Adding Hosmer for free, McGuire (2 years remaining), Pham (an option for '23) plus 2 rising prospects for Vaz and DFA worthy Diekman seems like it really helped our longer term outlook without really hurting the 2022 club, overall..

Minus at C

Plus at 1B

Plus in OF

Plus farm

Plus budget in '22 and beyond.

But Bloom is Henry's hand-picked guy, and Henry was obviously keen on converting to a more Rays-like approach, which meant not handing out so many big contracts et cetera.

There's a lot of money available to be spent this offseason. It's going to be very interesting to see what they do. Especially with the unrest in the Nation looking on.

Agreed...JH picked him. But the natives are restless and it appears that even some of the guys on the inside are restless. It will be investing to see how Bloom spends money. He will maybe pull a Cherries....the last guy we had that did not know how to spend a big budget because he was too unfamiliar with the responsibility of a big budget. I never cared how many post season teams Panda had played on for example. Paying that tub-o-lard that kind of money was just asking for it.

Merloni specifically said ownership. Spier who is Henry's employee may simply be using the standard euphemism that reporersts use to not name sources. Merloni not being a Henry employee nor a Globe reporter may feel he does not need to use such a device.

I listened to what Merloni said. Total hearsay.

Henry had a pretty good idea the direction things would go in when he replaced DD with Bloom, one would think.

Yes, but did he expect the amount of blowback from Red Sox Nation? Like I keep repeating that JH has rabbit ears, and I’m sure doesn’t like the amount of scrutiny the Sox are getting along with the NESN ratings, and attendance down.

He only had a "big spending budget" one of his 3 winters, and he's made one big signing that is just 1/7th complete. That guy is still #2 in RBIs, despite missing over 20% of the season with an injury.

I do wonder if Bloom is just a replay of Ben. Hire a guy to build up the roster and farm, and then bring in a guy with experience spending large.

I hope they give him time to let the plan take hold, but they never let Ben finish what he started.

Except when Spier actually quotes Bloom his first paragraph would fit the definition of hearsay. When I last checked this is not a courtroom. Lou Merloni who has excellent sources within the Red Sox said ownership. Spier largely supports what Merloni reported. He certainly did not refute it. Now you can draw your own conclusions. That said the unreputable fact is that the Red Sox exceed the lux tax and will not make the playoffs. The Red Sox could have not made the playoffs and avoided paying the lux tax but Bloom failed to properly plan to achieve that goal. Merloni believe that ownership is confused by that. Now I will purely speculate but I can imagine Henry or Werner or both calling Chaimto their Executive Suite and asking "Please Explain"

When your radio ratings are tanking, you need to find some ways for people to pay attention to you.

He should have, don't you think? He's owned the team for 20 years. He's been through 4 last place finishes prior to this potential one. He knows what the local media and fans are like.

We’ll Bloom has found plenty of ways for fans to pay attention to himself, but I’m sure not the kind he wants.

Maybe he need to make another appearance on Felger, and Mass to set the record straight. I’m sure they would welcome him with open arms, and wouldn’t be as surprised as the first time.

No they just start talking about other sports. It is the Red Sox ratings that are tanking.

You obviously did not read the article. Yes WEEI is 3rd now but last winter it was 7th and Merloni seems to doing better than the rest of their programming

".In afternoon drive (2-6), The Sports Hub’s “Felger & Mazz” program earned a massive 24.6 share to finish first. WEEI’s “Merloni, Fauria, and Mego” finished third (6.0, including 0.1 for the stream). That show added Meghan Ottolini as a full-time host in early May and did see some improvement over its winter ratings (4.2, sixth).

In the winter, The Sports Hub took first (16.3), while WEEI was seventh (4.4). In spring 2021, The Sports Hub was first (15.2), while WEEI was tied for sixth (4.2)."

I remember that broadcast. I think Henry still has not recovered.

I read it. They too rated sports show or no?

Remember the Valentine fiasco pink hats?

Ole Bobby boy was an embarrassment to the bottom line, he gone!

Orlando will follow before the winter meetings, Take it to the bank!

Epstein on speed dial

Get the finances in order cuz when 25 comes, Derby champ says New York or Boston is the preferred destination, bet on it!

Bloom is like Duran playing the OF. The more you see of him the more he is exposed. As some fan in Red Sox Nation said today Bloom may be good at building a 11 yr old Cal Ripken Team to have a bunch of moving parts around the field. Wildcard update. 5 games in the L column behind the O’s, who has actually played better since the trade deadline, and after trading their closer, and Mancini. Sox 3-5. The Sox have been Bloomed, and it’s not a good thing.

Bloom will make it through the 23 season at least.

I don't see Henry doing what he did with Ben, and he gave Ben 3 last place finishes before pulling the plug on his 5+ year plan.

I'm thinking Henry will be more patient with the whole farm-building plan he obviously endorsed when he hired Bloom, in the first place. I think the 2021 "tease team" actually hurt the optics of a slower rebuild, although not many Sox fans have the patience to sit through a 5 year rebuild. The rabid and demanding fanbase forces top brass to play thing "halfway" and sometimes gets in the way of having a quicker turn-around- hence the "mixed messages" and statements about there being a lack of a cohesive plan. IMO, our plan is so multi-faceted, it is, by definition, confusing, contradictory and hard to pinpoint exactly what the top priorities are. In reality, we have opposing and conflicting priorities than make rebuilding complicated and jerky.

This was exactly my take last offseason and I got skewered for it. It would have been better for the sox overall health if 2021 was a down year with a high draft pick

You were skewed, but I know I have said similar things over the past year, but not so much about securing higher draft picks, but for building up fan expectations to a point where it interferes with making trades to better the long term outlokk.

Yes it is always bad to give customers what they want. The ignorant peasants do not know what is good for them.

That's the most sense you've ever made. (LOL!)

When you have impatient customers, give them cheap, shiny products that fall apart in a couple years. Instant gratification in the new business plan. How wonderful!

I don't subscribe to it.

As ornery as the fans are now, just imagine if we were looking at 3 straight bummer years in a row.

The fans do count a little. They're paying good money to watch this.

I think you just gave the best description of what Bloom's plan is.
