And really, all the analytics in the world don't make Mookie a lesser player...

The analytics back up the idea that he's one of the greats of his generation.

In-game tweet by Jon Heyman: "Dodgers ecstatic when Snell came out. That's something numbers don't show - other team doing backflips."

That's not the "b" in bWAR?

I wasn't rooting for LA, but as a Red Sox fan I am glad the Rays' total reliance on analytics backfired, so Bloom will know better than to ever try to get away with that all-in approach in New England.

Imagine the uproar -- and constant crap we'd have to watch and listen to forever from Yankee fans and FOX -- if a Sox pitcher was striking out the world in an elimination game, and the manager took the ball?

No team or manager should ever resort to total reliance on analytics, and I'm guessing that Cash did not rely solely on analytics. That said, perhaps he needs to be more flexible with altering his plan in game based on the way things are playing out. It's interesting to note that the Dodgers are a strong analytically based team as well. As Bell pointed out, Friedman is the predecessor to what the Rays are doing.

Backfired?

They took the 28th highest payroll and made it all the way to game 6 of the World Series. You don't ignore that type of accomplishment because of one week against the best record in MLB that did not work out...

Especially in the short sample crap shoot that is the playoffs.

It's good to praise TB's success. Their popularity, however, seems largely restricted to pretend GM's. THe average attendance of a MLB game is 28K. Tampa Bay? Half that. Why is that? (Is this DD's fault too?)

No, they have a s***** stadium in a horrible location. They get good tv ratings and are even more popular on the east coast of FL than the Marlins.

My local bookmaker, Paul ( Needlenose) Minagge has Cora as the odds on favorite for the Sox skipper job. He says that those other jabronis are just being interviewed to show some " due diligence " , whatever that is. The announcement is imminent. Edited by dgalehouse

Whoever Bloom chooses will be fine with me

I agree with you but personally it would not matter who the GM was who did the hiring. i'll support whoever is chosen by whoever does the choosing.

Cora is my top choice by far.

There are some other good candidates out there, but Cora is my top choice by far as well.

Five "finalists" have just been named for the Sox' skipper, and what are the predictions? Cora, Kelly, Mendoza, Rowson or Fuld?

If they hire Cora anyway, was this just a meticulous look for the masses, maybe to make it seem like they're really considering all facets, and then "upon careful scrutiny", they decide AC was the best overall candidate. That way, it doesn't look like the owners had their minds made up, or a secret handshake happened last winter, or that they automatically handed over the Nation's keys to a super-villain, and most importantly, that Bloom was granted his search and interview process, after all.

Or if they hire, say, Fuld -- but listed Cora as a finalist to appease his fans -- did they work the scheme in reverse?

The other two teams hiring new managers -- Chicago and Detroit -- didn't waste any time naming their guys. What's the hold-up here in Boston? Everyone knows when they axed RR that they had someone else in mind... and that they know what they're getting in Cora. Why list him as a finalist and not rehire him; wouldn't it be easier to just say "we decided to move on in a new direction"?

Maybe the Sox are waiting to announce Cora after Tuesday, when post-election controversy will distract the media...

I don't have the answer, but Bloom has shown himself to be a patient and meticulous fellow, as in the Mookie trade.

Do you really think the Sox care about appeasing Cora’s fans? Or what fans think about the manager at all?

This is an organization that hired Kevin Kennedy as a manager. Know who likes Kevin Kennedy? NOBODY!! Not even his mustache!

It is very possible that handling Swihart properly still lead to him sucking. In fact, it’s very likely...

What exactly is hang’em Chaim and the crackheads in the baseball analytics department doing to prepare for free agency and the rule 5 draft?

Or are they trying to anticipate cashman’s next move?

The Sox just came in fifth. Playing Cat and Mouse against the Yankees with regards to roster moves might be a bit premature.

Let’s pass Baltimore first...

I just hope JD doesn't look like Chris Davis again in 2021.

I didn't say he was good, but he did beat the Red Sox.

Holy s***. I didn't know what you were talking about till I looked it up.
