Cy Young was a good guess though. Babe Ruth is another when you're not sure.

Lmao!

What a beautiful win!!! Perez to start every game from here on!

Not sure why all this hatred on ERod Max. Obviously he is not oks.

He missed 2020 and had heart and Covid problems man. Give him a break. He pitched very solid in 2018 and 2019.

Said that I do not consider myself Erods fan but sometimes we have to understand the collaterals.

Interesting. Yes, absolutely, he has gone through a lot in the past year plus. He not only had COVID, but it affected his heart, which is downright scary.

But he is getting paid a lot of money--$8M this year, in fact, which is equal to all his previous salaries combined--so we can be sure he and his manager and pitching coach have all agreed that starting 10 games and pitching 52.2 innings (so far this year) was a good idea. Or, if not a good idea, a necessary idea.

But, as a paying fan (via mlb.tv), I'm saying I don't agree. I remember when Jon Lester had his 2006 fight with large cell lymphoma, which included offseason chemotherapy. But I don't recall the announcers or fans ever saying the next year, 2007, "hey, give the guy a break. He stinks tonight or today, but he's going through a tough time, healthwise." Indeed, he helped the Sox win the WS in 2007.

So my point remains: ERod and his manager can decide whatever they want to decide, but as a paying customer I expect to see performance, not excuses.

A great win and a necessary one. This was the third straight solid start by the Sox rotation and probably the best start by any Sox pitcher this season.

Keep it going, moonslav!

I swore it was Cy Young. Apparently I was wrong.

I was thinking Mel Parnell because I once had his baseball card.

That's fine, but you were really laying it on thick with the stuff comparing Perez to E-Rod.

Perez is pitching great right now, but he also came into today with a 4.65 career ERA. E-Rod has been a better pitcher over his career. You're relying on small samples to make your point.

On to Yankee Stadium for a 3 game series: Eovaldi (4.01) vs. King (2.86); ERod (5.64) vs Taillon (5.10); and Richards (3.75) vs. Germain (3.27).

Sox are still 2 back of the Rays and with the 3d best W-L record in the AL after the Rays and White Sox.

Health wise he's just fine. Hell he's touching 95's with his fastball.

The problem I think has been with his command and not executing his changeup. Not sure if he's been throwing much changeup.

He threw over 100 pitches the other day. You don't do that if you're puny.

Hey, you ain't great if you ain't great, which means I really don't care about ERod's glorious past or Perez's ignominious one.

It's 2021, and so far the Sox have outperformed expectations, so I'm inclined to celebrate the guys who have made that possible and not the guys who were good in 2019 when the Sox were 84-78 the year after they won 108 game in the regular season.

Perez's ERA right now is 3.09 after 11 starts and 58.2 innings. ERod's is 5.64 after 10 starts and 52 innings. If ERod turns things around and gets his ERA down to 3.09, I will go ape and praise him to the skies.

Amen. I think command is too often his problem. When his changeup has that small, but sharp break down and to the left, he is a much better pitcher. He has claimed once or twice he has a great cut fastball, but I haven't seen it this year.

That said, lack of command is likely caused by the missed season, but it was a short season (60 games) anyway.

Well, I stayed away from the thread to get a break from some negativity, and maybe that was the mojo we needed... lol.

Nice game.

Perez is officially our #1 or ace or whatever you wanna call your best starter.

Makes me think of all the times I asked myself, “How do other teams get the most out of these average Joe types.”

Now, we are doing it!

Thanks, Bloom!

He's officially the starter who is pitching the best right now. I would leave it at that. His career stats suggest it's going to be very hard for him to maintain this.

Probably. There are cases where a team has found the secret to making a pitcher improve drastically. Maybe, for once, we are that team.

Maybe he's really liking the seams on this year's baseballs.

BTW, I just read that MLB is gearing up for a serious crackdown on sticky substances being used by pitchers.

Yes, I agree about Bloom. He seems like a pitching savant.

I've been so busy with my move the last few days that I haven't spent any time in the game threads. I must say it made the losses 1000x better to handle. I never felt overly concerned. I knew we would snap out of it at some point. I'm sure some here thought the world was ending and our season was over.

Perez's career stats, to be kind, have not been very good. He's now 30 years old and some pitchers have been known to figure out their game later in their career. Let's hope such is the case for Mr Perez.

I remember Houston helping Charlie Morton find a new approach at something like 32-33 years old. He wasn’t bad before but I’m hoping this turns into something like that.

Perez did have one of his best WHIP seasons, last year.

Maybe with Pivetta, too.

Joe C and Merloni spent a long time talking about that this afternoon.

This is an area where 'unwritten Old School' rules or code might work ... but it won't! I have no idea how they are going to police this, except perhaps with random testing and such severe penalties, players will simply stop doing it ... (or not.)
