Swanson fWAR since age 25:

19 2.0

20 2.3

21 3.4

22 6.4

Bogey (1 year older)

19 5.9

20 1.6

21 4.4

22 6.1

Swanson has had one great season, but was nothing special before then. To expect him to do that year in and year out going forward is wishful thinking. Good for him that he did that in his contract year.

Steamer 23:

Bogey 4.5

Swanson 3.2

I don't disagree, but nothing special before?

20-21:

6.0 Bogey

5.7 Swanson

Nothing "special" for Bogey in the two previous seasons, either, then.

Exactly what I said. (From 2019-2023: Bogey 133 OPS+ to 103 for Swanson.)

And yet Swanson's contract is going to be too high for what his actual value will be going forward. I just don't see it with him.

2020 is a throwaway year.

Prior to 2022:

Bogaerts fWAR 28.1

Swanson fWAR 9.8

Yeah, Swanson was nothing special prior to 2022. I'll stick with that assessment.

I was agreeing with you not disputing with what you said. Not every quote has to be a disagreement!

I don't see it happening with any of the other top SS options. If you pay big bucks to anyone besides Bogaerts, it means calling him the priority was disingenuous.

Otherwise, pony up and make him stay.

According to Pete Abraham, it was and the fans were being lied to. We'll have to see where the chips fall.

I think the Sox have a tendency to do too much PR and it ends up making them look foolish in the end.

It’s only being lied to if you buy into it. I think the Red Sox showed their true intentions with Bogey with their offer last offseason, so for myself I haven’t bought into any of the lip service from Sam Kennedy, or Bloom this time around. It’s like the old actions speak louder than words.

If the Sox can’t get Bogaerts back or move on to Correa, Elvis Andrus is probably a much wiser move than Swanson, all things considered…

No, that's not how lying works.

Ok I know how lying works, but I just don’t buy into it. If it all is one big lie, and I believe it is then the Red Sox are playing fans for fools, and I don’t know what would be worse believing the fans would buy it, or the fans that actually did.

If you want to stay last place in the Div yes!

They all will be "too high." Swanson's will be lower (and maybe shorter) than the big 3, and if the savings from him allows us to go big elsewhere, it might be worth it.

It would depend on where the rest of the money was spent.

Andrus 35.1 fWAR, 3.5 last season and will be MUCH cheaper than Swanson.

Steamer projects 1.9 fWAR at 10M. He'll give you SURPLUS value. Considering how much Swanson could cost, he may give you negative value in 2023.

I don’t want Swanson either, and like I keep saying the Red Sox are not going to outbid any teams for any impact player.

Exactly. You can't just look at one move in a vacuum.

I seriously doubt Bloom is going to "leave much money on the table," so what he doesn't spend in one area, he can spend more in others.

Lets wait for the totality of his moves to make a final judgement. I'm not saying each move cannot be judged separately, but to me, we need to see how he spends the whole budget to give a final grade.

Then, the hindsight grade will be how his legacy is set.

Yes, you keep saying that. We get your opinion.

I disagree, as we spent on Story, when we had more slots to fill and less money to spend than this winter. (Just my opinion, and yes, I've repeated that often, too. )

I still believe the Story signing last year f***ed this team for this year to retain Bogey. They should have just reworked Bogeys deal then. I get the whole insurance piece but that was a slap in the face for Bogey. And now it will cost the Sox more to retain him.

The 1 yr contract ext they offered Bogey last year was the real slap in the face, and this is when this all should have been all worked out if the Red Sox were really serious. I wonder if Bloom made the offer with a straight face. My guess is yes.

It wasn't Story's deal, but their inability to extend Xander prior to the season. I think they still wanted to stay under the lux tax cap, but oops'd it. They should have just paid Xander and went over. He probably would have signed some sort of 6/165 at that point.
