Snell and Montgomery are known commodities. You pretty much know what you are getting. Yamamoto is more of a gamble. He might be better than either of those guys or he could be a colossal bust. Is Breslow a gambler ?

Unliklely unless health related.

But if this statement isn't too ridiculous -- "Their inability to develop pitching isn't the problem" -- on a Red Sox forum where the majority of posters say it is...

... then the majority of talksox just must be ridiculous, instead.

That's my opinion. Everyone here is welcome to disagree.

Not probably unlikely, but it’s far from a sure thing that he’ll be as good as all the hype either, and either way it will be a big risk with all the money that will be involved.

The way market rate is going, 225/7 is not going to be a big deal for an above average starter (which is his floor) as soon as 2025.

Health looms over every pitching contract though.

Which is why I made the caveat. You have to assume any and all pitchers will lose at least 1.5 years of any contract.

Senga

MLB: 3.52 ERA, 3.63 FIP, 166 Inn, 202 K, 77 BB

Japan '22: 1.89 ERA, 148 Inn, 156 k, 50 BB

Yamamoto

Japan '23: 1.16 ERA, 171 Inn, 176 K, 28 BB

Projection?: 3.20 ERA, 185 Inn, 185 K, 40 BB

If he does that projection, he's an ace.

You vastly underrate Clevinger and overrate Lugo…

Agreed on Clevinger.

I'd be fine changing my 3rd tier to...

7. Clevinger

8. Lugo

9. Wacha

I knoe I'm putting a lot of faith into the one good season Lugo had in 2023, as a starter, but I think you overvalue Stroman. (I almost put him in the third tier.

A lot of projections have ERod coming back home to BOS. Fine?

I'd love ERod as the second best SP'er we acquire, this winter.

I agree. I was just looking at how Senga adjusted and projected there. The same way Suzuki and Matsui's rookie OPS's look a lot like Masa's rookie season. Both of those guys bounced back in year 2. We'll see if Masa can as well.

Every big signing is an "if." Of course, some look less risky than other, especially those one year contracts Bloom fell in love with.

IMO, we need to bite the bullet and take a chance on someone. We have the budget space. If we don't go for quality signings, we'll end up taking the Bloom path, again. Sign 5 guys for $10M/1, instead of one guy for $50M/5 or $200M/7.

@mikedeportes

Sources: Boston, Toronto, Houston and a mysterious team are very interested in the services of right-handed pitcher Domingo Germán.

So much for "staying away from the bad news guys".

Maybe we're a player for Bauer, after all...

Bauer, Clevinger, German... Maybe Urbina can be part a MiLB pitching coordinator.

BUY LOW!

Forget the Rays North label, let's go "Raiders East!"

@mike_petriello

Dave Roberts just said on MLB Network that Mookie Betts will be "the everyday second baseman."

Red Sox need a RHB at 2B too!

Given the consensus surrounding Clevinger and Bauer, safe bet we’d be more judgmental.

Ignoring the alcohol issues, does anyone think he's a good pitcher?

Not me.

Not bad- but not good, either:

102 ERA+ since 2019 is not bad

4.56 FIP Meh

4.22 ERA Meh

1.14 WHIP is not bad

No Wander Franco for 2b?

Fairly certain the alcohol issues were his sacrificial lamb to get out of any domestic abuse program…
