Good news today: verdugo got a hit today. We need him to be Sharon one April.

Bad news today: what has happened to devers swing? He looks like he is trying to do calculus while he is in the batters box!

I'm doing calculus trying to figure out what the sentence in bold means.

Some fine pitching tonight, folks. Eovaldi, Sawamura, Ottavino and Taylor combined for a 4 hit shutout. It was only the Orioles, but still.

Good news today: Taylor continues to impress. Nice stuff. Verdugo with a better liking swing.

Bad news today: 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position .

Sox play O's 6 of the first 9 that count. It would be nice if we could win 4 of the 6 (with Tampa in between).

#RedSox giving Thaddeus Ward — it's no longer Thad we've been told — the start at Tampa Bay tomorrow with Nick Pivetta pitching the B game at Minnesota to avoid facing the Rays for a third time.

I predict the name change pays off for Thaddeus.

Good news today: hoping arauz makes the team!

Bad news today: defense kills Perez.

Arroyo is a lock.

If Cordero is ready, Marwin is the other bench guy, if not it's between Chavis and Duran not Arauz.

Good to see him doing well.

Arauz needs more time playing everyday in AA/AAA. He's not fully developed yet, so sticking him on the bench would do him no favors. I think Chavis has the inside edge if Cordero is out. Would be interesting for them to give Duran some run though.

I agree on Arauz, and I'm thrilled he looks to be stepping it up.

I have been against starting Duran on the 26 man roster all along, but if Cordero is out, Chavis as an OF option is not too appealing. Someone noted he has not played LF all spring, so I don't think they are thinking of using him there. That leaves Marwin in LF, Verdugo in CF and Renfroe in RF. The back up OF'er is JD. Arroyo does not play OF, nor does Plawecki. They seem to be adverse to playing EHern in the OF, as I have been pleading for almost from his signing, but I guess he's the 4th OF'er until Cordero is ready. That would make a Chavis/Arroyo 2B an interesting battle.

The added boost to the Duran case is that AAA does not start until May, so he will be parked at the alternative site not playing real live games. (BTW, why don't they play some alt site games?)

As everyone knows, I have not been a big Chavis fan. He reminds me too much of Middlebrooks without the poor attitude, but I've always said he deserves a long look, so we can find out, once and for all, if he's a keeper or more like a AAAA player. It seems like 2021 is the perfect season to play him, but he need not play right from the start. He should get a chance, at some point, unless everyone stays healthy (not likely) and everyone performs well (not likely).

To me, this is a real coin toss: Duran, who has hit very well this spring, too, vs Chavis.

If I had to choose, now, assuming no Cordero, I'd go with Chavis and be ready to play EHern in CF some games and perhaps in late innings after someone is PH for.

Plus a .396 OBP in spring games.

I've always been plugging Dalbec's OBP as the negator of his poor K rate.

The power makes him a big plus.

His defense is still largely unknown, but he shouldn't be a negative at 1B or 3B.

Yes, his willingness to take a walk is a big difference-maker.

Hard not to be excited about this guy.

#RedSox at #Rays (1:05 p.m., MLB Network): Arroyo 2B, Duran CF, Martinez RF, Cordero LF, Chavis 1B, Herrmann C, Downs SS, De La Guerra 3B, Puello DH, and Ward RHP

The definition of a B Squad game. Ward has yet to give up a run this ST. He only has 2.1 innings so far though. We'll see how long they let him go.

Personally, I'd go with Duran and stick with 13 batters when Cordero gets back. I'd do a straight platoon with Renfroe/Cordero. Duran would start in CF. Verdugo would start in RF. Kiké is 2B. Marwin acts as super sub.

Why not Chavis at 2B and move Kike to CF with Verdugo in RF and the platoon in LF?

Chavis has done as much if not more than Duran to earn a spot and is already on the 40 man roster...

I prefer a lineup that includes Kike's speed and Duran's speed. I also like Duran better than Chavis and believe his upside is better than what we've seen out of Chavis the past year and a half. Chavis' 660 OPS since 5/23/19 doesn't leave me feeling warm and fuzzy at the moment.

Early observations from a televised game: Jeter Downs made a great play from deep in the shortstop hole, gunning a perfect throw from a pop-up sitting position (though runner beat it)... maybe he sticks at short? Cordero plays left field on the warning track! Anything over his head is gone, and anything in front of him is probably falling in... maybe he sticks as a DH?

@redsoxstats

Duran now has 16 strikeouts in 42 plate appearances this spring, 38%. Even when he was slapping the ball all over the place in high-A he struck out 20% of the time and in double-A it was 24%... so something else to monitor when his games get going in May.

Cordero showed his power/speed potential: just missed the sweet spot and still lofted one off the right-center wall... Margot lost it in the sun and Cordero jogged into third with a triple, then jogged home on a Chavis sac fly to left.
