Casas OPS over the last month .758

MLB Average OPS in 2023 .727

I know it doesn't look pretty, but given his age and inexperience there's a lot of reason to expect him to adjust and only get better.

Can't sacrifice our young players' confidence to pursue a season that quite honestly, we all know will not result even in a PO berth for the Sox. This team is toast.

He's trending in the right direction, unlike some other young players on the team. If the Sox have the right coaching staff, they can teach him to be a better defender and get him to keep approaching his at bats in the best way possible.

You expect more than.750 from 1B, but I agree with Hugh. Casas should get a long look, but at this point, we may need to move some pieces to make Duvall fit in.

I don’t see Dalbec replacing Casas, although he looks to be earning another look with his numbers on the farm, but if Casas gets demoted it would be for Turner to play near FT 1B. Yoshida DH. Duvall in LF.

You mean like swinging the bat, and looking for a hit first instead of a walk, and stop taking all those called third strikes.

He has a 25% k looking %. Mookie Betts has a 36% k looking % and has watched more 3rd strikes gone by than Casas this year. Wade Boggs had a career 46% k looking %. The MLB average for 22/23 is 23%. He's taking a called 3rd strike at a league average rate.

You’re comparing Casas with Mookie, and Boggs? Wow! Boggs was one of a kind who would take two strikes right down the middle, and foul 6-7 tough pitches off to get another good pitch to hit. I don’t think Casa is in that category.

I was comparing him to other patient hitters that came off the top of my head. Is he Boggs or Betts? Of course not. Is his approach patient in the manner of Boggs or Betts? Yes.

Patience is usually a skill set that is highly predictive of MLB success. As a matter of fact, it was Yoshidas patience that drove me to defend him early in the season when 1/2 the board was sold that he was a bust who could not hit.

Casas is going to be fine.

I assume that’s just a theory as we don’t really see it…

There are some good posts on here. You just have to wade through the garbage to find them.

Considering what happens when it rains a lot here in the Western part of Santo Domingo, "wading through garbage" is kind of a innate skill here.

It’s the SLG that is lagging, but I’m fine leaving Casas at 1B, and maybe try a platoon, later, or when Duvall causes a squeeze

Duvall has also played 260 innings at 1B in his MLB career. He’s actually pretty versatile player. Which could lead to some platoon advantages.

One day Casas will be launching 35-40 bombs a season with a .400 OBP. They will remember us then.

And I have to give the Sox credit, they're not jerking Casas around at all. They're showing a lot of patience. Cora shot down the idea of Dalbec being promoted, maybe for that very reason.

Dalbec had his struggles defensively and offensively. Simply hitting more HR's at AAA shouldn't get him promoted.

Is dalbec a classic AAAA hitter?

I think they have done a solid job with being patient with Casas - and Casas deserves credit for not letting his approach go to seed. He has gotten on base enough to warrant some patience. I don't know if he lifts the ball enough for the 40 HR - but 25 HRs a year with a lot of doubles? Heck yeah. But I have no issues with him so far.

As a rookie, he has not earned the respect of the umps, who seem to be calling more close pitches strikes than balls. He could easily have .025 added to his OBP with calls made fairly or in his favor.

His D was supposed to be plus, so I'm not sure what happened there, but maybe it will improve, over time.

Yoshida missed last night's game with forearm soreness.

Hate to say it, but this signing could prove to be a bust.

Yoshida is a good hitter, but he's a pretty expensive DH without elite power, right now projecting at a 2 fWAR season.

And he's not young, and he's been missing games with various aches and pains.

Posted
He's already 30 years old. He's at his peak right now so it will only get worse as he ages

And his first season is on a team going nowhere.

Just might be a totally nonsensical use of $100 million plus...
