I've always felt it would be easier to get towards parity, if you penalized the low spending teams for not spending rather than the high spending ones for spending too much.

There doesn't seem to be much "traction" toward that.

New CBA coming soon though.

Why is stadium attendance the only criteria you use?

The Rays have been a successful franchise since 2008. There is no reason to move them. Yes, they need a new ballpark in a better location, but I think they should stay in the Tampa area.

No.

A combination of several factors.

I'd think they'd want to more somewhere where they could make more money. (I'm not for forcing teams to move.)

Should the spending be calculated over one year or over five years?

A requirement that each team spend a minimum each year would be like forcing a person to live paycheck-to-paycheck, not saving money for the future.

The Houston Astros had one a baseball's lowest payrolls for a few years but increased spending once the club's underpriced assets made the team competitive.

Work something out. Maybe have smaller fines for yearly sub limits and higher ones for 3-5 year sub limits.

The players should push hard for this and raising the min wage by a lot.

Rays owner Stuart Sternberg is committed to the team splitting its home games between Tampa Bay and Montreal starting in 2028 after their stadium deal with the city of St. Petersburg expires. MLB has supported Sternberg's plan. Sternberg has placed some of the onus on fans showing up to games at the antiquated Tropicana Field. When asked about the potential of the Rays remaining in Tampa Bay over the long haul, he did not seem too optimistic. “We won 96 games last year. If things blow through this year and we sell a ton more tickets---a ton--and get up heading toward league average and we open up the (upper) decks and sponsors come on and we do that again next year, I’d be silly not to consider it,” the owner said. “I’m open-minded about it, but something has to bear out." In 2019, the Rays beat the A's in the AL Wild Card game before falling to the Astros in the division series. Still, the Rays finished 29th in MLB with an average attendance of 14,734.

I don't think they were looking at the Expos attendance figures at the end of their run...

For the Expos last 7 years in existence, their attendance was lower than the 2019 Rays. Montreal will compete with Miami year in and year out for the lowest attendance annually.

If the Sox opt to trade Benintendi (surplus value: $3.5mill) for a pitcher, BTV gives the following as the best matches:

Vince Velasquez (4.4)

Nick Margevicius (4.2)

Sean Newcomb (3.9)

Reynaldo Lopez (3.7)

Kewang Kim (3.5)

Alan Mills (3.5)

Brandon Bielak (3.3)

Jakub Junis (2.7)

Josh Duplantier (2.7)

Should the Sox have any interest in any of these?

@PeteAbe

RHP Chih-Jung Liu is on his way to Ft. Myers for the #RedSox fall camp.

The pitcher from Taiwan, who was signed last fall, reported to spring training but never got in a game before it was shut down.

@PeteAbe

Kennedy said team will roll back the unpopular 7:30 start times back to 7:10 or 7:05.

No comment on ticket prices.

I think I like the Boyd idea better.

It almost looks like you left out an initial for Baseball Trade OPENER Values... Bloom could deal Beni or wait until all those guys are cut, and then just sign them to minor league contracts.

The Red Sox probably should not trade low on Andrew Benintendi for any of those pitchers.

However, a trade of two years of Benintenti for five or six years of Seattle lefthander Nick Margevicius would give the Mariners a bridge with Kyle Lewis to highly ranked outfield prospects Jarred Kelenic, Julio Rodriguez and Taylor Trammell. Baseball Prospectus ranked Kelenic and Rodriguez No. 7 and No, 10 overall this year and Trammell No. 11 a year ago.

The lefthanded bat of Benintendi could join righthand-hitting Mitch Haniger and Kyle Lewis in the 2021 outfield as the prospects develop.

Or not.

This year 24-year-old Seattle lefthander Nick Margevicius posted 0.6 fWAR in 10 appearances, including seven starts, covering 41.1 innings:

The CDC are now saying a covid vaccine will not become widely available until sometime in the second quarter of 2021. I'm guessing that the process of immunizing the total population will take months. That could have a major impact on getting baseball back where there will be fans allowed into ball parks. How will the owners react to the FA market on that basis? It will be interesting.

I’m thinking you don’t have a grasp of who’s getting cut. Benintendi is just as likely as any of those arms...

I'm on record predicing Bloom will be swinging the machete all winter -- lopping off any "dead" branches from the Dombrowski/Cora family tree. Of course, part of the excavating better begin with the detritus he littered the franchise with this summer.

I'm still in shock he waived CJ Cron after a 30 homer season at age 28. I mean, Cron was no Big Papi, but he wasn't even worth a Lotto Pick-6?

I'm guessing no one would give him anything for Cron in a trade and he figured Cron not to be worth the raise he was due in arbitration.

I don't think Bloom is going to gut the Red Sox similarly. Just like Friedman became a different GM in LA...

Plus, it will very difficult to "lop off" dead or not-quite-dead-yet branches like Eovaldi, JD and Sale. He's not going to offer Bogey like he did Betts with Price.

He may end up trading a few pieces, some next summer, if we are sputtering, but I don't see a gut.

It's more likely he deals Beni, Vaz and or Barnes, but even they are questionable trade offers.

He's got enough spending room to make several serious additions. My guess is he makes one major trade and keeps the rest until summer.

I just think Red Sox fans should be prepared and not be surprised if favorite players are included in offseason trades. According to recent columnists, there are very few Red Sox fans left anyway, and certainly no more beloved players...

We have favorite players left?

Really, right now this team is Bogaerts and Devers. Verdugo went a long way to win some hearts. And no one loves any of our healthy pitchers...

LOL

Without seeming like I want to press the issue, who are the Sox players that it would break your heart if they were dealt away?

For me, once Mookie got dealt, that left only Bogaerts and Devers, I don't think anyone else would bother me...

That's the beauty of that situation. No team in their right mind will give up anything for Cesar Puello...

At this point, even as Eovaldi's biggest detractor, I don't foresee a situation where trading him makes sense. Before last season? Yes. But right now with the pitching in the state it is in, I don't see how they can deal him and improve for 2021. (Which of course, does not mean it cannot happen. Just means I cannot see it.)

Trading ERod would be dealing him at an all time low. What could you even get for him? Top 20 prospect? That's basically the return for Pillar.
