Do you know him personally, in order to make this claim?

Nothing needed to know besides: 1. plays a kid's game; 2. gets free uniforms and equipment; 3. team covers transportation, meals, massages 4. club owners bribe him to play forever with 331 million-dollar bills

Okay, this was goddamned funny. A+.

But he’s doing all that in a watered down league…

Watered down league? Where would you rank this Red Sox team in terms of talent in the last 10 years? How about the Yankees? Baltimore is doing pretty good, but I don’t see any Brooks, or Frank on the team, or anything resembling Palmer on the pitching staff.

Eye test was initially used to refute new school stats. Now it's used to even refute counting stats like HR's and RBI that they used to have boners for. It's just obvious that they don't like the guy which is why the eye test is inherently flawed due to personal biases.

"Oh, he has a baby brain."

"All THOSE HR's don't count, just the ones I like."

Complain about his defense! His offensive stats are fine though. His chase rate is better than it used to be. He's hitting the ball as hard as ever. His whiff rate is down.

SWho is refuting any stats. All I said was just going by the eye test, and if you didn’t have the stats posted every AB for every game on every day I would think he wouldn’t have the power numbers that he does. Even on the NESN telecast they have mentioned more than once how Raffy was stuck on a HR, or RBI number. That’s just pointing out the facts. On there though that means Raffy is being bashed, and that means they just don’t like the guy. You can remember many of JT’s big hits so far this year, but how many can you remember of Raffy? The eye test were initially used to refute the new school stats? The eye test has been around before baseball was invented.

No, the analytics say that his defense is terrible.

Disagree. His DWAR is -0.3, which means his defense cost the Sox 1/3 of a win vs average MLB third baseman.

Adley may be the best catcher in the league. If you can't tell that by watching the O's, I can't trust your eye test.

Wrong. A 0.0 WAR isn't for an average third baseman, it's for a replacement level player you bring up from AAA.

Yes he’s a good player, but to say he’s the best in the league doesn’t mean the league isn’t watered down. Do you think Baltimore has just gotten so much better that they have caught, and then passed teams, or do you think other teams have dropped in talent level, and now Baltimore has gone ahead?

dWAR is an analytic that is derived by a special group of nerds who ( allegedly) watch every pitch of every game and , with their expertise , come up with a stat known in the business as Ultimate Zone Rating or UZR for short. Then, using a secret formula , that is converted into dWAR , defensive wins above replacement , which basically tells you how many games a given player wins or loses on defense as opposed to the average jabroni. It is not clear just who these special nerds are or if they are doing this voluntarily . But it is all very scientific. So, don't depend on your eye test , instead go with UZR , which is essentially someone else's eye test.

I think they use some technological aids, Denny...

I believe OAA is computer based only if people want to use that one.

The league is not watered down. Brooks Robinson never had to try to hit a 103 mph heater or deal with the crazy sliders that guys throw now. He'd still be a great fielder though.

Sometimes it’s better to live in the past when the present isn’t all that bright, and the future that so many are anticipating will be awesome might not ever get there either.

I'm sure you were just as miserable back then too.

I’m not miserable now. Criticizing does not mean miserable, but thanks any way. High school, college, and NFL football is starting up not to mention the last week of NASCAR before the playoffs start. The best time of the year.

The past was not all that great until 2004, in terms of the Sox meeting up with the Promise Land- too bad the league was waterdown by then.

If you had to win it all to be great then I agree, but outside of that starting in 1967 my favorite team ever, and the teams of the 70’s were pretty good to me. It was better to win titles yes, but if it takes that to be great then I disagree.

THAT is your evidence that the league is watered down? Seriously?

“MLB is just watered down now! Back in the 1990’s, there were fifty Hall of Famers! Today? NOT ONE!! Not a single player playing today is in the Hall of Fame! This is just a pathetic watered down product played by NOBODIES!”

Have the Red Sox dropped in talent the last 5 years? Counting HOF are we?

I think being younger mad the game more enjoyable, but I wouldn't say the quality of players was better then.

LOL!

I still think the 2018 Sox team beats any team from the 70's, 80's, 90's and maybe even the 2003 and 2004 teams.

I think being younger made it more of a hero worship thing too.

We got worse in 2019, way worse in 2020, better in 2021, worse in 2022, but still better than 2020, and then better in 2023. I think we will be even better in 2024, because we have less major need areas, and the farm infusions are making an impact, finally!

We’ll never no, but the 1975 team had to knock off the 3 time defending champion A’s, and then take on the Big Red Machine, which both teams were the best of their times.

Certainly, that was true for me.

I've never felt closer to any Sox teams since the 70's, but I would not say those guys were better than some subsequent teams.

The improvement in pitching has been the most notable major improvement from the teams from the 70's to the Clemens era and then the Pedro era and beyond.

...and we came so close!

That 2004 team beat some great teams along the way, too. And, the playoffs were longer.

We beat a 92 win Angels, a 101 win Yankee team and then that 105 win Cardinals team.
