A “loose body”... that doesn’t sound good.

Eovaldi to injured list with right elbow issue

The Red Sox placed Nathan Eovaldi on the 10-day injured list with what they termed a loose body in his right elbow. Boston summoned left-hander Bobby Poyner from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill his roster spot.

Eovaldi, who was instrumental in the Red Sox's march to the World Series championship last season, was re-signed this winter to a four-year deal. Eovaldi has a 0-0 record and a 6.00 ERA in four starts this season.

Eovaldi has had Tommy John surgery twice -- once in high school, and in 2016 while pitching for the Yankees.

Loose bodies aren’t all that problematic long term, but they need to be retrieved. Opening the elbow, recovery, build up, etc is probably going to cost him 3 months. Wouldn’t be surprised if Eovaldi comes back in relief after 10 weeks or so without the buildup. I guess it depends on what is needed at the time

Well, that's not good.

Nathan Eovaldi after four starts this year and Drew Pomeranz after four starts last year:

NE 21.0 IP, 6.00 ERA, 16 K, 11 BB, .266 BAA

DP 20.2 IP, 5.23 ERA, 20 K, 8 BB, .288 BAA

Pomeranz made eight starts in 2018 before landing on the disabled list with a 6.81 ERA.

This injury to a rotation thas is questionable right now doesn't help. Sale still trying to get back on track.

Gio just opted out from the Yankees. Might look into it.

Eovaldi is going to find himself in the bullpen when he comes back. That solves that bullpen problem.

Screw the luxury tax and sign Keuchel immediately. That fixes the rotation problem.

Eovaldi had the same surgery last year on March 30.

He was activated from the DL on May 30.

This post deserves an eye roll.

So two months out of the rotation and possibly time to reestablish his mound presence. Big hit but this kind of thing happens. I presume these loose bodies (bone chips) were there earlier but we waited until now to try to deal with them. Why?

I have no idea how long they've been there.

It seems like this is something that occurs suddenly, so they haven't been there for any length of time.

Dr. Jacko has the correct answer on this I think.

Let's hope it's not too lengthy an absence . Eovaldi was , and still is , a risky signing . It was based on the relatively small sample size of his post season heroics and certainly not on his career track record of performance and of health .

Who's replacing him in the starting rotation? Velazquez? Wish Wright were still around.
I wojuld like to see Darwinzon Hernandez. He was very impressive in Fort Myers.

Yep....he may surprise you, why not?

Eo may be a great reliever. He also may be on the DL all season. Who the heck knows. He is the definition of injury prone

Hes already proven to be a great reliever, after his ballzy performance last postseason. Hes not a SP.

Logic fail.

His best and ballziest relief performance in the postseason by far was the 6 innings in WS Game 3.

He wouldn't have been able to do that if he wasn't a STARTER.

Sounds like he’s going the non surgical route here. Sometimes these loose bodies settle down and get pinned in the joint. Other times they don’t. My bet is he’s headed for surgery at the end of the year and Eo is hoping he can avoid the knife during the year

And don't forget his strong starting performances in the ALDS and ALCS.

I never wanted Eovaldi back at that price and duration because of his injury history.

But I give him credit for being the only starting pitcher in MLB capable of throwing that hard for that many pitches in s single game. Kind of freakish. Especially since he isn’t all that physically imposing.

Of course maybe a lot of his problems are caused by throwing do insanely hard on every pitch...

He throws a very low percentage of fastballs— one of the lowest in baseball.

The game I went to he gave up a couple ER in like 2 innings. I'm much more hesitant

I don't know why. When you have gas like that, I would use it. Considering it's also the best pitch for your arm, I don't know why he wouldn't

I am well aware of that. Simply speaking, he doesn't pass my eye test

Eye test? That's an awful way for an educated young man to talk.
