Eduardo Rodriguez, former Boston Red Sox starter, leaves Tigers for ‘personal reasons;’ future status now in question

I'm glad we didn't sign him. BUT I HOPE HE'S OKAY. HE WAS THE ONLY THING THAT MADE ME WATCH THE SOX AFTER HE CAME OVER FROM THE ORIOLES.

That year was brutal.

A story that bears watching. Hopefully it's nothing long term.

He saw the recent video of Paul Stanley lip synching to Detroit Rock City and realized he was living a lie. He's probably at home watching Zapruder videos of Mini Kiss right now.

This is where Hang’em Chaim needs to earn his pay!

We swoop in and trade Bradley, brazier and Robles to Detroit for Rodriguez. Detroit eats the rest of Rodriguez’s salary for 2022, and we eat it all after that.

Should get us under the cap for 2022 and relieve the team of some dead weight.

Rodriguez walks away from his professional life ( Detroit doesn't have to pay him), Strasburg goes IL again, Sale never gets off the IL, Barnes makes the A-S team, gets paid and can't pitch effectively again. Signing a pitcher to a big time deal is a very risky proposition.

I know Detroit can cause anyone to become manic, but do you really think it's the city that is the root cause of ERod's issues?

Nobody actually believes Detroit is the reason that ERod is sitting out right now.

Just wondering why someone thought trading for him would change his condition

Since it is unlikely that anyone posting on a baseball forum would have any direct contact with ERod to know with any degree of reliability whether his physical environment ie ,playing location, is a contributing factor to whatever is affecting him. That being said it is a well documented fact that physical environment can play a significant role in adversally affecting an individuals emotional health. A fact of life that most individuals who have jobs that require moving frequently kow all too well. Some people can thrive in new environments, others do not. In my experience I was surprised by those who adjusted well and by those who did not.

Hence the Mets’ patience with deGrom…

Supposedly he’s got some marital issues. So it is possible she hates Detroit…

When a player is traded or changes location , you can't be sure what will happen. Sometimes they do better , sometimes the same , sometimes worse . These guys are human , with human emotions . I would think it would be something pretty serious for a guy to walk away from a very lucrative contract .

Just having a little fun!

Winckowski starts today, Wed, June 15. He was shelled by the Orioles in late May, and the write-ups say he has yet to master his delivery in a way that makes his fastball, slider, changeup, and splitter effective.

I have not heard this before. I've just heard that he has average stuff, but no wipeout pitches that he can dominate with. Needs to rely mostly on location.

soxprospects.com has this to say about Winckowski:

https://www.soxprospects.com/players/winckowski-josh.htm

Potential multi-inning bridge relief arm. Ceiling of a back-end starting pitcher. Could be very effective in a bulk role, in which his lack of strikeout potential with his fastball would not be as much of an issue. Slider misses more bats than his changeup at this point, but still does not at a very high level. Margin for error is slim, as he has to rely on commanding his pitches and generating weak contact. To stick as a starter long-term, needs to make strides with his command and improve his slider to the point where it can be counted on as a consistent bat-missing pitch at the major league level. Can effectively tunnel his fastball, sinker, vertical slider and changeup, with all moving in similar ways, but could stand to mix in more of his cutter or a horizontal slider to give hitters a different look. Very competitive. Really thinks about pitching and is always trying to refine his craft.

I thought the press reported that he had trouble gripping the ball.

I thought the press reported that he had trouble gripping the ball.

He stated that the MLB ball is just a little squishier than he is used to and comparing it to the MiLB ball which has more raised seams. This is similar to other things we have heard about this year's ball.

It was also reported that because he could not grip the ball properly, he was just aiming and not throwing.

@tylermilliken_

Interesting nugget about Matt Strahm from @Ken_Rosenthal’s latest piece.

Strahm will be transitioning to a starter after this season as he enters free agency.

126 tOPS+ as SP not good

83 tOPS+ as RP

Even going back to the minors, he's been a guy who has switched between starting and relieving. He's not been good as a starter though. 7 QS in 25 GS.

If you look at his starts, especially in 2018, it looks like a handful were as an opener. So maybe 20 actual starts?

Maybe. His ERA, SLG, WHIP, et al suffer as a SP though. It's not a pretty picture even when you include shorter opener stints.

I do hope if he is starting in 2023, it’s not in Boston…
