@redsoxstats

Crawford with 5 K in his 2 innings. His 1 walk probably should have been called strike 3 as well. He got 6 swing and misses. Very impressive looking outing.

Diekman. Another bad outing today.

I've been watching his outings on the telly, and they've all been ugly. And yet, I know it's only ST, when many pitchers are trying out a new delivery or new grip or new shoes...

... in preseason FLA, stepping on the mound and hitting the first batter and then giving up a longball isn't the same as Matt Clement or Ramiro Mendoza doing it in the playoffs, or Hansel in his first big moment in a Sox pennant race.

For similar reasons, of course, this is why fans shouldn't get too excited about prospects or suspects slamming HRs over palm trees. But we get to get a little excited, because a bomb is still a bomb...

Deikman needs a good six months in Worcester to work on everything!

He is getting lit up like a Christmas tree. I hope he can guys out when it counts.

He hasn't for years. I'm not sure why he got 2 years.

That's a little harsh.

Would have preferred McHugh for a bit more dough, though.

Sounds like Story is batting 6th in his first game today. I don’t know if this will be the regular order to start, but I think if I’m paying someone $140M I’d bat him higher than 6th.

I think I'm being fair. The guy has not been good for a long time, and he gets the rare 2 year deal from Bloom. (Kike & Sawamura)

Diekman has had a WHIP above 1.31 since in 4 of 5 seasons since 2016. His only season below was the short 2020 season.

It's at 1.361 overall the last 5 years. His FIP is a decent 3.84, but that BB/9 is a killer (5.5). The 12.0 K rate is very nice, but when you walk 6 for every 12 you K, I'm not impressed.

He has a 2.3 bWAR in the last 5 seasons, which is less than 0.5 per season. His fWAR is 2.0 or 0.4 per season.

Fair is fair.

You're right, the two-year contract was strange -- unless the front office saw something that this guy has figured out. Unfortunately, no one has seen it in FLA... not once. But like I said, we'll have to wait and see when the bell rings.

His numbers are not that far off of Barnes, who has a career WHIP of 1.33.

It was saying he can't get anybody out that was harsh, not the 2 years part.

With a 5.5 BB/9 rate over the last 5, I don't think it was all that hyperbolic.

A .661 OPSa for his career.

As you said elsewhere, an OPS under .670 is not good...

He was good from 2012 to 2016 and in the short 2020 season. My point was about only his last 5 years.

I'm not sure how to find his OPS against for just that time period.

He hardly played in '17.

.717 in '18

.668 in '19

.410 in '20 (just 84 PAs against)

.715 in '21

Those numbers aren't all that bad. He appears to not let up many hits- just BBs.

Maybe, I was a big harsh.

I didn't either. I was more surprised about the elusive 2 year deal than the $4M, and the fact that we added nobody much better.

He'd have been fine as the 7th or 8th guy, but he might be more like 4th or 5th, to start.

Excluding last season, Diekman's Whiff, Brl, xBA and xSLG have been elite. Seems like Bloom is expecting a bounce back. The launch angle and barrel % from last year are kinda concerning though. I'm not sure how great an idea it is to rely on 35 year old relievers.

I guess $4M is not a terrible gamble, and those numbers are encouraging.

In 2020 and 2021, they were clearly trying to stay under the cap. I wonder if they are willing to go over now so much so that a $4M contract to a reliever shouldn't be a big deal.

Then, we could have afforded McHugh at $10M/2 vs $8M/2 for Diekman-- or better yet, BOTH!.

Passing on McHugh at that price was a real disappointment.

If Diekman is worth $8M/2, McHugh should be worth $12-14M/2 or $17M/3.
