The Sox could have gotten MLB players Wil Myers, Joey Lucchesi and Manny Margot plus one prospect for Betts. I suppose it might be better than what they got, but that’s basically a bunch of mediocrity with little hope for improvement.

Plus - and I might be wrong - San Diego was no so keen on taking back Price, which sort of ruined the entire point of the deal…

That's how I remembered it. The SDP offer was for only Betts.

The thing is, it seems to me, people expected us to get a younger Mookie Betts for 1 year of Betts.

At the time, I thought Dugo was going to turn out better than he has. He was 23 and had a decent .784 OPS playing in a big park w 44 XBHs in 443 ABs. He started out nicely, hitting .844 in 2020, but that was a short season. His total OPS with the Sox is actually worse (.771) than with LAD.

Had we stuck with Graterol or maybe taken Maeda, maybe it wouldn't look so bad, now, to some.

The story I got was Will Myers’s then either Margot, or Naylor, and either Quantrill, or Lucchesi, but also a hangup was paying for Myers’s contract, and how much. I don’t think SD wanted Price at all.

This means not on IL or other teams?

Correct.

JBJ is playing for Toronto, but his 17.5 mil is still considered retained for this year.

The same goes for Price's 16 mil.

The Dodgers' active adj. payroll is 206 mil. The Yankems' active adj. payroll is 183 mil.

$117M is a lot lower than I would have guessed.

That's what it is until EO returns. Btw, MOON, regarding JBJ; right now he's getting an adjusted league minimum from Toronto. If he re-signs with the Jays next season, will he again receive the league minimum from the Jays(700,000) and the SOX pay the 12 mil?

This really shows how much at least one GM viewed Price's future and lack of value.

Including half his salary was a big part of the Dodger trade and the reduction of return value, IMO.

I'm not sure the Sox would have taken the SDP deal, unless they took the full Price contract, since Myer's was getting paid a lot, and the Sox wanted to not just reset, but also cut spending by a lot.

That's a tough one, because the Sox have to pay an $8M buyout or the full boat. So, if when they buy him out, he's a FA with $8M in his pocket + whatever he gets from his new team & contract..

Anyone who expected that is just not realistic at all. Imagine the outrage if we have up Marcelo Mayer for a rental this year? Sure no one is untradeable, but there’s a difference between trading for a shortened season of Betts and 2 years of Betts, or even 3. It would be like trading Devers this off-season, we wouldn’t get as sweet of a package as we’d have received if we traded him this offseason. It takes two to tango and the other team knows what they’re trading for.

Thanks. Also,am I correct that this is the last year the SOX have to pay half of Price's salary?

Easy to understand why JH is getting gun-shy of large long-term contracts. Between Price and Sale; what a dumpster fire.

Last places are a drag, no doubt. But if we were all asked back in let's say 2000 would you accept 5 last place finishes and 4 championships in the next 22 years?

I'm pretty sure the vast majority would say yes, let that happen.

I would be in the minority I guess. I far prefer to be competitive every year which means with the current playoff format you always have a chance. the Dave Kingman approach of either a clout or an out never made it for me.

Yes, done with Price. Already done with Pedey.

Sale looks like the only possible/likely "dead money," unless you think Story will be a bust.

Well, some might say bernes, too.

The only locked deals are (Lux Tax Dollars):

25.6 x 2 Sale

23.3 x 5 Story

9.38 x 1 Barnes

4.56 x 4 Whitlock

I think the Sox plan is to cycle your best chances every few years while trying to stay somewhat competitive, in between. It didn't work in 2022. I think they punted on 2020. 2012, 2014 & 2015 are like 2022: not planned on sucking, but in a rebuild mode without making the fans think they were.

Price, Sale, and the unholy trio of Pablo, Hanley and Castillo.

I'm not, but they were able to escape that one.

Maybe not getting as much for Betts from the Dodgers was the SOX way of thanking them for taking Crawful and A-gone.

And also Josh Beckett.

I think we were dealing with stupid Dodgers people the first time, and smart Dodgers people the second time.

It was still a nice thing for them to do.

How much is 60 games from an all star really worth? The Sox most certainly got the best deal they could from a guy who had given every indication he was going to FA.

True. And Dugo hasn't exactly been a 'bust' for the SOX. BA of .290 since he's been here.

No question the 7 year contracts were, too be kind, disappointing. Nice job with that chart, MOON.

The 6's were a little better, but if you combine the 6's & 7's, we can safely say our "large and long" deals have been an overall failure.

I can see why people didn't want us to sign Betts to 12 year, Bogey for 6-7 year, and now Devers to 8+ yrs.
