According to Heyman Sonny Gray is signing with the Cardinals.

There is also a report that Monty may sign with TEX, NYY or STL. (My guess is, if STL signs Gray, they will pass on Monty.)

Marcus HDMH Stroman doesn’t get nearly enough mention, which is odd from a group of fans fascinated by Michael Wacha…

The fascination is pretty simple - Stroman is a better pitcher than Wacha, but over the last two seasons Wacha produced similar results for a lot less money.

Every team pretty much is looking for starting pitching, so that drives up the price. It’ll be interesting to see what Gray gets as he just turned 34. According to reports the deal could be finalized totay.

If that happens all that's left of the Big 5 is Yamamoto and Snell.

if they sign neither of these two (which i don't expect), then Brez is just Bloom 2.0.

Yeah, this is the question. Are they really going to give us Bloom 2.0? If the fans and media sense that's what's going on, the backlash should be epic.

Not if he starts trading prospects... which is the only alternative for upgrades, unless the owners let him SPEND, as promised...

This idea doesn't make any goddamn sense.

The Winter Fan Fest isn’t that far off, and I don’t know if JH would make another appearance to get his standing ovation again if nothing significant is done. Bloom won’t be around to take some of the heat off him either.

Because of this point.

Stroman has had almost zero mention all off-season out here, and he settled for a ridiculously short deal with Chicago…

Whether it's fair or not, he does have the "head case" image.

The short deal was good, but $25 M isn't Chump AAV.

I'm a fan of Stroman, and he's just a more expensive and marginally healthier version of Wacha. It depends on what the contract is.

Montgomery and Gray seemed like pretty good targets, but what do I know. I'm sure our front office has it all scoped out.

If we miss out on both Gray and Monty, I see Yamo and Snell as the only top quality SP'ers left on the FA board.

Maybe we trade for Cease or Burnes and sign Lugo.

The big problem is that these two are a lot of teams targets.

if the Sox follow their past few years philosophy i expect them to shop in your 3rd category. If they sign Stroman i am turning in my Red Sox cap.

Why?

Stroman: 3.73 ERA, 3.64 xFIP, 275 INN

Wacha: 3.27 ERA, 4.23 xFIP, 261 INN

Similar over the past two years. That's Stroman at his worst (injured) and Wacha at his most productive. If you look at the past three years, it gets worse for Wacha.

Agreed, but like I say, Wacha's AAV was 25-30% as much, that's why I got the warm and fuzzies for him.

The head case has had a much more productive career than Wacha.

All of these pitchers are a lot of teams targets. That's the problem with acquiring pitchers solely via FA and not being able to develop your own SP.

Yes, the contract terms matter A LOT.

Stroman's talent is not in question.

I won't be unhappy if we sign him.

It seems like some people are for some reason? IDK. He's a guy that plays with a lot of passion and heart. He's pretty fun to watch. I think he would grow on a lot of Sox fans.

Yes, he's a guy that is terminally online and that's a growing problem for many players, but 95% of Sox fans wouldn't even know or care about it.

If Snell signs soon, presumably not with us, then we're sort of in "Waiting for Yamamoto" mode. That might not be much fun, because what are the odds we're going to outbid all the other high rollers?

so draft more shortstops, right?

If he's the best pitcher we add, I won't be very happy.

If they have the best shot to make it to the bigs and produce, YES!

Draft one every year, if that's the way the cards are stacked.
