Well yeah, but I was already considering law school. No offense to you and MVP, but I really don't want to be an accountant, at least not a traditional accountant. The boring desk job is not for me

As an accountant in 'public practice', most of the time I wouldn't describe my job as boring. I'd describe it as hectic, stressful, frustrating, maddening, and, sometimes, rewarding.

There’s a reason there are so few TV shows about accountants. Same goes for us engineers...

I guess there's an element of truth in that. Going through the recruiting process I'm sure I've heard way more about the negatives than about the positives. People love to complain

FWIW, you accountants and engineers are some of my favorite people. :)

Public is not boring for sure.

The sensuality involved would make it automatically NC27. Studios would lose money.

I was trying to think of any.

For engineers, I think the only TV show ever was the animated “Dilbert” series. But - and it might be time for a binge here - doesn’t Jason Bateman play an accountant in “Ozark”?

There’s a Ben Affleck movie called The Accountant.

Stop. This can only be posted in an adults only forum..,

Also, “Midnight Run” where Charles Grodin plays an accountant.

All these examples all have one major commonality: they all deal with embezzlement. Is that the only plot-worthy tool in the accountancy toolbox? It’s still more than us engineers have. (We even had to borrow it for the plot of “Office Space.”)

Now that's what I call foreplay

Yes.

Having been involved in the manufacturing of paper it would seem that might be one of the most boring professions, and yet we have, "The Office".

But do they ever do any actual work on that show?

Yes.

Well it is something. We engineers have what? Maybe management bureaucracy? Scope creep? Ooooh scary!!

But what would an accountant do with duct tape, a Swiss Army knife and other stuff lying around? I’m thinking about MacGyver here (yeah, I know he was a special ops guy), or those guys in Apollo 13 who rigged a way for the square CO2 filter to fit the round hole in the LEM.

I could make a mean AP folder with duct tape and a knife.

We have a movie plot device! We just need a script. I’m thinking an action movie here. Working title “Terminal Deductions”.

Sounds too tax heavy for me. I’m out.

This isn’t Shark Tank.

Also, I’m envisioning more disembowelments than actual taxes...

So I take it you work on the audit side then?

I did both for a few years. Then was just audit. I went private after 8 busy seasons.

Not the first time I've heard someone ditching public accounting after busy season

It won’t be the last either. The motto of public is churn and burn. It’s good for the experience though.

I'm not drawn to public accounting, or even accounting at all. There's so many other things I would prefer to do. I wouldn't mind working as an accountant, but it's not my priority. I'm just so good at it, though

If you’re good at it, take the CPA exam. It’ll open a lot of doors when it’s on your resume. Being an accountant and being a CFO are two completely different skill sets IMO.
