For those who don’t know, the Sox are probably not going to sign this guy. They won’t have the money if they sign all their other picks. This is an insurance pick in case they can’t sign someone else.

He's only ranked 226. They could sign him if they other guys are far enough under slot. Rumor is that Teel was under slot. A lot of the other picks were under slot guys. They got Brannon last year and nobody thought he would sign.

I strongly doubt it, love it if it happened. But it probably means their 3rd pick is way over slot

If Call was more than a contingency pick he would have gone in the 11th. They wouldn’t have left him on the board after 1-10

Write up on the signing period:

I wasn't aware that not signing a player in rounds 1-10 means you lose that slot money, too.

Yup, that’s why after the first couple rounds the best guys left often stay on the board until after the 10th round. Teams go under slot to save up money. Sox have 3 high schoolers past the 10th round. I think they can sign one of them.

Exactly, when they draft these kids they have a really good ideal if what it take to sign them.

With that said, ever so often you get a Judd Fabian.

Good read. Makes me feel better about drafting a catcher from college.

Buster Posey and Adley Rutschman are good enough evidence for me.

I guess Kottaras, Lavarnway and Swihart soured me a bit.

Kottaras: 20th round draft pick

Lavarnway: 6th round draft pick

Swihart was signed out of High School

How are they similar to Teel?

What if he’s “just” Mike Zunino?

You really need an explanation?

I read this earlier today. I used to have a huge bias against drafting catchers, now I feel really really really good about this pick.

A top tier catcher? Draft them. Anything else is a shot in the dark. If they guy can stick behind the plate like Adley, it's definitely worth it.

Apparently theres' a very stark difference between highschool and college catchers taken in the first round. Teel is a relatively safe pick...with upside.

Worst case is you hope the bat plays elsewhere. Henry Davis has caught all of 1 inning so far…

He will get his team behind the dish, they still have Hedges.

Teel's defense is supposed to be good enough to play the position.

There was a lot of talk about Davis sticking, too, once Robo Umps eliminated his pitch-framing weakness…

I believe Teel is a good framer though.
