"Nothing," replied one international scouting director. "Overpay for me ... too rich imo," from another scouting director. A third exec: "I have no idea." A fourth: "Nothing ... I wish they and him luck." A fifth: "We thought he was worth less than half of what they paid." A sixth added, "I have no words."

These are anonymous quotes from international baseball scouts in an ESPN article when asked what they thought about the Sox signing Yoshida for 90 million. Not very encouraging. Sox must think they are smarter than all of them.

Did these same scouts also think Bogaerts should get $280mill for 11 years and Aaron Judge should get a $40mill AAV with his health record?

Are scouts good at judging market value or player talent? I think it's two different issues at hand. Will his bat play or is his contract worth it. I'm not sure a scouting guy is the best source of what players should be paid.

The point is, the Sox are taking a huge gamble on a Japanese player with big money. He hasn't played at major league level. It may work out or it may be a disaster for Chaim. If it doesn't work out it will probably be the straw that broke the camel's back for him.

No, if Yoshida has a monster season and the Sox go 80-82, Bloom is still let go.

The point is also the Padres are taking a huge gamble on a player that may not be a SS in 2 years, and paid him way more than Yoshida for double the years.

So, if Yoshida sucks and Bogey falls off a cliff, the back stays broken?

I think Yoshida's contract is less risky than Rusney's.

These guys are international scouts. What is the relevance of Bogaerts and Judge?

Yup.

I am so pissed at Henry/Werner right now. They have to go. Sell boys sell.

I'll always be grateful for the titles, but they have become buffoons.

There plan is to just find value plays wherever they can the way Henry made his money back in the day. Right now in MLB, that doesn't mean let your guys walk off into FA and keep your fingers crossed that you'll find good players leftover when everyone else has finished their feeding frenzy.

They need to spend big money on the right guys. I think the Mookie LA deal is a fair deal. I think Xander should have been given more money last go around so that the opt outs didn't exist OR he should have been extended prior to last season. I think Raffy should be extended prior to Spring Training or should be traded. Figure out which players are worth keeping around long term and extend them before they hit their ARB years. Keep extending them before they hit FA.

What the hell are they going to do about Devers now? Go through the same charade as they did with Bogaerts?

Trade Devers for prospects and kick the can down the road a couple more years?

Posted
The Sox are going nowhere without an ace starter and zero run production from the now missing heart of the order. There are no bounce-back candidates who will suddenly find out how to hit .300 with 30 homers again. Devers is the only one, if he's not traded.

If Bloom for some out-of-character reason (ownership) suddenly signs Rodon and Correa, trades for Murphy or Reynolds and extends Devers, then Kike's club will be better... because, after all, they finally have a bullpen.

I doubt it happens, but...

Story hit over 35, twice.

Bobby Dee's career Hrs per 650 is over 30 HRs.

Both are RHB's.

We need another big bat. I agree. We may also need 3-4 bounce backs out 6 I listed.

Most likely. I'm not even sure massive injuries will be a big enough excuse.

Option 1: Same as 2022. Do nothing. "We're going to compete." He ends up hitting FA.

Option 2: Extend prior to the season. Seems unlikely since they haven't shown the willingness under Bloom to do a monster deal.

Option 3: Trade Raffy. Reminiscent of the Betts deal, but hopefully the players that come back provide better value.

In order of likelihood: 1>3>2

BINGO! 100%.

Even I have nothing to add.

That the economics of the game a aren’t what they were 12 months ago. What do you think Story would get on today’s market?

I do wonder about the impact of simply spending so much even while winning. Is the priority winning or operating in the black?

$200/8, even after an "off year."

They are all operating in the black. That's not even up for debate. None of these teams are losing money.

The Braves have public financials and reported $400M solely in baseball revenue through Q3.

You have to wonder if Henry is content with 4 rings, and it's all about money and trying not to have the team look embarrassingly bad.

I've been thinking we were just cycling to the next strong push to glory, and we may still get there.

If you look at the strong prospects about to be called up in 1-2 years plus Casas & Bello, maybe JH is just planning to "pounce" in 2024 or 2025- with or without Devers.

Then maybe “further in the black” and showing massive profits…

True, they're not really adjusting for mega-inflation.

I think JH has lost it, I really do.

Didn't he say something about learning from the mistakes they made with Lester?

What a joke that turns out to be.

One quote said "I have no idea." Another, "nothing." It doesn't sound like "all of them."

All of the international scouts quoted in the article had nothing good to say about the signing. Read the article, genius.

There are a few less discouraging comments buried in that piece, FWIW.

Blooms huge mistake was not trading Bogaerts, J.D., Nate and Wacha at the deadline. He could have got something for all of those guys. He listened to the fans who wanted the Sox to go for the playoffs. As a very smart coach once said, "If you listen to the fans, pretty soon you will be up there with them."

Yes, I know. Just tired of the Texas genius thinking he is so much smarter than anyone else.

They were only 3 games out, so I understand why.

IMHO the real problem now is crystal clear - it's Johnny Lowball and Tommy Tightwad.
