Over 2020-2022, Devers's SLG has gone up markedly while Soto's has gone down markedly.

2020 was a 60 game season. A lot of players had inflated or deflated stats. His 2021-2022 ISO is basically the same, so his drop in SLG is based on fewer singles.

He’s hitting fewer line drives, but in that lineup he’s being pitched around…

Soto has zero lineup protection. Devers is still hitting 2nd in front of JD/Bogey.

Indeed. Devers holds his own in SLG, but the OBP disparity in immense. Also, because Soto walks so much, he has less XBHs, something I find hard to hold against him.

Thinking the Sox need to do some buying.

The following SP are all reportedly available and more desirable than Eovaldi

Luis Castillo

Pablo Lopez

Jose Urquidy

Zac Plesac

Aaron Civale

All are controlled for 2023, a year in which the Sox rotation would look to have:

Chris Sale

James Paxton

Josh Winckowski

Kutter Crawford

???

One ? as of today, and Paxton is not exactly Mr. Durability. And of course, Sale is only averaging 16IP per season on his new contract.

At least one more SP is essential. And locking up Devers and/or Bogaerts will only negatively impact the available cash for a free agent acquisition…

If I'm the Sox, I move Houck back into the rotation. His stuff has not "played up" in the pen.

Next year perhaps. Have to give him a real shot. Looks like this is the year to do it!

Yeah, not this year. I'd worry that jerking him around more this season would lead to injury.

Back to piggy backing for Houck!

No love for Montas?

I'd like to see us sell and buy, this deadline, if it's done right.

Don't trust my math, but I have...

As a starter and piggy back (to May 28):

4.28 ERA

3.60 FIP

.624 OPS Against

As a short inning RP'er (May 29>)

1.90 ERA

3.00 FIP

.638 OPS Against

I still like Whitlock starting over Houck, if one has to do it.

Yes, we know. You don't ask for much. :D

So, trading/dumping 13 players while also making two 3 prospects for 1 controlled players really asking for a lot?

LOL

I have zero doubt that Whitlock will be in the 2023 Opening Day rotation.

The FIP and OPSa shows it's not playing up as much as it should.

They have to decide between one of Houck and Whitlock and go for it full hog this offseason. They can't toe the line the way they did last offseason.

3.60 to 3.00 is significant, but maybe an adjustment period is needed.

He does have a .556 OPSA in his last 10 games, but the FIP jumped to 4.46.

I thought he'd be a lights out closer with the FB/SL combo. It hasn't worked that way. He's been mediocre.

The J.D. Martinez – Dodgers rumor floating around is from their flagship radio station postgame show. It only said that LA "is kicking the tires" on JDM and other right-handed bats.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-2022-replacement-level-killers-catcher/

After dipping to a 77 wRC+ and 0.4 WAR last year, Christian Vázquez has rebounded, hitting .277/.323/.431 (108 wRC+), which in Boston’s spotty lineup makes him a decent choice to fill in at first base on days he’s not catching; he’s made four starts there. No longer a framing star, his defensive work is trending closer to average, and his 1.0 WAR ranks 19th among players who have spent more than 50% of their time as catchers.

The Red Sox’s problem here isn’t Vázquez so much as it is his backups, as Kevin Plawecki and Connor Wong have combined for -0.4 WAR at the position. Nearly all of that is on the former, who in 104 PA has hit .187/.286/.264 (58 wRC+), pretty much canceling out the meager gain from Vázquez filling in for the unproductive tandem of Bobby Dalbec and Franchy Cordero at first. The 26-year-old Wong, who’s made just nine trips to the plate this year, projects to provide more offense (.238/.285/.406 via our Depth Charts) and can play solid defense, a combination that at least merits a longer look.

Amid a 2–11 skid and a 6–17 July, the Red Sox have fallen below .500 (49–50), five games out of the third AL Wild Card spot but still with a 22% chance of making the playoffs. Their slide makes it increasingly likely that they’ll be sellers at the deadline. If they go that route, Vázquez, a pending free agent, would have plenty of potential landing spots, as you can see from this list.

I hadn't really considered a trade of Vaz, but he does have some decent value to teams like the Cardinals, Astros and Mets.

@hgomez27

The Padres would send to the #Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams, left-handed pitchers Mackenzie Gore and Adrian Morejon, as well as outfielders Robert Hassell III (No. 23 MLB prospect), Joshua Mears (No. 8 Padres prospect) ).

Seems like a good haul for Soto. Sox are going nowhere and should sell the expiring deals at least. I'd listen on everyone.

I have no love for Montas. He knows why.

I’m thinking mild selling along side buying for 2023…

May as well. Only an Xtension would help this season right now and I don't think they are going to do one.

I am all for it. The nice thing is that the dude throws tons of strikes.

Tanner Houck, M.D., I am sort of conflicted. I think he has done a good job working around his arm slot split issues - but I am skeptical of him longer term being able to get lefties out consistently enough in the rotation.

I do think at best he’s only the second best of the Closing Tanners.

Regardless of last night, he’s a bullpen arm. If you get someone better to close over him, fine. But he’s not a starter and he is someone I want influencing multiple games per week…

I expected better, but I'd let him go as the closer for the rest of 2022 and then reassess.

You can be sellers and improve the Team

Problem is, at the moment you have a GM who has a terrible trade grade, Borderline incompetent

But let’s get past the Betts AB Renfro trades Barnes and story signings and of course the 2 year void at 1b which has resulted in the Team ranking 28th in 1b defense allowing 25 runs to the opponent but that’s for another discussion

Evoldi JD Hill Dalbec having a good week can restock the farm by acquiring the right prospects

Duran JbJ Houck ? I’d have Story out there as well

Phillies looking for an arm, target the C O”Hoppe

Chaim doing the minimum like he always does and waits for very last minute to study for the test .Ian Happ ? Bell ? Hell Puigs highlight assists are other worldly still in the KBO with plenty of Pop and he’s humbled big time ...Help this team they have gone through Hell this year we all sit and wait for help and it’s just like last year he went out got Kyle and never addressed pitching ....and because of that we likely blew a chance at another World Series .I think Bloom is a coward and waaaaay too scared to run the Boston Redsox .We have No salary cap we have two homegrown players you must retain and yes they could afford Soto and have Papi hit Fungos for 13 mill a year and still print money .Stop thinking like HiMEY Bloom we are not the Carolina Mudcats here .
