I'm sure the guy that replaces Leon will thrill everyone with his offense too.

All the new catcher has to do is drop a three or four f-bombs and he'll be more offensive than Sandy Leon...

The guy Leon replaces in Cleveland was a better hitter and a good defender. I guess other teams also value great defense from the catching position- not just the Sox.

Leon was a plus on this team despite his sub .600 OPS.

Just Sale's numbers with him vs Vaz were enough to make him a plus.

Career with Sale:

2.51 w AJ P (226 innings)

2.79 w Leon (436 innings)

3.02 w Flowers (97)

3.36 w Phegley (88)

3.53 w Avila (112)

4.61 w Vaz (84)

Also, with Price...

2.67 Avila (111)

2.85 Molina (473)

2.96 Leon (204)

3.06 Jaso (191)

3.09 Navarro (128)

3.61 Shoppach (162)

4.27 Vaz (360)

Bloom has the same thumb up his ass approach to off seasons that Ben had.

I can't claim to know where any of this is going, but I'll wait to see where things land by spring training. Ownership set him up for a near-impossible task before he was even hired, and he walked in to a fan base expecting him to work miracles from day one.

By this date five years ago Ben Cherington had signed Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval.

Signed Rusney that year too.

Ben did go a little nuts prior to the 2013 season, signing free agents Mike Napoli, Stephen Drew, Shane Victorino, Koji Uehara, Jonny Gomes and David Ross...

It appears "thumb in ass" = building a ring team

By my count, we are down to 34 players on the 40 man roster:

Assuming Pedey starts on the 60 day IL or maybe 15 day, players in Red might make the opening 26 man roster- assuming no acquisitions (which is impossible.)

C: Vazquez

1B: Dalbec (3B), Travis (LF)

2B: Pedroia (DH), Chavis (1B/3B), Lin (SS/3B/OF)

3B: Devers

SS: Bogaerts, Chatham (2B)

LF: Benintendi

CF: Bradley (traded?), Wilson

RF: Betts

DH: Martinez

SP: Sale, Rodriguez, Price, Eovaldi, D Hernandez, Velazquez, Shawaryn, Hart, Weber, Reyes

RP: Workman, Barnes, Walden, Taylor, Hembree, Brasier, Brewer, Lakins, Poyner, Aybar

Most likely, Chatham, Wilson, Brewer and Velazquez will be replaced by acquired players. Travis, Brasier and Lin could be, too.

I don't see Marcus Wilson having a shot to make this roster. Travis is a post prospect nobody. Neither of those two will be in Boston on opening day.

No chance for Wilson in April. Travis does possess the desirable skill of making minimum wage...

That's a good one.

I agree. My list was based on what we have right now.

We have 6 roster slots open, and maybe more to follow, so obviously quite a few players in red will be gone or in AAA to start 2020.

Probably many long term fans look at the roster in different ways than your slant, but if we wait until the winter meetings are over, some of the question marks may well be answered. My take on the list is that Pedroia is likely a no show for another year. I would think Travis, Lin, Hembree, Velazquez, Brewer and one of Eovaldi or Price will be moved in a larger trade. I would keep Chatham as our next utility player. Can't see how we keep Bradley unless Betts and a starter go.

Do deals till happen at the Winter Meetings? They've been pretty dead the last two offseasons...

I know deals will be made. My list was meant to show where we are right now.

(I doubt Chatham makes the 26 man roster until September.)

IMO, he's up in BOS before AS Break. He has a 50/50 chance to be there on opening day right now.

All great signings, with Good leadership, and Veteran presence. That was vital in winning. Swinging the Bat and Fielding is big, but great chemistry is big too. Wonder what the Total contract cost for that year.

2013 was one of my favorite teams ever. The Mental Toughness on that team, was the best I have ever seen. Nothing fazed them. Grind like Mothers.

The chances went up when Marco was non tendered, but I think we'll sign or trade for a utility infielder, and Dalbec will make the roster.

Chavis will.

If it's between Lin and Chatham, Lin is out of options.

Many of those players were great "clubhouse guys." (The list neglected including Dempster.)

Contract costs:

$13.25M x 2 Dempster (He retired after 1 year.)

$13M x 3 Victorino (He declined sharply after 1 year.)

$9.5M x 1 Stephen Drew (The following year re-signing was a circus.)

$5M x 2 Jonny Gomes (Second year, he was traded.)

$5M + incentives Mike Napoli (Re-signing didn't work out as well.)

$3.1M x 2 David Ross

Not counting Uehara, the total was $49M.

(Uehara was an arb player in 2013- $4.25M.)

I like Yolmer Sanchez, who isn't a terrible bat for a second baseman; two season ago he led the AL with 10 triples and had 52 extra-base hits, about what Pedroia averaged in the four years before Manny was being Machado. Problem is Yolmer will make around 5 mil...

As of right now, is Lin the starting 2b? IMO he is their best internal option, assuming Pedroia is a no-go...
