This makes me wonder what did their GM see in Aybar?

Or what he didn't see in Koss. Koss was a midseason All Star, post season All Star and Player of the Month in July in his only pro season.

Like it says there, triple-digits heat, 11.1 K/9. Lottery ticket, right?

Take upside over a guy you just drafted in the 12th round. It's not like Colorado struggles to find bats.

100 mph fastball.

Plenty of hard throwing minor league position players have transitioned into being major league relievers, including Trevor Hoffman, Joe Nathan, Sean Doolittle, Rafael Betancourt, Jordan Weems and Javier Guerra. (The Sox farm system seems to be the primary source for these guys, having produced Betancourt, Weems and Guerra before Aybar.)

They're taking a chance at a guy with some serious heat. You can teach a guy control and mechanics. Teaching a guy to throw 100 mph is a lot harder...

@redsoxstats

Fangraphs has the 2021 Red Sox projected at 10th in WAR from position players, 16th from starting pitchers, and 16th the bullpen. 14th in overall projected WAR for 2021.

There is about 130 WAR available on the free agent market.

Sox are in good position to climb considerably.

Smart offseason signings can get this team to 88 wins easy without long term implications. Erase the bad contracts and stay competitive. I trust Bloom 100% right now.

I like the new photo.

I have to think we are positioned to spend more than many other teams, but most of those teams are below us on the projected WAR rankings, already.

My guess is, we can climb to #9-10- maybe 7-8, if we go over the tax line. That puts us in playoff contention but maybe not high ring contention.

Messed up.

We may see a shortened season, too.

I think they should schedule a 140 game season for 4/1 - 9/30. I would have a week off from scheduled games after the ASB so that COVID impacted teams could reschedule. I'd also have a week at end where no games are currently scheduled for the same reason.

The NFL is currently railroading a 17 week season in, no reason MLB can't figure it out too. They should just make the schedule with a pencil with a big eraser and adjust as needed.

Maybe giving 3 days off a few times maybe once in June, July, August and September would allow for series or games to be made up.

I'm fine with that too. Plus actually forcing teams to use their expanded squads if they run into a COVID situation rather than just shutting a team down for 2 weeks a la Marlins.

If they use expanded squads, then we need to add more depth to our 40 man roster- not that it wasn't already a high priority.

The Red Sox announced Monday that infielder/outfielder Yairo Munoz has cleared waivers and been assigned outright to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Glad we could keep him as minor league depth.

Makes me wonder, if a signing is due, soon- maybe a rule 5 pick or two, since we have 2 open roster slots, now.

The Red Sox are NOT getting Arenado. Or Anthony Renaudo. Or this hybrid name of the two. Not sure who you mean.

Arenado is like a fine Molson. By which I mean he is a product of Coors. .975/.793 home/road splits are NOT worth $200 million...

I think it means they could pick a Rule V guy, are looking to trade or are getting ready to sign someone.

Munoz can still get claimed in the Rule V draft, but why would you do so if you could have just grabbed him on waivers. Maybe the Sox just figured waive him now when people are intentionally leaving 40 man slots open?

I think we'll draft 1 rule 5 guy and use the other open slot for the first FA signing. Maybe, they want 2 slots open in case two valued players are available in the rule 5 draft.

It would be disadvantageous for a team to take him via the rule 5 draft, and even of they did, he is not a massive loss. But much like last year when he was also exposed to waivers, most teams seem to be avoiding him anyway. It is possible his reputation from St. Louis is still an issue.

The Sox now have TWO pen spots on the 40 man roster. Maybe they make a Rule 5 pick, but hopefuly they are looking to add some actual MLB talent. But if it was a Rule 5 pick, hopefully they grab a pitcher they can at least bury in the back of the bullpen. A couple of intriguing names per various websites around the internet include Colorado LHP Riley Pint and San Diego RHP Jordan Guerrero. Both of whom do have triple digit heat, but as you can guess, obvious issues with control/command. But that is to be expected for any hard throwing lottery ticket left exposed...

Being near the top of the Rule 5 draft makes picking someone more likely. The 26 man roster helps, too.

Since I'm looking more at 2022 and beyond, I like the idea of drafting 1-2 players.

I'm more OK with drafting 1-2 players if the Sox can work out deals for them and keep them in the minors. Otherwise the Rule 5 draft is not a good way to develop players, as they most likely lose a year of development by sitting on the bench a lot in the majors, but the team also loses a year of control as they gain service time.

Now if they draft a couple guys to replace Valdez and Taylor (both of whom still have options) at the back end of the bullpen, that's not nearly as catastrophic. But hopefully they build up the front end with a couple of really solid relief pitchers at some point to reduce the need for the Rule 5 guys to pitch meaningful innings...

I think we can do both. The only true "keepers" in our pen, right now, are Barnes, Brasier and D Hern. Taylor is iffy, but I'd like to keep him. That leaves room for 1-2 rule 5 pitchers (1 rule 5 could be a position player) and 2-3 added pen arms.

Optioning Taylor to Pawtucket is still keeping him. Even if the Sox open the season with an 8 man bullpen, they're going to use somewhere between 15 and 20 (or more!) relief pitchers over the course of a 162 game season. There will be room for Taylor at some point. But when you are in the back of the bullpen and still have options, the opening day roster does become less of a certainty..

Seems like all our pen arms have options, except Brice. I can't see how he sticks around, but I said that 4 DFA's ago.

The Ray appear to really need a catcher. Maybe a Vazquez for Kiermaier and a SP'er (or two) could be in the works.

MLBTR...

The Rays’ primary focus early in the virtual Winter Meetings is to upgrade their catching corps, writes Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The team has only one catcher on its 40-man roster at the moment — prospect Ronaldo Hernandez, who is not yet MLB-ready — and will need to add multiple options, be it via free agency or trade.

Some signings...

Carlos Santana signs with KC for $17.5M/2 ($1M in incentives)

Adam Eaton signs with CWS for $7M/1 with club option for $8.5M for year two ($1M buyout)

Eaton would have been a nice target for the Red Sox. Surprised he got virtually no mention as one...
