They're 11.4 million over the first tax threshold for 2022 right now.

They are for this season. They reset in 2020 and didn't go over in 2021.

It feels like they could have taken on more this offseason.

They had a good enough roster to "compete" in 2021, but I don't think they expected us to win 92 games and go as far as we did. (I'm not a believer in the playoffs are a crapshoot idea.)

I think their number one priority was to plan for 2023-2024, keep the reset in place and see what happens. They gave Cordero and Dalbec (and others) longer looks than most "contending" and spending teams would have done.

Now that spending is back on the table, I think they feel better about 2022, but the main priority is still 2023 and beyond.

I don't expect us to trade good prospects, this deadline, even if we look like a very strong contender. We may pick up a Schwarber type player or maybe better pen help tan Robles/Davis of '21, but I still don't feel like we have gone "all in," yet.

BTW, I have explained my breaking down of competitiveness vs high competitiveness philosophy.

So the plan since Dec 2019 was to just wait for 4 more years and just float?

2018-2019 were the definition of going all in. Henry might not want to even do that again.

Great way to put it, and I agree with both you and John Henry. One Dombrowski in the life of a ball club--or the life of its most successful owner--is enough.

I don’t think any team looks at their A ball prospects and thinks “we can wait to compete when these guys are ready.” At least not more than once…

To be competitive but not highly competitive, yes. That's actually 3 years.

2020, 2021, 2022

2020 was never meant to be even competitive, once Sale & ERod were out.

Fact, or fiction?

2020 was clearly going to be non-competitive. But while 2021 might have been better than expected, it’s not in the same category as 2020…

No, it wasn't but it wasn't meant to be in the highly completive category, either.

A very bad business plan. It worked for the Astros, but doesn't have a long history of being a great policy.

@IanMBrowne

Jake Diekman is kind of intense!

Do you want to be the closer? “I don’t really give two shits.”

Can I quote you on that?

“Yeah, do it, I don’t really care.”

I'm into it. I like that vibe.

What a deke, man.

Get ready for some looong posts!

Dombro says the best anti-tank strategy is to shove all combustible prospects into greased Army socks and stick them onto the treads.

Pearce has been retired for three years, and I'm still glad they traded Espinal, who turned out alright.

I was surprised Sox didn't go after Suzuki for RF. It's only money. We'll see how he does for the Cubs. Our farm has more infielders than outfielders.

I agree on this one for sure. Seemed like a good fit?

He did, but he's maybe a bigger gamble than a known ML player.

I had hoped we signed him. He ended up not making a whole lot of money.

Suzuki's OPS is 1145 higher than JBJ's.

...and?

It is only going up from there.

It is painful to watch Bradley at the plate.

At what point does Hang’em Chaim introduce Bradley to the legendary city of Worcester?

$70 mill = chump change.

I do not like the " ghost runner" rule. It distorts the game. That said , the Yankee reliever did a better job of dealing with it than our guys did.

The ghost runner rule gives the home team a large strategic advantage in extra inning games. When I first heard about the rule, I thought it was the stupidest thing I ever heard of. After watching it in action, my opinion was that it was not as bad as I had initially thought. I do like the added strategy that comes along with it, but I really prefer not to have it. I may be in the minority, but I like those epic 18-inning games now and then.
