So Wander Franco didn’t sign that mega-contract?

You have got to be kidding. Franco's may be a mega contract but only if you are talking about the Ray's. It's chump change for any big market team. The Ray's payroll is about 80 million if I am not mistaken.

It will take a lot more then that deal to keep Bogey or Raffy

It’s still $182mill. While it is spread out over 11 years, it certainly is an example of the Rays locking up a star player…

Given the Ray's track record he won't last that long. In any case Franco will not increase Ray's attendance above their current level.

I have to be careful out here. Those goal posts are moving at dangerous speeds…

The point is the Rays model is not to care about attendance. It believes in low payroll achieved by constant turn over. To suggest that model is sustainable in Boston over the long term.is folly. They may pay one or two players they may have but these do not attract fans to any degree.

I do not know the value of the Rays franchise, but I suspect it is among the least valuable in baseball with the prospects of it increasing in value without a major infusion of capital and a considerable upgrade in payroll plus a new stadium are bleak.

That’s fine but the Tampa North rhetoric left when the Sox signed Story.

Andrew Friedman ran the Rays with a low payroll, too, but no one thinks of the Dodgers as Tampa West…

I believe the signing of Story had more to do with appeasing the fans at the time, and some leverage against Bogey, so no rhetoric has left especially if Bogey, and Raffy aren’t resigned.

Well said that Tampa is not Boston, and what works, or is put up with in Tampa won’t work, or be put up with in Boston, and that includes Bloom, who to lots of Red Sox Nation has worn out his welcome already.

First of all, all of free agency is to appease the fans and send a message that money will not be an obstacle. Do people really think teams are built by overpaying stars in their 30s for what they did in their 20s?

But also, even if that’s the only reason, it’s already outside the Tampa model…

A possum’s tail, and four stomachs don’t make decisions, but rabbit ears can.

Then Henry should have hired Friedman. Never talk to the monkey when organ grinder is in the room.

Maybe he tried, but Friedman liked his nice, cushy LA gig…

No, but sometimes it's the best, or only, option to get better.

Friedman and the Dodgers : 75-33. Best record in MLB. First place , 16 games ahead of a very good Padres team........ Bloom and the Red Sox : 54-56 . Last place , 17 games out . Nuff said.

True, but that sword has two edges. And usually the second one is sharper…

I guess then Henry is stuck with the monkey.

It was an odd analogy to compare the monkey to the protege of the organ grinder…

Bloom is not Andrew Friedman.

Would Friedman be Freidman if told to cut massive salary year one?

Would Bloom be Bloom had he been hired to be the Dodger GM and been given a blank checkbook?

I'd say, "Hard to know."

Friedman joined the Dodgers before the 2015 season, so it was in his sixth season with the team that they won their first title under him.

Yes, and during a 60 game season, at that.

My point was about the differing checkbooks each was handed in their first 3 years.

I know. I just used it as a jumping off point to show that it took him a while to get to the promised land, too.

But Bloom has said several times his goal is to produce sustained contenders. Freidman's Dodgers made it to five LCS and three WS in seven years (in the midst of eight straight first place finishes in LA). Fans in So Cal don't have much to complain about (except maybe when the front office orders line-up or pitching changes... then again, it can argued the front office guys are the reason for so much sustained success).

That's all true.

Personally, I tend to think of Bloom as just another of Henry's agents. What people overlook is that Henry is actually the man who has set the strategic course for this team for the last 20 years. He brought DD in when it was time to capitalize. He brought Bloom in when it was time to get the financial house and farm back in order.

That's it . What they have done is the definition of sustained success . Everyone wants to win the ring , but we all should know that the post season is , at the very least , somewhat of a crapshoot . And it gets more so every year as more teams are added to the mix. That is why we are seeing the scramble for the third wild card now. A mediocre club can certainly get hot/lucky and win it all. But what the Dodgers have done is impressive.
