So you're assuming we have no chance in 2021.

Well, unless the Sox make some drastic moves, what would you think?

I will say definitively that said chance does not rest on Martin Perez. And Bloom has dealt as a seller while trying to contend before, such as when he acquired Trevor Richard and Nick Anderson last year while dealing away Ryne Stanek (plus)...

He's one of those "If you give me enough" guys, the he gets dealt. Now in this case, "enough" doesn't mean Wander Franco. I suspect the price is reasonable.

He's on a one year/option contract. Cledarly not a building block, and never meant to be here long term. If the Sox do bring him back, then we just have this same conversation again next year, only then 1) he might not be doing as well and 2) he won't bring back as much anyway, since he won't have the cheap option year attached...

At this point, I'd take Julio Franco (you know he can still hit)... but not Wanda Sykes.

Wanda Sykes would make these games more enjoyable to watch tho.

So you're on record that 2021 is a definite punt?

I am not.

I am saying that they do need to make some changes to compete. Think going into 2021 with Ryan Weber as the #3 or #4 starter will suddenly yield massive improvements?

I also said that it would not be unlike Bloom to deal Perez even if the Sox were in contention. Are you reading these posts?

I will say that one of the biggest factors for 2021 is the recovery of Eduardo Rodriguez...

Nope. Goes without saying they have to spend some.

I wpould imagine the reason for resetting this year is so they can.

While I hope they bring in Trevor Bauer, Bloom has never signed any free agent to any sort of deal that would be required to land Bauer. However, whether or not he believes in these type of deals is unknown, as he has never had the resources before to make such a deal...

Nor did Friedman until he went from TB to LA. I don't think Bloom will have a problem with it either.

MLB.com just speculated on a Vaz to Tampa trade for pitching prospects. Intra-division deals may be rare, but it does make sense when seeking to maximize value because no opposing GM knows the Rays system like Bloom (plus, he'd be helping his old buds improve their shot at beating NY).

The more good players you get rid of , the bigger the rebuild job becomes. And the longer it will take .

Unless you want a quick turnaround with limited success like in 2013.

Does Bloom have an A-Gon trade up his sleeve? Who would it involve?

2013 was limited success?

I think he means the success of Ben's signings like Victorino was limited to 2013 and turned to crap shortly thereafter.

Oof! I don't know how I feel about that one

Vaz is probably at the peak of his trade value. Catchers don't tend to peak very long either. I wouldn't hate the deal if it made sense.

Christian Vazquez says his goal is to retire with the Red Sox, and that it would be ‘sad’ if he was traded, but notes that he has no control over the matter.

Thank God you don’t run this team I’d do a trade with the Rays when Bloom knows the pitchers

@steve_hewitt

Nathan Eovaldi’s calf cramped up the other day, so he’s not starting tomorrow. He’ll start on Saturday instead. Colten Brewer will take his place tomorrow.

@ByChrisMason

No. 1 starter scratched with minor injury the week of the trade deadline?

Me too. But for a lot of people, 2014 and 2015 seemed intolerable...

2014 was a bizzaro season where Cespedes AND Pierzynski both played for the BOSOX.

2015 was Brock Holt's AS year and Mookie's rookie season. Rusney Castillo even got playing time! Jean Hatchi Machi!

2014/15 was the entirety of Edward Mujica's Sox career too.

@ChrisCotillo

The Red Sox are willing to pitch in significant salary relief to help get deals done (per @Sean_McAdam). Should help them gain leverage in trade talks and open up some possibilities.

@PadresDiehard

Nathan Eovaldi ($34 million for 2021-2022), J.D. Martinez ($38.75 million for 2021-2022), & Christian Vazquez ($13.25 million for 2021-2022) would all fit that category, & draw far more interest if Sox are willing to, say, pay half of the remaining $ on multi-year deals,” -McAdam

Guess it's safe to say he was the Last of the Mujicans

Are we that desperate to be a worse team (for at least another season), that we have to keep paying guys to play for someone else? I mean, it's not like any of them hate Boston, hate the media, publicly disrespect franchise Hall of Famers, can't beat the Yankees or play in Yankee Stadium or anywhere at night if it's too cold...

Yeah, the only way chipping in a lot of money to move Eovaldi and/or JD makes sense is if some really quality prospects are coming back.

With some of these player, maybe we should pay them to play else. The results paying them to play in Boston aren’t so good...
