So true. In 2012 he had another injury-plagued season and in 2013 a bonafide, this is the real Ellsbury season with a .781 OPS (his career OPS is .760). Just shows how desperate the Yankees were to replace Cano's bat.

I'm a fan of speed as anyone else, but to me Ellsbury was hurt too much, and when he played, he had one great year and the rest were meh, in terms of how he compared to other Sox batters:

Didn't he have more than 70 stolen bases one year?

I do not see hang’em Chaim being foolish with second contracts, unless they are organizational cornerstones, like bogey and devers!

I think he lets other teams over pay for less than the best or promotes guys from our minor league system that do he can get most of the production back.

Ps: Betts (an organizational cornerstone) was an exception because desperate Dave screwed us up on the luxury tax!

Yeah sure, blame Dave because the billionaire owners didn't want to pay a little more tax.

Just 70, once, but he did lead the league 3 times.

Of course, OPS does not capture SB value, but it also does not capture CS'ing and running into outs, sometimes blunderingly so.

Certainly, his value, especially when he became a plus defender was higher than these OPS charts show, but I still think it's shocking how so many Sox fans would have paid near what the Yanks paid for Jacoby to return.

I think some remember him being a better hitter than he really was- based on one huge season.

The Yankees grossly overpaid and got burned.

Agreed, but some Sox fans were pissed we lost him.

If you have to go to the Yankees, at least get overpaid and drag the team down with your performance. That's a true Red Sox.

If league average is 24%, it's hard to get upset over anything less than 30% or so.

True, and I'm not one to harp on excessive K's, unless they guy is sucking on OPS and or D.

Anybody notice Santana now has more PAs than Cordero had?

I doubt Santana gets called back up after his rehab stint, but who knows?

Cordero might get another look, this time at 1B, soon.

If Arroyo can play an adequate 1B, Cordero stays down all year.

It's always a mistake to pay for the past performance. You have to put a value on what's expected in future. It's not okay to pay for 10 years knowing you are hoping for 5 productive years.

You are conditioned to think there will never be another Betts. Or Trout. Or....

Look at the current crop of young talent. There's few guys I take over Betts, especially at his contract price.

I was thinking about Arroyo on the IL.

I also wondered why they did not use Kike at 1B, since he had about 90 innings there in the past.

They like Kiké at 2b better? Good to give Arroyo some work at 1B regardless?

Sure. It can't hurt, right? The worst thing that might happen would be an injury.

And great young players (like Tatis) get really expensive really fast. There's just no way around it.

Is he more likely to get injured at 1B for some reason?

It was tongue-and-cheek.

No, I don't think he was more likely to get hurt at 1B than 2B, but maybe a tiny bit more than someone with experience there.

Negligible.

There was a former poster who ranted over and over about how Ryan Kalish got injured because he was in PAW and not in BOS. I don't want to go down that slippery slope again.

Not only that, by Arroyo has proven to be solid in the field at 2b.

In any case, with Arroyo almost certain to go to the IL, that looks like Duran stays in CF for now, Hernandez goes to 2b and Dalbec keeps 1b.

Maybe Cordero or Santana platoon with Bobby Dee at 1B.

C'mon. Duran didn't do squat batting 2nd and left the bases empty for Bogaerts and Devers.

I don't see Chaim being foolish with any contracts, even with organizational cornerstones. Will he extend players like Bogaerts and Devers? Yes, but IMO, it will have to be at least a somewhat team friendly deal. I don't think he'll pay full market price.

I am not a fan of the argument that owners should be willing to pay whatever because they can afford to do so.
