Would have been nice if they tried, though.

There both was and was not standing offer to Montgomery if you believe it.

He is third in fWAR in MLB in the past 3 years, behind only Wheeler and Gausman and just ahead of Cole and Nola…

Buoyed by his 7.5 fWAR three years ago.

You could say the same thing about Wheeler, except it was only 7.2…

I would NOT say the samples look the same to me. Wheeler's second best season is +1 greater than Burnes. Same with the third season. Burnes is also trending DOWN, especially when you look on Statcast. That's not the case for Wheeler.

They were connected enough. I’d like to know if they made an actual offer and what it was…

Yes, the Interest Kings do stay engaged and connected.

Carrabis said that his contacts told him two different messages. One said there was a standing offer. The other said the other person was wrong and there was no standing offer. Maybe one was made and pulled at some point?

So now you come around to that theory.

You could say Wheeler's numbers were buoyed by his season 3 years ago, right?

(Not to the same extent, but it's true.)

No.

Wheeler's next best season was only 1.3 fWAR less. Burnes' was almost 3!

I just don't like the cut of Burnes' jib. He's a good pitcher, but I don't think I was ever ALL IN on trading for him.

Looks like the Dodgers are about to lock up Will Smith with a 10 year extension for the soon to be 29 year old.

There may be deferred money and a guarantee of $140M.

Breaking news:

The SOX just picked up a starter from the Rays. His name is Uwasawa, who is 30 years old. The trade involved cash going to Tampa. In 10 years of pitching in Japan he had a 3.19ERA.

He's a finesse pitcher whose fastball is in the 90mph range.

Tampa had him on a minor league deal, but not sure if he had an upward mobility clause and can refuse assignment to Worcester.

Soft tosser. Presumably a depth option…

He was also pretty awful in ST from what I remember. AAA depth at best.

That’s what I remember too. Garbage.

Naoyuki Uwasawa struck out Rafael Devers earlier this spring.

Overall line: 9.2 IP, 14 ER, 15 Hits, 9 Ks, and 8 BBs.

Thank You, one and all for a great off season analysis of the Red Sox team and its foibles, BUT now the Off Season is over and hopefully now we can comment on players in real games.

The story on the Red Sox offer to Imanaga has leaked:

https://www.si.com/fannation/mlb/fastball/news/boston-red-sox-insider-alex-speier-details-the-offer-shota-imanaga-rejected-before-joining-the-chicago-cubs

Predictably they fell well short of the mark again by offering a 2 year deal that 'could' vest into 4 years.

Seriously is anybody surprised they keep getting rejected with these types of lowball offers to free agents?

Pretty shameful stuff and it seems to reinforce the 'free agents' are shocked by how bad the Red Sox offers have been.

Business as usual at Yawkey Way - cheap your way to a lower salary spend. Who needs talent unless it's dirt cheap?!

smoke gets the award for the loudest complaint about Imanaga.

We offered imanaga two years, with a chance to earn another two years?????

We are intent on going short years with pitchers, yet we have very little on the farm coming up to replace guys.

We are not signing any highly ranked international arms.

I am not sure I understand our long term pitching strategy????

Another Imanaga comment.

Imanaga seemed interesting at the price

There's been a lot of Goldilocks/sour grapes going on. At the start of FA season it seemed like there were plenty of worthwhile targets.

If we thought we were in on Snell or Montgomery we'd feel differently.

You're saying you're fine with them not being on the Sox, but they're much better than anything we have. When people say things like that I just don't get it.

My first comment about Imanaga.

I wrote this back on Sept 1st in response to a post about moving Houck and Whitlock into set up/long men roles...

I wouldn't mind us having 4 guys in that role:

Houck

Whitlock

Pivetta

Crawford

Set-up:

Martin

Winckowski

Schreiber

Closer:

Jansen

(No way this ever happens. We'd need to add 4 SP'ers or 3 and hope for a Sale miracle.)
