JD is not fast but he hustles. That is what I like to see, guys giving full effort.

That’s true.

JD is slow afoot, but not as slow as HOF'r Ernie Lombardi. Ernie was so slow he would often get thrown out at 1st by the right fielder. However, he still finished with a lifetime BA of .306. Edited by SPLENDIDSPLINTER

Story's OPS went up 117 points just tonight

As I said few weeks ago, I still expect 800+ and 25+ HRs from him this season. There’s still a lot of baseball to be played

If Joe West had been a ballplayer and not a chUMPIRE, he would have been Ernie as far as lack of speed was concerned.

The Red Sox record can move ahead of Seattle's record by winning two of the next three games.

Or by winning Friday evening.:(

Remind me what poster said he noticed JD's bat slowing and proclaimed him over the hill?

There were some on here also that wanted JD traded this past off season.

And there are few who have expressed interest in re-signing him.

Tough call for $20M, or so, but he can still swing that bat for a few more years.

I'm not sure he makes more than $18M a year, unless it's a one year deal. He might make $38M/2 with and counting options.

I remember pressing him for evidence, and I believe he said he claimed he could see it on TV.

If bat speed was his problem, he'd be struggling against the heat. He's a +6 run value against 4 seamers according to Statcast. His current runs above average for 4 seamers is 3.22, which happens to be his career high. IDK, if you look at the metrics it just seems like he's a good hitter.

He would be a tough bat to replace. He might not be a 120 RBI man anymore, but he should still get you 80-100.

Because of the players around him.

Many though that Papi’s bat ha don’t slowed during one of his rare prolonged slumps, and he went on to tear up MLB pitching for about 5 more years. Pitchers and defenses had adjusted to Papi, and it took him a while to adjust back — he started going the other way. JD is constantly adjusting to keep ahead of the pitchers and over the last 7 seasons (excluding 2020) his results are up there in an elite class of performers. Edited by a700hitter

Bad Feet got Papi, and not a slowed bat. JD’s feet are fine if he doesn’t trip over 2nd base.

Indeed. The problem might be that bringing him back at any cost will likely be a step down, as he is likely to decline.

"Declining" to .875 is still a huge plus, though- even .825-.875.

I guess it depends on who you can get to replace him, and the cost to something comparable.

Right now Bogey has an OPS of .860, and that equates to an OPS+ of 145.

JD is having a great year so far, but let's not pretend that most of us didn't cringe the past few seasons when he swung and missed repeatedly at sliders down and away. Either he has made the proper adjustments to lay off that pitch or he has crept closer to the plate and is going oppo more (it's likely both).

But it's ok for those who recall him getting beat on fastballs once in awhile, because even the best hitters are caught looking occasionally for an offspeed pitch -- when that's The Book on them.

Except Rafey... when he misses a heater, it's usually from pulling his head trying to hit it 1,000 feet instead of just 500.
