Rickey says "Rickey did"

I actually wasn’t sure Rickey hit all the criteria, but he does.

Tell McCaffrey I have debunked him again!

Better than a Drew who when he retired Jon Heyman called one of the most unpopular players in the game.

Why do I care if he's unpopular?

Rickey says "Rickey hits everything including criteria!"

As opposed to McCaffrey, who was also wrong?

Ok, technically he was right in that he couldn’t find one. But his implication that it had never happened was misleading. That it took me 3 seconds to debunk him either means I’m a genius (I’m not) or he is a very weak researcher whose every writing should be questioned...

Nice phrase. You (and Kimmie) have chanced my thinking on this. It reminds me of what the great philosopher Jagger said, "You can't always get what you want, but sometimes.... you get what you need.'

We'd all like to see Mookie around for his entire career, but at what price? Do you want to see him here forever if it means we never win a WSC again because JH can't/won't spend enough additional money to put quality players around him?

We may not like this but it may be what we need.

Moon, please fix your quoting. It's all jacked up today.

OK. I'm half blind. I didn't notice.

not sure why we are talking about Drew but he earned his entire contract with the grand slam......

I was just comparing how Drew and Verdugo had similar profiles and Drew's first full year was similar to Verdugo's. Seems like a good comp to me.

I’m messing up this morning in a doctor waiting room.

Technically Henderson did it in his second time hitting free agency. Too much back and forth with Oakland and New York.

While I think I have seen a couple questionable and wrong tweets from Jen McCaffrey posted here, I’m clearly confusing my sports personalities...

well there you go. Rickey says: "Rickey thinks a woman should spend her waking hours pampering Rickey not discussing sport"

Same reason most of you guys get sand in your undies over Mendoza.

I never noticed that button before. Seems dangerous.

@jcmccaffrey

Will the Red Sox re-sign Betts in free agency? A few weeks ago, we tried to find an example of a player who'd never signed an extension with his team was traded by that team, then re-signed w/ that team as a first-time free agent. We couldn't find one.

Rickey Henderson was on his second free agency.

But Kenny Lofton does fit the criteria.

I feel vindicated in questioning her research skills...

Or at least stop doing baseball research. Seriously.

I’m in a doctors waiting room on a f***ing outdated cell phone and I debunked on the second name I looked up. And the first one was a near miss on the second free agency...

I now know just to roll my eyes whenever you rant about racism.

I’d love Mookie back, I’m sure we all would. But there is almost no way that happens. I think dodgers end up paying him, especially after giving up some legit prospects for him

Really they gave up a player in Verdugo who would have backed up Betts and two blocked or lesser prospects in Downs (behind Lux) and Wong (behind Smith and Ruiz)...

They'll pay him if they believe they can extend Bellinger. Not sure they want both of them long term.

Vindicated? The larger point stands. It almost never happens. Also, she didn’t say that it never happened. She just said that she couldn’t find one.

Yes. I pointed out earlier her claim was only what she could find. My point was that clearly means she didn’t look very hard. I looked up two names.

And a lot of her claim was irrelevant characteristics unique to Betts. That he never signed an extension with a Boston might not be relevant to how he approaches free agency, but it does serve the purpose of making Aroldis Chapman dissimilar...

The reason he was unpopular was because his teammates believed he dogged it. He had phantom injuries and simply never gave it his best effort. I believe there once was a story alleging that during a game JD Drew was in the clubhouse picking out furniture while he was in the lineup.

I wouldn’t hold my breath on Mookie coming back. The point is valid that it is very rare.

Edit: Plus Mookie will find that Boston is small, overpriced and hard to get around. There are much better places to live.

My take on what Boston took:

Verdugo was the best young outfielder available with 4 WAR, .800 OPS promise, the kind of above-average player a contender needs. Yes, there are questions about health and maturity -- and not just with talksox posters like me -- but even with most young athletes we rant about.

Downs rockets to the top of Boston's prospect list, like a shortstop snagging a foul pop and diving face-first into the seats after 89 more strides. If he continues to rake in the minors, I predict this middle infielder will debut at second base in Fenway by mid-summer (as does ESPN)... depending on the depth of Sox suckitude.

Wong has been compared to Swihart because of a promising bat and versatility, though he's only played catcher for two years. My initial reaction is that I don't want another Swihart debacle -- catcher is too all-encompassing to waste time dabbling at other positions. He cranked 24 homers last season, more than any Red Sox outfielder still in their entire system. Maybe a faster path to the bigs is to shift Wong to left field full-time today.

Now, I'd like to leave this nightmare thread behind forever... can someone please direct me to thread about moving forward and the coming MLB season?
