a guy who sucked for three teams?

So you think it's a matter of the length of the deal for the Sox? Montgomery on a 1 year deal really doesn't make sense for them, but goddamn, at least it would show they were trying.

I had a strong feeling Monty would end up getting a deal we'd pine for, but this blew my mind.

I've been cutting JH a lot of slack, over the past few years, but this is pushing me to the brink of total disgust.

He'd have probably taken $65M/3, or at worst $70M/3. Even if he got buy-outs after each year, this was a no-brainer, assuming he'd want to pitch for us.

MLB.com listed their power rankings for SP'ers. It's interesting to see 3 of the top 6 were traded, recently (4 were traded since 2019):

1. Strider

2. Burnes

3. Wheeler

4. Lopez

5. Gallen (traded in 2019)

6. Castillo

Remember that team that used to trade for aces every 4-5 years?

That looks like the staff of my fantasy team, plus Wheeler and Strider…

No opt out? Definitely, and not because it was the Sox…

Would have been nice if they tried, though.

They were connected enough. I’d like to know if they made an actual offer and what it was…

I wouldn’t want a Montgomery on a one year deal after he missed all of spring training…

It's funny how Burnes was 8th in NL Cy Young voting last year, but now that he's on everybody's darling Orioles, he's the second-best starter in both leagues.

He is third in fWAR in MLB in the past 3 years, behind only Wheeler and Gausman and just ahead of Cole and Nola…

Sure, but these lists are current -- Cole is on the IL, so he's out of the top 10. Also, Glasnow made #10 over kajillionaire teammate Yo Yama, who bombed in his debut (though he's still somehow #30-something overall...)
