I'm still not thrilled but at least we have three tickets now and they are all healthier bets than Gaterol.

 

We still eat half of Price's contract. Wish we could have negotiated that down to retaining 1/3. Cos Price at $20m per year is actually a reasonable deal in today's market. Price at $15m per year is giving him away.

 

Are we under the Lux Tax yet or do we still need to trade off JBJ's 11m?

 

As far as Graterol goes, if he projects to be a starter, which apparently he does not, then I would have preferred him over Downs. If his ceiling is a strong reliever, than I much prefer Downs.

 

In short, Starter Graterol > Downs > Reliever Graterol.

This is what it comes down to. I get the kids have their heroes and losing Mookie hurts (although I find it queasy to be polite, to see how some adults are acting over it all), but does anyone think Mookie really cares that much about some brokenhearted kid in New England?

 

After the 2017 season when he only hit .264 and had the worst year of his young career, the Sox offered him 8 years at $200. He was only 25. He said no. He's only ever wanted to test free agency, and he's testing it to get the most money possible.

 

All this 'baseball isn't a business to me' stuff is all well and good, but the man you are crying to be signed up no matter the cost, sees it as that - a business. And he's going to the team that shells out, no matter how many men/children are devastated by his decision. His loyalty is to his next contract.

 

So let's not make it out like we traded away a guy desperate to stay and sign with the team he loves. He's going to follow the money.

Oh please. this makes it sound as if Mookie traded himself. He didn't. And so far, the evidence we have is that the ones who were most concerned about money were JH and Bloom. Not blaming them, really. Bloom did what he was hired to do. But when you hand over a business decision to a bean-counter, you can expect beans. The one thing we can be sure never happened was a directive to Bloom to keep Boston's great relationship with its fan base intact.

True, sexual assault and rape are bad stuff, but Clemons did more than use steroids, he lied to Congress, which is a felony, a serious crime. I realize the charge of perjury wasn't proven, but it is pretty clear that Clemons lied.

 

There is speculation that Clemons had sex with that country singer when she was below the age of consent. But I don't remember the full story behind that one. Regardless, I do remember when Clemons spoke in front of Congress and committed a felony. Clemons is a criminal who should have been locked up.

It is the ultimate criteria of success. The reality of the situation is that only a few small market teams have won W.S. Championships in the 21st Century and that matters.

 

I realize that some teams should spend more, but the small market teams simply don't have the revenue to dole out a 330 million dollar contract on one player (G.Cole). When the Yankees signed Sabathia, Teixeria, and Burnett in one offseason, they basically bought a World Series title. How many small market teams had the revenue to sign all three in one offseason?

 

Empirically, big market teams have a competitive advantage in winning W.S. championships. It is what it is.

And there are times when statutory rape shouldn’t be a big deal. My wife once had an 18yo student who was charged by the father of his 17yo girlfriend. The law is the law, but that’s instance doesn’t quite feel like the intent of the legal system here. The Clemens case doesn’t fall into that same category, either...

There are questions about her being 15, but she was certainly 16 when Clemens took her on unaccompanied vacations. I am almost 100% certain Roger did NOT wait 2+ years to get intimate with her. I'm all for believing the woman, but when she really liked Roger,felt is was consenual, and he was paying her large sums of money, one can understand her not being fully forthright.

 

Clemens clearly took advantage of her naivety and her vulnerable/fragile circumstances. She ended up getting hooked on drugs (maybe using some of Roger's money to buy them) and ultimately committed suicide years later. She was obviously a troubled girl from the start, and the community down here in Sugar Land pretty much all agree that he is a scumbag and did much worse than what came out. I know you can't believe rumors, but there is just too much evidence for me to think nothing happened until she was 18.
