People need to keep this in mind. The budget matters. It doesn't matter how much money Henry has, he is not going to spend without limit.

This is the reason why you don't give Mookie a $420 mil contract.

What will you say, if they do give $400+M next winter?

Also, if the Sox do give him $400+ mil, prepare for another cliff in about 2028.

Perhaps sooner. Maybe by year 3 of the lux tax overage, assuming the lux tax is still around.

So... Is Verdugo the heir apparent to RF in Fenway? Does Castillo enter into the mix anywhere?

If we don't add any big salaries, why not give Castillo a shot?

Prevents in season moves. Prevents Devers/ERod extension.

It’s not that. Henry find another few outside guys to spend lavishly on after a few lackluster years.

This damn Henry and all the success he's brought us! What a bastard!

Yup. It made smart business sense to get under the cap, the sense will allow us to compete strongly again, even if do have to take a year out.

Because of Henry’s greatness, we can’t re-sign one of three best players in the game.

I mean, that's just factually incorrect isn't it? Because of this possible move we can re-sign him next year. Whether we will or not we will have to see.

Mistakes were made, there's no question on that. I'm okay with the idea that this can happen, especially considering the WS rings we've accumulated these past 15/16 years.

Mookie should have been a Red Sox lifer regardless of lux tax issues. They should have foreseen this and not signed Eovaldi, Sale extension and JBJ tendering.

It's a two-way street though. They did make some extension offers to Mookie and the last one was very legit as an opening offer.

There's no indication that being a Red Sox lifer meant a thing to Mookie. He wants the max payday from whoever is willing to pay it.

Exactly this. Some seem to have more loyalty towards Betts than the team itself. Mookie doesn't feel the same way. He's taking the biggest offer next year, whoever gives it.

The Sox should pay it.

Love to root for a jersey rather than the human being in the jersey!

We root for the jerseys, and the players root for their contracts.

Yes, but I would imagine JH would realize the implications of those contracts and how it affects the luxury tax. Ultimately, it's his call because he's the boss.

But was he overlording DD the entire time or just rubber stamping an approval for an employee he trusted at the time?

We're $21M under. Castillo's AVV is $10.3M.

It depends on how much we might want to add.

We could also wait until mid season to decide. We'd know, if we want to add other salaries by then, and Castillo's money would be lessened by prorating.

Is there a difference?

Being a rubber stamp is giving your approval to the move without thinking about it. That doesn't remove your responsibility. Arguably, that could be worse than lording over.

They both are to blame, but DD is the one who presented the idea to Henry.

DD has a history of leaving franchises in poor financial condition upon being shown the door.
