Nerds are awesome! Speier is awesome! Both data wise and personality wise.

We should be so lucky as to have him bless us with his presence on the telecasts.

I think he's better in the studio after the game rather than during a live broadcast. Maybe looping him in throughout the game rather than forcing him to sit there for half an inning would work better? Like just wait for the right time in the game for him to include a statistical discussion about something that is currently happening in the game?

As I said, I have no problem with him during a live broadcast. If they want to loop him in, that would be fine also.

Yes to Speier, no to Puig! Back when Gammons wrote the first weekly notes column, a regular feature at the end always cited some interesting numbers from a crazed statistician named Chuck Something (I think).

As for personality, that's the ex-jocks department. If they have it, they stick: Remdog, Eck, Pedro si... Monty, Salty, Walker, Timlin I dunno. Wake, Gomes, maybe. Rice never liked the media, and for longest time after he joined it he never contributed any insight, but they like touting his HOF status. He has lightened up more in his old age, sharing barbs with colleagues.

Speier seems like a nice guy but it's obvious the reason they have him on is just to present the facts, ma'am. The White House would love him... or not (what happened to that poster?).

He adds nothing to the broadcast. If you follow him on Twitter, you already have the information that he mentions on air. I listen to him and never get anything new or interesting.

If our starting pitching is as bad I expect it will be, Bloom’in Idiot will be a common phrase here.

You know the Red Sox will try to tell fans to have some patience with the Baby Bloomers...

Why shouldn’t we totally tank this year and get as high a draft pick as possible?

Betts and price are gone. Sale is a wreck. Nathan’s UCL makes a violin string look strong. Bradley and Martinez have their bags packed ready to bolt at first chance.

When you are saying Weber, hall, Perez and Johnson in the same sentence as starter, then you know your team is circling the tidy bowl.

Hang.’em Chaim, this is probably going to be your one and only chance blow up the dombrowski mess and rebuild the right way.

We won't have to tank to suck.

I agree. This is a good year to suck. Depending on who we see as essential to a rebuild, we should have a lot of cap space this winter, and with only 60 games, we can keep a decent amount of integrity. I will never support tanking. Always play to win, but acknowledge that not a lot of winning will occur

On paper , the Sox surely look like also rans. I do think that the abbreviated schedule will give them ( and others ) a better chance to pull off an upset. Don't abandon the ship before it even sets sail.

We have a solid base to work with going forward.

Spend wisely, draft well, sign well.

See you in '21.

Thank you! That's the spirit!

Who knows what can happen in a very short season?

Have some faith people!

Then why hasn't JD opted out yet? Maybe because your premise is bad?

If Bloom can figure out how to start developing pitching, he should have a lifetime job here.

@pgammo

Reasons Boston must get their 3 power LHPs--Rodriguez, Hernandez, Taylor--in sync quickly:1. Current 5 man rotation was 19-20, 5.54 ERA in '19; 2.w/short rotation needs Taylor/Hernandez, 109 K/67.2 IP; 3.after 3 w/Orioles, 22 G to Aug. 19 w/Mets, Yanks, Rays, Jays, Phils.

Why hasn't the organization gone out and outbid for the best pitching scouting and developing people in the business?

It can't cost more than a low or mid level FA.

Maybe because there's no science to pitching......can anyone really project out an 18 year old? And if there's secret to developing pitchers, why hasn't that guy made millions of dollars.....it's similar to guessing about our pandemic.

Nick!!!

The Rays have a pretty good track record of it though.

Well, some guys and some organizations have a much better track record with young pitchers. You'd think it has something to do with the people in the organization, but maybe it's all just a crap shoot, and we keep getting crap shot at us.

I'm half messing with you.....it's just frustrating....Big Payroll, Big Budget, small return when it comes to starting pitching..

It's been super frustrating. 4+ GMs and not one of them could get the right people in the right places.

Yup, really rough go of it when they drafted Lester/Paplebon/Buchholz.

Also, those 4 flags they got look pretty good.
