@redsoxpayroll

With Hosmer signing in Chicago, Barnes' $9.38MM AAV is now Boston's only dead $ for `23.

2022 ~$20MM (Price, JBJ)

2021 ~$30.3MM (Price, Pedey,

2020 ~$2.5MM (Worman/Hembree, Lucroy)

2019 ~$24.5MM (Pablo, Thornburg, Nunez)

2018 ~$33.6MM (Hanley, Pablo)

2017 ~$18.5MM (Pablo)

No Sale "dead money?"

No Paxton in '22?

No ERod in '20?

Sure, if we count Story's 23.3 as "live $" for '23...

Plus, why is JBJ there for '22 and at what $ amount?

They put approximately 20M, so I can't tell you what amount they were assuming. About 4M?

I think "dead" money is for guys not actively on the roster. Pedroia's contract was effectively dead money from 18-21.

Yes, whoever did that list was on mushrooms or something.

Sale isn't "dead money" as he is still an active player for the Red Sox per se. Dead money by their definition would be players no longer in the organization.

If you go to somewhere like spotrac, they differentiate these between "Injured List" and "Retained Salaries" which the dead money would only be for the retained salary bucket noted as leftover salaries from players who have been traded or released, or buyouts for declined options.

How is Pablo's full salary on the list for 2017, then?

I get the distinction, and you have to have criteria for this type of thing.

Do they have a seperate list for lost salary for injuries lasting a whole season or 90%+ of one?

Honestly, I was more focused on the Barnes part of the tweet... Jesus...

@BeyondtheMnstr

Rays extend former Red Sox lefty Jeffrey Springs to a four-year, $31 million deal. It could be worth a total of $65.75 million if his 2027 option is exercised

@ChrisCotillo

Red Sox are still considering catching additions and are in talks with free agent Roberto Perez, a source says. Perez was limited to 21 games in PIT last year after 8 years in Cleveland.

Sox have Reese McGuire, Connor Wong, Jorge Alfaro in the mix already.

Perez seems to be a good defensive first catcher. Probably the ideal 3rd catcher on the depth chart. Good pop times and framing.

@AdamMcCalvy

The Brewers have signed righty Robert Stock to a Minor League contract with an invitation to big-league camp. He pitched in South Korea last year after appearing in the Majors for the Padres, Red Sox, Cubs and Mets from 2018-21.

The only good 2020 reliever.

Should that have been in green?

Phillips Valdez and Weber did fine from the pen.

Stock was good. Sorry that you have an unending love for two losers like Weber and Valdez.

Arguing over which middle reliever was the best from the 2020 Sox bullpen is like arguing over which venereal disease is the most fun…

No love. Slightly better than crap can still be pretty smelly.

We were also talking pen work:

Weber:

7.11 SP (1.056 OPSA)

2.25 RP (.583)

His pen sample size was about twice the size of Stock's.

I mean, we're at that point in the offseason.

I told myself I wasn't going to participate in the list of Bloom's Worst Moves, but if 2020 was an entire season, that whole first year might have its own Bottom 20.

Still some minor itching (but not burning) points for 2023.

Just one LHRP? Last off-season, Bloom was all about LHRPs.

Does Jarren Duran have a future in Boston? Does his speed make him tradable? Is he worth the 40 man roster spot?

Is catcher depth set?

Who gets bumped up when Story hits the 60 day? Early candidates include Tapia (best option for 4th OF), Goodrum (with Mondesi out, MI depth is needed), or Alfaro (need help at catcher).

Matt Moore is reportedly on the radar.

I think 2022 was worse than 2020. The results in 2020 were horrific, BUT I don't think he anticipated Sale AND ERod missing the whole year. Once the pandemic hit, there was no real point in trying to compete anyway.

They are looking at Perez for C and Moore for LHP. Maybe finding another scrap heap MIFer?

When you are forced to cut $60M from a team that barely reached .500 the previous year, I'm not sure about how much expectations should be factored into results.

People wonder why he signs so many players with injury histories- well, they cost much less.

Which was basically the same roster from the year prior where they won like 120 games including the playoffs...
