Yes, and it's things like this that make me question Bloom's acumen in some areas. His approach can be the best in the world, but if he whiffs on the big moves, it's a serious problem.

It's what doomed Ben.

All the $5-10M deals like Kluber, Richards, Perez, Wacha, Hill and Kike are stabs in the dark, in general, at those prices.

Story (1.5 years into a 6 year deal)

Yoshida (0.5 yrs into a 5 year deal)

Devers (starts next year)

Think inflation:

Ben started his career with a big salary dump trade, too. (Punto trade), then....

$110M/8 Pedey extension

$72M/7 Rusney

$39M/3 Vic

$32M/2 Napoli

$27M/2 Dempster (retired after 1 year)

These 2 signings for 2015 did him in:

$95M/5 Pablito

$88M/4 HRam

@redsoxstats

Masataka Yoshida has multiple hits in 12 of his past 17 games, going 75 PA, .417/.440/.681, 5 2B, 3B, 4 HR. He also has 5 stolen bases in that stretch, after having 3 in his first 71 games.

He's batting .320/.382/.506

AL Qualified:

AVG - 1st

OBP - 4th

SLG - 7th

K% - 3rd

Right now Yoshida's DWAR on espn stats is -1.0, and I think he's better than that. When the Sox beat the Mets 8-6, Yoshida made the final out (with a man on base) on one of the toughest catches in MLB--running toward/into that left field wall (along the 3d base line) which is almost in fair territory. We have had plenty of leftfielders who couldn't make that catch, and in this case it was huge.

He's adjusting to Fenway's eccentric left field and probably had some "learning curve moments" early in the year. If I had to guess, that number will get better as he gains experience out there.

I just watched that replay a few times. It was basically a can of corn pop fly that he was able to slow up to catch. I doubt that there were "plenty" of leftfielders that couldn't make that catch.

It might get mildly better, but he's not a good fielder by any stretch. Fenway is not the issue.

He would not be the first Red Sox left fielder to not be very good defensively. From Teddy to Gator to Manny to JD to Yoshida. Yaz, though, Yaz was a great defender.

Probably a lot of 'em I left out, but my apologies to Jim Rice. by the time I appeared on the scene as a baseball fan he was a DH and Gator patrolled left at Fenway.

Troy O’Leary needs some Bad Glove Love, too

Troy gets Big Love for his Slam in 1999 Game 5 vs. Cleveland. An underrated moment.

It was so underrated -- O'Leary going deep after Cleveland walked Nomar intentionally in the 3rd -- that history repeated itself later IN THE SAME GAME... in the 7th: Nomar walked intentionally, O'Leary homering again. Grand slam, three-run homer, 7 RBI, 12-8 Boston win. And Pedro relieved in the 4th and threw a six-inning no-hitter.

Quick quiz: when the Sox were down 0-2 in the five-game series, who was Boston's starting shortstop in Game 3? Hint: Not Nomar, but his replacement went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one driven in.

Yoshida is tied with Duvall for 5th in fWAR among Sox position players at 1.2.

This signing is still not necessarily in the win column.

He's had a lot of hits on the chop swings that he does (those wont keep up year by year). I haven't been impressed for the amount they signed him for.

He's tied for 5th on WAR with Duval who has played 48 games less.

He's also 30 so if anything he will get worse as his contract ages.

I don't care what he is being paid or that he's a one-tool player. Teams need guys that can hit, and if Yoshida is Top Five in batting average (like he's been all season, in his first year in the AL), that can only help make an offense better.

Masa is not a superstar or MVP type, but there will always be a place in a batting order for someone like a Luis Arraez.

They said that about Ichiro Suzuki, too.

Except Ichiro was good defensively when he came over, a speed demon and literally an MVP. Yoshida isn’t even remotely close to Ichiro. Ichiro was one of best hitters the game has ever seen

Agree that Yoshida is not close to the ball player that Ichiro was. Masa may have more power, but that’s about it.
