So I am hearing Bloom is asking the Dodgers for a top 10 Prospect now. Not sure if they are trying to blow up Verdugo as part of the deal or not.

That wouldn't bother me one bit.

MLBTR...

February 7: The trade is expected to become official today, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets, citing sources from multiple teams involved in the deal. Completion of the Betts blockbuster would serve as a precursor for the finalization of the Dodgers’ Pederson/Stripling trade with the Angels as well.

It’s not yet clear what type of alterations, if any, will be made to the deal. Heyman tweeted earlier this morning that the Red Sox have been seeking an additional top prospect from the Twins, although it’s difficult to envision the Twins parting with another highly regarded talent without additional pieces being sent their way.

If I were the Twins' GM there's no way I part with an additional top prospect if all I'm getting in return is Maeda.

Nice phrase. You (and Kimmie) have chanced my thinking on this. It reminds me of what the great philosopher Jagger said, "You can't always get what you want, but sometimes.... you get what you need.'

We'd all like to see Mookie around for his entire career, but at what price? Do you want to see him here forever if it means we never win a WSC again because JH can't/won't spend enough additional money to put quality players around him?

We may not like this but it may be what we need.

Agreed. Either substitute a similar prospect or maybe add a minor one.

It's not likely the Twins send another prospect back with nothing else changing.

If the Red Sox sent over Booby Dalbec, maybe the Twins send back Jhoan Duran. Or maybe a Gilberto Jimenez / Lewis Thorpe swap works for both teams.

More likely something around Edwar Colina and, say, Colten Brewer...

i think Los Dodgers will need to kick in some more $ for price or send a prospect.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Bloom is just looking for extra $ for Price.

And yet every talking head in the country says the Dodgers made out like bandits....

So many of the baseball analysts and bloggers are idiots.

The Dodgers were already getting the short end* by trading five years of Alex Verdugo plus four years of Kenta Maeda on a team-friendly contract.

That's almost word for word what I said a while back.

Oh I agree.

But even MLB Network talking heads said so...

What a slow-motion disaster this has turned into.

It feels like the Red Sox realized too late that they were about to get bent over (this deal is very different if Graterol has a strong chance of being a front-half-of-the-rotation starter vs. if he ultimately belongs in the bullpen, and something seems to have brought the Sox around to the latter opinion) and now want more, but I don't know why either LA or Minnesota would be motivated to give it to them at this point.

I prefer not to think of that way.

I'm still seeing Bloom as a very patient and resolute guy.

Hopefully he proves me right! :)

I share your view of Bloom, though I tend to think ownership set him up to fail this offseason.

Hopefully you're right and this will all work out for the best.

I don't think they "set him up to fail". I mean, why would they want him to fail?

I just think he's in a tough spot.

No. I'm saying Price was forced on the Dodgers, so they could get Betts.

They would not trade Maeda and his cheap contract for Price at $15M x 3 years.

They only did it to get Betts.

I'm not saying my projection of what Price is worth is correct, since the FA market is ultimately set by what one GM is willing to pay.

IMO, Price is worth about $10-12M a year x 3 years. I'm not sure I'd give even that for him, at his age and with his "miracle arm" hanging by a thread.

Maybe $15M x 3 is the going rate, and the Dodgers looked to break even, budgetwise.

Word was we'd get Verdugo plus prospects for Betts alone. We forced Price on them. Yes, we paid $16M x 3 to get them to take him, but we apparently went from several prospects added to just the one from MN.

It's my take, but I truly believe LA would rather have given us Verdugo & Maeda for Betts than Verdugo & Maeda for Betts, Price $48M.

If Price was forced on the Dodgers, wouldn't the Dodgers have given up more in return if they did not have to take Price?

That's all I'm saying.

I am not convinced that Price was forced on the Dodgers either. The Dodgers are adamant about winning it all now and Mookie and Price make that more possible in the short run. I think the short run is really all the Dodgers are thinking about regarding this deal.

It is not really IMO a matter of one team getting over on the other in this trade. Its a matter of both teams getting what they want out of it. I do think Boston fans and media reacted a bit badly to this trade and the Sox brass are reacting to that. Even the Twins considered Gatorade a relief pitcher. So its a bit rich that the Sox now claim they thought him a starter just because he has started for the Twins. Just as we claim that our Sox likely know more about our players than any other team, the Twins likely know more about their players than any other team.

The real story here is that the Dodgers want this deal and Red Sox want this deal. Those two teams will have to work it out IMO.

I feel so sorry for these multi-million dollar players (Price & Mookie) being in limbo and not knowing what luxury condo they will be living in and what city they will be playing in. Must be horrible! Tony Clark things so! What an idiot.

Did you want Price on the Red Sox next year?

Meaning 2021 or 2020?

It does not matter what I want. I don't own the team. If you read my post again you should be able to figure out that IMO this deal is about both teams, Dodgers and Sox, getting what they want out of it. This deal does not fit the mold most fans want it to fit of "we really put one over on them" or conversely "they really put one over on us".

I don't know what the Sox were doing diddling themselves over the Twins pitcher.

Pull the deal and start over .

Does that mean pull the deal and incur the penalties with the salaries of David Price and Mookie Betts on the payroll? What if other offers are not as good?

The reported tentative deal was likely the product of negotiations that started in November.
