I have to agree. Mookie was the star of that Dombrowski run, and Dave was smart enough to make extending him through his prime the priority.

Until it wasn't.

You can blame him for the return.

Sure, but even there, no one knows if he could have done better.

We know there wouldn't have been many teams willing to take one year of Mookie and paying him $27 mill.

Bloom got Verdugo, Downs, Wong and $72 million in payroll relief.

Dombrowski signed Sale when they couldn't sign Betts at the price they wanted.

That makes 1000% more sense.

Yes.

But once that money was committed to Sale, there was no chance of re-opening negotiations with Betts…

I'm agreeing with this, too. Dombro was moving on when he noted, "Hey -- we can't sign them all."

One reported offer:

Padres

The team plans to send Wil Myers plus two young major leaguers and one prospect in a potential deal for the All-Star. The options at the major league level include one outfielder between Manuel Margot and Josh Naylor and one starting pitcher between Cal Quantrill and Joey Lucchesi.

Or what about just the Dodgers offer:

Betts/Price for Verdugo/Graterol

Is Graterol a better haul than Wong/Downs?

Is that a fair criticism?

It may very well be a fair criticism. But since Graterol has a career fWAR of 1.6 and 2023 is his first arb year, we're talking about pretty small potatoes.

If the discussion is limited to only known deals, we can only talk about the potatoes we are aware of.

Yes, totally fair, but is the differential large enough to slam Bloom for "not doing better?" (Not that you did, but others do repeatedly.)

Downs who can’t hit 200 in two years in AAA, and Wong nothing more than a backup at best we’re nothing more than instant potatoes, and not close to a russet.

In theory, we might have gotten Maeda instead of Downs/Wong, and he did pretty good for a year or two, after he was traded.

I just don't think the argument that "he could have done better" is all that significant. We might have done slightly better, and who knows what Wong and to a lesser extent, Downs have left in them?

Agree, and always has been. I still say DD could have done better, but we will never know.

Okay, how about he did "about the best we could expect?"

“Baseball. If there's a more beautiful word in the English language. I have yet to hear it....baseball has served as such a powerful link between Dad and me, and later between me and my son.”

He loved baseball, but I don't know how long he played.

I expected more. Is that the best a Yalie can do?

I believe that’s the best this Yalie can do. The Beni trade was another that could have been better.

Do you remember DD's trades for Tyler Thornberg and Carson Smith when he was with us?

Nobody's perfect.

I do remember, and that pales in comparison to the Sale extension. Theo made some blunders too.

The Beni trade freed up about $3M, which was what we got your guy, Renfroe for.

Every GM makes bad deals. Show me a GM who’s never made a bad trade or authored a bad contract, and I’ll show you a GM who isn’t active enough…

But Bloom is in charge now, and DD didn’t have any losing last place in the Div finishes on his resume, and plus he has a ring to show for his tenure. Bloom has a wring around the tub.

Nothing a little Ajax can't take care of.

They acquired Renfroe before Beni was traded. Sox cleared up 4M, but still paid him 3 to play elsewhere. His total contract was 7.

Just because one happened before the other, doesn't mean it wasn't planned.

I'm not talking about the horrific trade, but it seems it is overlooked that Bloom signed Renfroe to begin with, and I do think the money saved in the Beni trade allowed for the signing. (I guess one could argue we signed Marwin with the money, too, but the budget was tight that winter and Bloom had over a dozen slots to fill.

If the budget was so tight, why'd they even eat 3M of Beni's salary?

Ask them. (KC probably demanded it, and no other team offered better.)

You think Bloom left millions on the table?
