Worst Pitcher: Jack Billingham 11.10 ERA in 7 games in 1980 after being traded from the Tigers (Remlinger had some bad stats in 2005, but are skewed by him being thrown to the wolves in one relief appearance when the Sox were already getting drubbed, while Billingham got hit around in every appearance)

Worst Hitter: Craig Grebeck who had a 166 OPS in 23 games in 2001 (dishonorable mention to Allen Craig who had a 432 OPS over the course of 2 seasons at an offensive first position)

Worst Human Being: Ugueth Urbina

2nd Worst Human Being: Wil Cordero

Allen Craig is a wonderful candidate, because we actually paid him substantial dough, and his history suggested a bounce-back that never came.

Agree on Urbina! But couldn't Carl Everett get at least an honorable mention?

I didn't know about his post-Sox playing issues. Woof.

Worst lists are sign a society's dehumanizing decay.

Most us would be thrilled to be the worst Red Sox player of all time.

How many of us were be thrilled to be the worst Red Sox player of all time?

The people here? Probably all of us, because it would mean we actually made the major leagues.

Getting back to the list, (which is a lot more amusing to me than grandiose, philosophical and moral speculations about the Decline of the West) the taxpayers of Rhode Island would like to nominate C. Schillung.

Count me in.

I also tried to pick players that stuck around long enough to have decent MLB careers. I avoided cup of coffee guys. No shame in just sucking ass for the Sox at the end or beginning of a lengthy career.

They've wasted far more millions on other nonsense in that state. And the residents of that state have so little shame that they'd vote for Buddy Cianci again if they could.

I admit, I don't think of RI much. In fact, the last time I was there was 35 years ago, when I drove down from Maine in a snowstorm, thinking, of course, I would go straight across the bridge rather than Rte 1. I failed to note that Rte 128 had been renamed '95' until I saw the signs for Providence.

He certainly had "issues" with the Sox, but had an .870 OPS with the Sox.

Did you mean Carl Crawford?

It's strictly for amusement, though. We're not hurting anyone. Not like the players are ever going to know.

I nominate:

Carl Crawford

Pablo Sandoval

Julio Lugo

Hanley Ramirez

Edgar Renteria (basically cost us $40M for 1 year)

Jack Clark

Everett was a jackass, but Julio Valdez was a pedophile…

Next up: Worst Red Sox Scumbags of All Time.

Bad idea.

Someone will inevitably nominate Curt Schilling.

While Schilling can be polarizing and Carrie’s many extremist ideas, at the end of the day all he does is talk a lot. If e want Sox scumbags, let’s nip the political rheotoric in the bud and agree Schilling is not in the same league as spousal abusers and cheaters and plenty of other insufferable players whose laundry made us cheer…

He'd be filed under "biggest Sox dipshit."

You don't buy the "the hooker lied about her age" defense? (I have a feeling we're going to be hearing versions of that defense a lot in the coming weeks or months.)

I can picture Allen Craig , sitting on a sunny beach and saying " I was named as the worst Red Sox player ever by TalkSox. Oh, the shame of it all. Guess I'll have another Tequila ".

He'd try to take a shot of the tequila, but miss. Shame.

Worst contract is not the same as worst player. Next question!

I’m very well aware worst contract is not the same as worst player, but i don’t care if he had been paid $1 he is on the list, and the contract just made it worse.

There is no rule about going off on tangents from original questions.

1.6 WAR in BOS. He was overpaid, but not even the worst guy on his team.

Rusney played on a team that featured horrible Allen Craig and Pablo Sandoval. Deven Marrero was also way worse than Rusney, just didn't really make big money.

If contracts don’t matter, Rusney’s defense - which can be placed among the best outfielders in MLB by some metrics - keep him off this list. And worst contract puts Pablo Sandoval squarely atop this list

The issue with a “worst player” is playing time needs to be a factor. Dwayne Hosey was a really bad player, but he also only had 168 plate appearances over 2 seasons. Jack Lopez didn’t look like much either, but these were AAA or AAAA guys called up for emergencies and shouldn’t have been relied upon.

Someone like Glenn Hoffman (Trevor’s older brother) who posted a.635 OPS (OPS+ 71) in over 2000 PA while providing weak defense needs far greater mention…

Maybe these guys don't qualify, since most were winding it down, but ones that came to mind include Eric Gagne and Ramiro Mendoza, two relievers with 6.75 ERAs in Boston, and Franklin Morales for one postseason game. But none were as bad as John Smoltz: 8 starts, 40 IP, 8.33 ERA...

ps. I'm ignoring pitchers from 2020, because this thread is ostensibly about big leaguers.
