Public figures do not have the same protections (even legal protections) for libel and slander as ordinary citizens. So if you want to be a public figure, you really need to grow a thicker skin. Whereas us poor slobs here--you know, we feel REALLY BAD when we listen to some whippersnapper give us moral lectures. It's SOOOOOO hurtful.

Not to mention, is it really all that insulting?

“Worst player ever capable of playing/starting in Major League Baseball for the Red Sox” really might not be that shameful of a dishonor. Just being eligible contains a certain amount of accomplishment. Like coming in last in the Olympics…

Then stop getting so defensive every time someone else expresses one. If some else’s opinion is “You’re wrong,” aren’t they entitled to that?

As long as it works BOTH ways, but I bet you never considered of you being wrong.

Posted
Well, maybe you should think about that the next time you tell us that we're over-valuing a Red Sox player or prospect, which you often do.

In that case you're the one who's saying "they're not that good". And who knows if a relative of that player isn't reading?

Sometimes your moral high ground gets a little too high.

I get proven wrong all the time out here. Proven wrong, not “disagreeable opinion.” I move on…

If saying Rusney Castillo was so wrong, and to you a major crime was committed on here, and it bothered you so much then I never want to be right. Hilarious!

Like no thread ever goes off on tangents.

It seemed like a dumb question. The worst player ever is probably someone we never heard of.

It seemed better to name the worst player in terms of wasting money, failing to meet higher expectations than others or both.

Castillo fit both categories.

We had high expectations of Hanley Rameriz when he came to the Sox to play left field and paid him accordingly. He may have been the worst defe3ensive outfielder the Red Sox ever had and was erratic at the plate. We paid a lot and certainly didn't get a lot in return.

Stats are being provided here too.

And readers are free to reach their own conclusions.

So where's the issue?

In the Barnes extension thread you made it a point to correct anyone who called it "highway robbery". You rendered your opinion. You do stoop to providing opinions sometimes.

I disagree with the choice for a couple reasons.

1. He barely played. Sure he was a waste of money, but not nearly as much of one as some other players, notably Pablo Sandoval. And the Sox have had plenty of players who barely played who were worse. Jose Peraza, for example.

2. Castillo did play elite defense, which really shouldn’t be ignored.

Like I said before he was not my first choice, but someone I just threw out there that hadn’t been mentioned already, so I don’t give a RA if you agree, or not. I don’t need your approval, or want your approval, but you are free to disagree all you want as I am with you. Either way it doesn’t change a thing.

Upon demand only, the rare opinion was "The Red Sox paid full market price. Nothing wrong with that."

The Comparative Stat method you repeatedly employ is solely used to denigrate Sox prospects or escalate Mariners’ prospects. I’ve never once seen it done the opposite way.

I’ve also never seen it work…

"Some overvalue Barnes' small-sample 37-inning turnaround from his forgettable 2020 season."

If "forgettable" isn't a negative opinion, I'm not sure what is.

An opinion that a post is denigrating perhaps reflects the bias of the reader. Or not.

Noted was Jarren Duran's BTV surplus trade value that was nearly four times that of Taylor Trammell:

https://www.talksox.com/forum/threads/18170-Should-Jackie-Bradley-Jr-be-traded?p=1446206&highlight=trammell#post1446206

Borrowing a previous poster's words regarding Duran, signing off with "Perhaps each is destined to be a 'classic 4A ballplayer, a Triple A star.' Or not."

Duran's higher surplus trade value over Cal Raleigh was noted before a closing that "The development of Duran and Raleigh should be interesting to follow":

We all have the option to ignore posts that add nothing to the discussion. Feel free to exercise that right.

Guilty as charged.:(

A rare opinion, but one that has held up well to date.:)

Yes, Barnes probably read your comments and was deeply affected by them. :(

I would like to " sincerely apologize" to the families and friends of all the ham and eggers , jabronis and pencil neck geeks that I may have offended in the past. I meant no harm. I will try to do better. Thank you.

I also feel guilty to families and friends of guys I named, but not to the players, themselves. First, all won World Series rings (Smoltz, Gagne, Morales, Mendoza), so a few boos come with the badge, along with the ultimate cheers and hardware achieved at the pinnacle of their careers. Second, opinions posted on this forum carry the kind of credibility that arguably comes from among the Worst Fanatics Who Never Played for the Red Sox or Any Other Professional Sports Team...

... and if we're not the worst, the best we can say is we're tied for the Best Who Never Made It.

Today this pencil neck geek will brave 40-degree temperatures under sunny skies to witness a college baseball scrimmage between a Division III school and a community college.

Thoughts are with everyone dealing with the nor'easter.

Can I nominate the entire 2020 pitching staff? Matt Hall, Zach Godley, Colton Brewer. So many bums on that team.

Other notable bad Red Sox off the top of my head: Allen Webster, Charlie Zink, Mike Cameron, Bobby Jenks

Maybe we could also have a “Biggest Letdown Prospect” thread. And hear about disappointing players besides Lars Anderson…

Henry Owens?

It's weird. At what point can we no longer talk about a player's performance on here? If JD k's looking, should we all just post "better luck next time"? What ever high horse happened over the weekend needs to be brought behind the barn and shot.

There are certain posters who have apparently been brought up in a self-created culture of grievance, and have been deluded into thinking that a sign of sensitivity and depth of soul is feeling and rooting out 'offense'.

Maybe there should be a special website -- let's call it talksox -- for posters to report anyone with a critical Red Sox theory.

Marc Sullivan..Haywood's kid. I rest my case.

A definite flop. Although he really almost never played. Less than 400 PA total spanning six seasons…
