Best hitter for Boston in that bunch was Ken Brett, who hit .295 with an .847 OPS in parts of four years as a Red Sox pitcher. Younger brother George always said Ken was the best ballplayer in the family.

George is a nice guy. And I would have taken him on our team over Ken.

To me, it was more about not giving Ben one more year than hiring DD.

Well, Henry could have hired someone less aggressive to take Ben's place. It was the change in mentality to 'win now' mode.

But I 100% agree that Ben should have been given one more year. No doubt about it.

The Sox could have drafted him, but they chose Jim Rice instead....

I'd have liked someone different, too. I'm glad we ended up with a ring, or DD would be roasted alive.

I'm just saying I think pushing Ben aside too early was the bigger mistake. Had we not won a ring under DD, then I'd change my choice.

Rice was a better pick at the time; he was an amateur terror with the bat, and the best hitter in the minor leagues before reaching Boston. Brett and the next pick, Mike Schmidt, grew into greatness. George's Yaz-stance was completely changed by Charley Lau, and Schmidt started out as a K-machine.

Still that draft had 3 Hall of Famers in the top 30 picks. Ironic, because the first pick that year (Danny Goodwin) might have been the biggest bust in draft history...

June 8, 1971: Drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 1st round (1st pick) of the 1971 amateur draft, but did not sign.

Wowzers...

He was drafted number 1 overall 4 years later (after college), making him the only player ever drafted number 1 overall twice. He did make MLB, but only posted a .674 OPS in 707 PA's over 7 seasons....

In spite of having a dream sports name, made up of 'good' and 'win'.

Well, we will always have Brian (no relation)...

I have to say, at least Chaim did give us the lovely twitter phenom Robert Stock.

If you don't know, a twitter user said that Stock looked like a twice divorced dad. Stock's wife commented that if he keeps walking the first batter, she may consider it. LOL Now everyone loves them.

@redsoxstats

Phillips Valdez's changeup has been one of the most devastating 2-strike pitches in baseball this year. Based on xwOBA only Gallen's CU, Karinchak's FB, and Bieber's CU have been slightly more dominant.

1 for 25, 17 strikeout, 4 weak groundouts, 2 flyouts, pop out, and a single.

Is this guy the only silver lining we have left for the 2020 season? (Perez? Verdugo?)

He is probably the only potential keeper from the Bloom Dumpster Diving Experiment, although Osich would be on the list as well had he not been dealt...

Finding gems in the dumpster was supposed to be Blooms strong area. He deserves more time, but it would have been nice to see some results, already.

Perez looks like a nice get, but $6M is not really dumpster diving.

Besides Valdez and Osich, here's an incomplete list of "dives:"

Chris Mazza

Mike Kickham

Kevin Plawecki

Jeffrey Springs (for S Travis)

Matt Hall (for Jhon Nunez)

Cesar Puello

Kevin Pillar (since traded)

Jonathan Lucroy

Collin McHugh

Josh Osich (since traded)

Jhonny Pereda (for Lakins)

Zack Godley

Dylan Covey

Stephen Gonsalves

Robert Stock

Christian Arroyo

Pivetta & Seabold (for Workman & Hembree)

Potts & Rosario (for Moreland)

PTBNLs (for Pillar & Osich)

I am looking at his MiLB free agent acquisitions and his minor league veteran trades as his "dives." The overwhelming bulk of them have done next to nothing. Osich was a good pickup. Valdez was a good pickup. Really, for 25+ year old career minor leaguers released by other teams, to find two players that good is actually alot. Some of the rest were signed due to some raw skills like Stock (100mph fastball), Caleb Simpson (also a 100mph fastball, but not on your list), and Matt Hall (spin rate). But the raw talents have not really produced. Stock just walks people faster than other pitchers.

Godley has been occasionally good, but lately he is not exactly leaving me wanting more. He's really been a disappointment since those two respectable seasons he had in Arizona in 2017-18, when he gave the DBacks 333 IP of 4.10 ERA/3.63 FIP. Not sure why his last two years have been a series of poor starts and DFAs, but they have...

Shut Eovaldi down...

@alexspeier

Nate Eovaldi threw a bullpen but still feels soreness in his strained calf, so he’s going to be pushed back again. He’s unlikely to pitch again before late next week.

That's the same injury I've been dealing with for 4 months

Or have him mercifully put to sleep. He’s clearly suffering...

Thank goodness we got a ring out of it.

What? He’s injured again? What a complete shocker! Who could have ever seen this coming?

I never even knew he'd come back.
