@alexspeier

Impressive, impressive hands from Nick Yorke (Red Sox 2020 1st-rounder) against Braves LHP A.J. Minter. Yorke actually looked like his legs flinched a bit on a Minter slider with two strikes, but still pulled his hands inside the ball to drop a single to RF.

Worth noting that last year, after he got to the Alt Site, the 18-year-old Yorke said he'd never really seen 90 mph velo. He took a good mid-count swing (for a foul ball) against a Minter fastball, then hung in for the single.

The Sox went away from industry consensus in taking Yorke in the first round. They are absolutely convinced he's got special hitting ability. It'll take years to assess whether they're right, but his first glimpses (last year at Alt Site, now in ST) have impressed.

Good news today: Yorke can hit! Puello with a run saving catch. Dalbec got a hit on a pitch I did not think he could handle.

Bad news; Richards looks like the kind of pitcher who should have been on our team last year. Also, we had as many errors as hits today!

Maybe cut Richards a little slack?

So Richards calls for the Mercy Rule to end Inning #1?? cool! As long as the Sox can do this all season, they should be fine.

Hard to get worked up over these performances either way. If he looks like this at the end of March, maybe there'll be a problem.

Have we really invoked the mercy rule 4 times in 2 games? Holy s*** LOL

Once a pitcher throws 20 pitches, they can end the inning. It's fine since this is really just practice. These games are meaningless.

@PeteAbe

#RedSox pitching plans today are Martin Perez for two innings followed by RHP Garrett Whitlock, RHP Joel Payamps, RHP Ryan Weber, RHP Josh Winckowski, and RHP Andrew Politi

Whitlock is the Rule V guy. See Payamps before he's DFA'd again! Winckowski will be the first asset to watch from the Beni deal. Politi has been a guy many people online are pushing this offseason.

But not being able to get through an inning of a ST game against what is often a pick-up line-up? That doesn't strike me as meaningless. Maybe they should adopt the "over the fence is out" rule as well.

@ChrisCotillo

If you are someone who thinks these spring training games mean anything, please refer to how Brett Phillips and Randy Arozarena are each wearing an AirPod in the outfield and having a dance-off between pitches.

Also

@PeteAbe

Six up and six down for Martin Perez (helped by a double play) on 16 pitches.

And Yairo Munoz homers to give the Sox a 2-0 lead. Clearly it's all coming together.

@IanCundall

Impressive 1-2-3 inning from Red Sox RHP Garrett Whitlock. Has an ideal pitchers frame and gets really good extension to the plate. FB sat 96-97 per

@PeteAbe

. Snapped off a good breaker and threw some quality strikes. He's one I'm going to be tracking closely this Spring.

@SoxProspects

Whitlock returns for the 4th inning after a long wait. Works around a double and strikes out postseason masher Randy Arozarena swinging before getting top MLB prospect Wander Franco to ground out to third. Solid Grapefruit League debut for the tall righty.

Thanks for these updates.

It's still very early, but it's better to see more good things going on than bad ones.

Good news today: Hernandez is starting to grow on some Red Sox fans.

(I hope Duran gets a chance to play in Boston this year.)

Whitlock- I did not expect much from him, but I liked his stuff today.

Bad news today: most of these pitchers are so scary!

Plus12 million dollars.

Holt cost $5.8Mover his last 2 arb years, so about $8M more, but nice try.

(As a FA, Holt signed for $3.25M/1 for the Brewers after leaving the Sox.)

I thought you said these games were meaningless. ????

Holt is on a minor league deal with the Rangers for $1.75 million if he makes the big club.

What was I trying?

Holt deserves better than to be fighting for the right to make a AAAA team. Rangers will lose 100 games easily

I thought it was pretty clear I was comparing EHern to the Holt we saw with the Sox, not the much older one.

I try to spell things out more clearly going forward.
