If he hits the open market, 10-300 will be a starting point

I won't disagree, but I think we can get him to sign for $275/10 or maybe $300/11 or 12.

I suspected there might be an exception.

Bryce Harper: -4.8 dWAR career

Giancarlo Stanton: -2.2 dWAR career

50% of the 300M contracts were bad to medicore defenders.

Interestingly, Harper and Stanton got almost identical contracts. 13 years @ $25 mill. moon's kind of contract...keep that AAV down!

@ChrisCotillo

Sam Kennedy says Red Sox are actively engaged with Rafael Devers. Also says the club had conversations with Jose Abreu.

Is not saying anything about ongoing discussions with Bogey pretty much confirming talks have ended between the two?

I would place my bet on that, yes.

What's the difference between "still engaged" and "actively engaged"?

Probably a sliding scale like this:

1) Intensely

2) Actively

3) Still

4) Haven't ruled anything out

Still engaged: pre-nup's not yet signed by both.

Actively engaged: pretending the groom has any say in the shades of blue or magenta for the baby's room.

Probably like the kind of talks of offering Mookie $300M when they knew he wasn’t going to take it.

Devers has not also had seasons like the above.

No, Devers never had Harper's 9.3 fWAR in 2015, but he's matched all of his other seasons.

Stanton through age 25 21.5 fWAR.

Devers through age 25 18.1 fWAR, which would be much closer to Stanton's number if 2020 was a full season.

Stanton got his deal from his Monster season. Just like Harper. Devers has not had a monster season like them. That's the difference.

Stanton's Monster season? Devers had the same fWAR that Stanton had prior his deal.

Harper had one big year, then 3 decent, but not great years before his deal. Giving out a 300M deal because a guy had a 9 fWAR season 4 years earlier doesn't make sense to me.

They both won an MVP, something Devers has never sniffed

If Harper, Stanton didn't have those MVP seasons they wouldn't of gotten the deal they got. You can add Betts to that list. If he had an avg season instead of his MVP season he wouldn't of gotten a 300 Mil contract. When you win MVP it ads significant value when it comes to contract talks

So it's the MVP award, not the overall numbers?

This is fair, but Mookie has always been one of baseball's most valuable players; he got MVP votes in 5 straight years in Boston, 4 in the Top 10, with a 2nd place a few seasons before he won. In the NL so far, he finished 2nd in 2020 and 5th last year.

Gotta wonder how much Jose Ramirez could have gotten if he didn't choose to take a team-friendly to stay in Cleveland. He's also had 5 Top 6 MVP years in the past six seasons: 3-3-0-2-6-4

Correct. If Devers goes out this year and pumps out a ridiculous season and is in MVP talks. He will get 350 Mil easily. If he does the same as this past season he's hurting his value in my opinion.

When Harper and Stanton had those seasons the GMs were obviously seeing their ceiling but figured they would be close to these numbers. When we look at Devers now, if what we're seeing is his ceiling, a 300 Mil contract would be terrible

Yeah he could of gotten a Monster deal IMO. The dude is consistent season over season

Disagree. Devers had more extra base hits at age 22 than anyone in MLB history except Joe DiMaggio.

He needs to be signed this winter or he's gone. I heard on MLB radio that in the past dozen years, only one free agent "star" has re-signed with his own team: Cespides in 2016. The last guy before that was Matt Holliday in '09 (Stanton's mega was an extension).
