The season is a marathon not a sprint. Anything can happen along the way and health trumps everything!

So maybe sale’s arm does not fall off. Maybe Rodriguez does not take a step back, maybe eavoldi’s cutter comes back,

That’s why they play the games,

Who gives two shits about Mookie until next winter seriously what a stupid jilted loser thread now .

So if you acknowledge it was to “give flexibility,” you’re finally admitting the Sox were at their spending limits. Hence the need for a salary dump.

But, yes, pitching...

Hopefully, this so called reset does bring us pitching. You look at the current starters and you can’t say there is one starter you know what you are going to get from in 2020. An can we please draft and produce a starter or two. It would save throwing all of this money at the FA pitchers. Or trading half the farm for someone. There are teams around the league that consistently do this. Bloom was hired to this, so let’s hope it happens.

pitching....there is no doubt in my mind that bloom has a plan. it will be fun to keep guessing as to what that plan is but based on his history....i expect us to have a pretty solid staff in the coming years.

patience is required though.

@jcmccaffrey

Regarding whether they’ll try to pursue Betts next winter in free agency, Kennedy says they can’t comment on a player w/ another team but they’ve continually been among the top spending teams in baseball and have spent big when appropriate so they see next winter as no different

I had no issues with that the Sox said today in their presser. Usually I have something to complain about. No, they didn't come clean on the genesis of the trade (getting under the CBT). What they are saying is tantamount to saying they don't expect anything out of the 2020 season. That does surprise me. Then again if they can't market speculation about the possible "greatness" as opposed to goodness of the 2020 edition, what are they really going to say?

It's clear that the Sox absolutely positively think Mookie will test the FA market and there is nothing they could have offered him within reason to prevent that.

So fine....it is what it is. Verdugo's back problems better not turn out to be chronic. That is about all I have to say.

Recently, I posted that Kennedy said ticket sales were down 6% from last year. His most recent statement is that sales are down 15% from last year. That is a startling drop. That could mean of over 400,000 from last year. That could mean a loss of total revenue of well over 30 million dllrs in ticket and other sales at the ballpark alone.

What Henry needs to really worry about is the phenomenon of how difficult it is to win back fans who have quit on the team.

They are definitely going to take hit there regardless of having a relatively large payroll. "Sneaky good in 2020" (from Roach today) is not something that markets well to the Boston fan base, given ticket prices, other things you can do with your entertainment dollars and 4 championships in 19 years.

Henry was not blaming anybody for where they are though. He basically said the Red Sox themselves put themselves in this position. They can't come out and blame the Sale and Eovaldi contracts because those guys are still here. Some of the assembled media tried to get them to go down that road but they just can't. I can't blame the Sox Brass for that.

I know this isn’t “popular “ or maybe “politically Correct “ some my say “I’m nuts “ or Over the Top “ ...Mookie is a Dodger hence is “Dog s*** “ or “Trash “,Or I’d say a royal “Puss Cakes “ a “choking ass Dog” he is literal dirt or gum on the bottom of a railing ...He’s No longer “Worthy” of any positive “Compliment “ .

he was traded. he didn't ask/request/demand to be traded. you're over the top.

So OK, I did not hear Sam go off on a tickets sales pitch during this press conference which he did during this presser which was ill timed at best....flat oblivious at worst.

A loss of fans isn't just bad for Henry, it's bad for the fans who are left.

Decreased revenue could lead to further payroll cutting.

The glory days of this franchise may be at an end.

Part of Kennedy's pretty ugly pitch for ticket sales was the following:

"every dollar of ticket sales and concessions gets plowed back into the team."

A complete and utter fantasy, a lie that is beneath him or at least I thought it was.

Maybe, but he has also shown that he can spend $240 million on this team and make a profit.

If the team wins, the fans will be there. Mookie or no Mookie..

Not surprising.

Especially, when you consider he'll be a Sox again next year.

Don't know why, but somehow this statement made it worse for me.

I thought it was a very well thought out statement. Yes, it was calculation and was designed to calm the masses by explaining what's going on, but I thought it all made sense.

Maine is the best state in the union...

None is this is going to assuage anyone. Pulling out anecdotes of the good ole days (when the point is they WEREN'T good ole days, e.g., Musial), or invoking the Nomar trade (where they got back a hell of a lot more than they did this time--well, I admit, they didn't get anyone with sexual assault charges against them--there is that) won't do squat. Find me someone who was against the trade before who, after hearing Henry, is now persuaded.

As for your assurance that Mookie will be back in a year, I'll take that bet. You name the stakes.

It is a plea borne of desperation. They f***ed up big time. They are still not being honest about what they did and how they mislead the fans. f***ing liars.

I agree with all that.

I guess it was just the acknowledgement of just how BIG & HISTORIC a move this was, combined with my feeling that we got very little in the trade.

It wasn't anything I didn't know, just a further hollowing of the rational.

When it comes down to it, I'm HIGHLY DOUBTFUL the guys we got net us hardly anything. Sure! We clear up salary space, and can now afford 2 front line guys for 1. I get that. I just think... what the hell?? We could do that at the end of the season, and enjoy Mookie for another year.

I'm happy to be rid of Price, but that does leave us with 2 huge holes to fill this year. When our SR is already in serious trouble, & quite likely plagued by injury already.

I have little confidence in any of the pickups.

Vergugo looks like a run of the mill guy, easily picked up next year for the money?

Hell, idk? Can't even really explain why I felt so s***** after the statement? It was well stated, but I felt it could have been left unsaid.

I guess all it comes down to is....

There is absolutely NOW WAY to feel good about this!

Ironically, JH mentions Nomar & Jacoby?

BOTH were injury plagued, & BOTH had worn out their welcome with the hard core Sox fans.

Mookie? His acknowledgement that we are talking about a Stan the Man, Demagio, Ted William's, Yaz, et al, was just more salt in the wound.

YES! I fully realize I've see-sawed back & forth, at one time trying to rationalize a tough business decision, & now days later bemoaning a devastating loss....

It is what it is. Wish I felt better about the pick ups, but i just don't.

The last time a star player left near the top of his game was either Fred Lynn or Carlton Fisk. Lester is a step below those guys IMO.

It sure beats a comp pick.

We'll never know about winning in 2020 had we kept Betts, so that argument can never be settled.

I see Verdugo as better than "run of the mill". Downs has real talent and is immediately our 1 or 2 best prospect. Wong is a long shot but could be a nice DH/utility guy. The $16M saved on Price x 3 years could be huge, especially if Bloom works his budget magic.

Past Lester, the rest of your list was not at the top of their game when they left the Sox. I don't even know what "The Rooster" is doing on this list though he was one of my favorite Sox players. Virtually all except Rick were much older than Mookie and or had sustained enough abuse from the game to be well past their prime.

True. I think Burleson might not belong on the list, but he wasn't old.

Is there anyone you'd put behind Lester?

Certainly, Roger Clemens.

(I'm not counting prospects traded that became great, either- like Bagwell or Schill or even Cecil Cooper.)

Mo Vaughn?

George Scott (1st time)?

Reggie Smith?

Paplebon?

Ellsbury?

Burks?

Beckett?

Bill Lee?

Hurst?

Tiant?

Also, while Boggs was 35 when he left Boston, he did go on tho hit .803 in 2600 PAs with NYY. Damon was 31 and hit .821 in NY (4 yrs) in over 2500 PAs. Burleson was 29, and played very little after the trade, but he was prime when he left. (True, he was no Betts or Fisk.)

Speaking of Manny Ramirez, It is so weird seeing he had those two awful last seasons with the White Sox and Rays. I honestly had completely forgotten he played for Tampa in 2011 for 5 games and went 1-17.
