I think Price will be quite $hitty next year....a whole year without pitching. I wonder how his teammates really feel about him "keeping in touch & supporting them" after opting out. Its like, yeah ok.

The 'teammates' in the organization's minor leagues likely feel pretty good about him.

Oh right. My bad. I saw the ref's to Felger but hadn't seen the article, and given the high eloquence of the reactions, I had no idea what it said. (Btw, I disagree with you that SG's post is POS. It is, rather, completely unintelligible.)

Here's a hypothetical just for fun. Maybe the Red Sox offered Mookie $350 million as a final offer. That's pretty close to what he got from the Dodgers.

Mookie supposedly asked for $420 million, so $350 million was still too far short. He thought he could get more in free agency.

When the Dodgers made their offer it was in the midst of a pandemic, so he decided the smart thing would be to take it.

None of that says he had no intention of ever playing in Boston again.

Even that is treating Felger as a reliable narrator. He is not.

LA Times has a story about how Sox fans will never forgive "the trade." I think that's untrue. The trade itself was fine. The decision to not come to terms with Mookie is the issue. I can't fault Bloom. I can only fault ownership.

I'm just saying that even if Mookie did turn down $350 million from Boston, it doesn't prove anything.

Seems reasonable. In addition, he might also have found that LA is a great place to live; also a good way to avoid the drama of the RS organization, which shows no signs of abating over the next few years.

I would agree. There are lots of moving parts to the story.

LA is a great place to live. I'd move back there if my wife didn't get sinus infections every other month while we were there.

Yes, it's hella expensive and the traffic is an abomination. It's still a great city with lots of stuff to do.

With public transportation (we're talking pre-Covid, of course!), I now put less than 1000 miles on my car. (Of course, people with real jobs--like pro athletes--don't have the option I have, which is to say 'Oh screw it; it's drizzling. I'm staying home.')

It's easy to see why some players would prefer to play for the Dodgers over the Red Sox. Great weather, more relaxed environment etc.

And f Mookie said he preferred the Dodgers because LA is just a nicer climate than Boston, no one would see any flaws in that point. But when he talks about how they are dedicated to winning just like he is, and says so before he plays a single game there, it either sounds like he's just making up an an excuse or makes me wonder if he forgot he played for a team that won 3 straight AL East pennants and a World Series.

I mean, if players are dedicated wo winning and that is their primary focus, does the "harsh press" really bother them much? They probably put more pressure on themselves...

True. But come on. It's a PR statement. No way he's going to a new team and say to his team-mates and bosses "I'm here for the weather." He says what every player would say going to a new team.

It's not just the press. There's also:

-The idiot segment of fans at the park.

-Bloggers, and fans on social media.

Were the 2020 Red Sox dedicated to winning?

He might have been thinking more about the short term future outlook and the 2019 results. Even if we made a stronger play to keep Betts, here, the idea of re-setting the tax was still hanging over the team. Betts knew this.

Dodgers fans show up in the 2nd inning and are gone in the 7th. Now maybe if they just sang a stupid song every 8th inning to keep people around.......

It will be amusing to read what the Bloom detractors say about the Betts trade in the event the Dodgers don't win the world series. The Rays are not chopped liver and still have a chance to win this year.

The only real downside to this trade for Sox fans was that maybe Boston would have made the same offer in the pandemic, and he might have re-thought it. But I doubt that was in the cards, because there was no way the Sox were going to keep piling on payroll after payroll without resetting at some point, which they could not do with Mookie and Price on the team.

So if the Sox do not trade him, this year would have been a disaster due to not having Sale and ERod out with injuries/disease and Price opting out. And no reset going forward, We could have seen a last place team watch Mookie depart for only a draft pick...

Posted
Unsure.

And while the 2020 Red Sox were a disaster, is this team a more competitive team if Sale and ERod are healthy?

Mookie was a big loss. But what really had the bigger impact? How many teams can lose their two best starting pitchers and still stay in the hunt?

Didn't he also make a big speech his first day in the clubhouse to inform his new teammates that he was all about winning, and that it was time they were too?

Two reasons I don't necessarily disbelieve the Felger quotes: Henry doubting a year ago "whether Mookie wants to play the rest of his career in Boston", and Betts' recent words reflecting on the trade. He was grateful the Red Sox kept him informed throughout the process... almost as if they were trying to accommodate his wishes (LA or SD? hmmm, both in Southern California) after a mutual understanding that he was just not going to re-sign here.
