Wander Franco is an Uber talented 22 year old switch hitting 5 tool player. His weakness? He’s a pedophile. Is this immorally and ethically an issue? Sure, but you won’t have a chance to acquire a guy like his often: similar to how the Yankees acquired Aroldis Chapman when he beat his wife. The Yankees bought low on Chapman, traded him for Gleyber Torres:

Do you think it would really hurt if we contacted the rays and offered like Bobby Dalbec and some low end prospects? Even if he gets like 5 years in prison we won’t pay him and he’ll be on the restricted list and he’ll only be 27

I know Chaim can be crafty and this seems like a move that as long as ignore his off the field baggage could be a steal.

Not so wild about this idea.

Now Franco certainly deserves the opportunity to defend himself and his innocence. And it might not be true. (Anyone remember former Sox infielder Julio Valdez had a similar accusation that I believe fell apart after further investigation?). But Franco, a married father of two, could be innocent and still be a dirtbag…

Let's see: Verdugo, McQuire ... Sounds like a perfect Bloom signing to me.

Verdugo was cleared of any wrongdoing years ago. But I guess accusations are as good as guilt…

I also think bringing up McGuire;s past as being comparable is pushing bounadaries.

I just picture all the creeps on here McGuiring every time they push "reply" anyway.

How old was the woman in question? Franco is 22, she could have been 17.

Now, while I consider that inappropriate, that certainly doesn't make someone a "pedophile" and I find it highly inappropriate to just liberally use such a term.

14.

Yeah, that's a little bit more inappropriate for my comfort level. But how old was he at the time?

His current age.

His current age.

I mean, I wouldn't call him a pedophile, but certainly a predator, and enough of an age gap to make me think twice about signing him.

And there are multiple accusers (all underage) now according to reports in the DR.

Yeah, that's definitely sexual predator status then if there are many coming forward. If it was just one I'd say there's a chance the allegations are false, but the odds of that dramatically drop when there are multiple accusers.

Yeah, 14 year old girls.

Or how about just don't touch children in general? Seems like a fair enough concept for most people.

I know women lie about their age A LOT, it's happened to me before, although not such a stark difference, but I feel like you should be able to tell a 14 year old girl is underage.

It's not always that easy, anymore, as girls mature much earlier than years ago, and if the Mom says she's 18, I'm thinking, who can you trust?

I'm not defending the guy, at all. Just saying...

Yes he was, and he seems to have been a model citizen since (except for a couple of incidents this season, which in fact surprised me). But he was still under a cloud when he was signed. This isn't about Verdugo/McQuire/Franco. It's about the opportunities Bloom sees for getting players cheap, without consideration of what it is that makes them cheap.

Absolutely. All McGuire ruined was his own reputation…

It’s probably worth noting Franco is extraordinarily wealthy and often players like him are targeted in schemes, scams and crimes for their money. We’ve heard stories of player’s family members getting abducted (such as with Elias Diaz) or players themselves getting abducted (Wilson Ramos) and even killed outright (Luis Valbuena) in the course of crimes.

I’m reserving judgment and letting MLB sort this one out. And I say this as a parent of a daughter a little older than the alleged victim…

The poster known as Stephen Curry has an offbeat and interesting sense of humor. This was clearly satire. I don't think he actually wants to acquire Franco.

I think Chaim Bloom and the Sox will justifiably stay way from Wander Franco.

In fact, to be perfectly honest, I'm fine with the Rays sorting this thing out. If he's innocent, they should keep him because he's a terrific ballplayer they've already invested in. If he's predatory, he should go to jail.

That's fair, it's true that sexual assaulters are more than ONE-time offenders so when multiple accusers step forward it is logical and probably increases the odds that the victims are telling the truth AND also true that people who are wealthy can be targets of false allegations. It's a weird situation to be in where a woman should get the benefit of the doubt, believe, and be treated like a victim but at the same time a guy's life shouldn't be ruined and he should receive due process (the later often does not happen). People seem to look at those two things as being mutually exclusive.

I say this as a father to a boy, a girl, and as a survivor myself.
